The way I've seen it done before: You ride (say) the yellow route normally, but you're thinking of moving up to (say) the reds. 50/50 will be a section where yellow who have signed on for the 50/50 route will ride the reds in that section. The idea is to give you a taste of the next route up without you being committed fo the whole trial. Having said that, I may be completely wrong!
