just been looking at am 06 rev 3 250 there seems to be quite a bit of wear on the fork stanchions, the black coating of the fork legs has been warn away up to about 3 inches from the seals (when the forks are at rest) is this likely to cause problems? the stanchions feel smooth and i couldn't seen any large scartches or anything just the caoting having been rubbed off

coming from a mountain bike back ground f this sort of wear was evident on a set of forks it would mean they'd most likey need new stanchions pretty soon as they'd start to leak, is tgis the case with the forks on the beta? or am i worrying about nothing?

I have a 06 beta and have owned it from new, I have recentally noticed one leg is showing signs of the blackcoating wearing off, my bike has not had a hard life and I have never changed the fork seals ,I would not consider this a problem,will be interested what others have to say.

the coating on the outside of the forks is an 'anti friction coating'? i dont think it will be very thick, and all forks wear anyway. the only reason you have seen it is because its worn through. if you contact KAIS in the back of TMX i think they will be able to reinstate the finish. if you go to the trouble of doing that you may as well replace the seals and the friction bushes as well.

as long as the fork action is still good, and the oil is changed frequently, and not leaking ,i wouldnt bother.

This is a nitride coating which is there to reduce friction and mainly to look good this will wear off

when used, they all do this mine is the same,this is not a problem as the hard

chrome which is underneath is all that matters !

if they were nitride coating they would would never wear due to the fact is that nitride is a very hard coat

the forks dont seem to be leaking and feel fine when working ( no stichion or play and they fell quite plush and the damping seems good too so i guess nothing to worry about, could be an expensive weekend then! lol

Just as a matter of course it's good to loosen all the bolts in the front end from time to time to make sure nothing is torqued in such a way that it is applying side pressure to the forks. Wear on the friction coating is to be expected. Rub anything long enough and it will start to show signs of wear. Er, sounds a bit dirty that.

One thing you might want to check is that the wear is even all around the tube. One of the theories for the fork seal issues on early 90s trials bikes was the thinner/lighter fork tubes were flexing more and causing uneven wear around the seals. It is unlikely you have flex in the front end of an '06 that would cause uneven wear but a slightly tweaked front end could show up as uneven wear.
