Can anyone please tell me the correct amount of oil & grade required for the forks on a Yamaha TY250 twinshock. These are the straight leg forks with 34mm diameter stanchions.

Which TY250 twinshock forks are they? The location of the drain holes differentiates A model sliders from later models and I think there was also another internal change between B model and C/D models.

Personally I use 150cc of a 10 grade oil in each leg and this works well for me at 200lbs.

The drain plugs are situated on the outside of each fork leg, above & behind the line of the wheel spindle.

The Forks on the 74 A model have the drain plugs on the outside of the leg and when you drain them the oil will shoot out at 90 degrees to the wheel missing the drain pan by about 2-3 feet. The later models other than the A have the drain plug at the rear of the leg and when you drain the oil by compressing the leg the oil should shoot out all over your shoe or trouser leg!

I still use 150cc per leg on both sets.

I'm with tony283 on this - you really should set up your fork oil height to suit your weight and riding style, rather than the manufacturers specified volume.

To ensure the forks behave consistently from one oil change to the next, I only ever use the measured height method. In the case of both types of TY250 twinshock forks and my weight and riding style, I set the oil height to 125mm from the top when fully compressed.

I'm not recommending you use the following figures, but here are the Yamaha numbers you asked for:

TY250A (holes at side) 175cc of SAE 10W30 Motor Oil SE

TY250B,C,D (holes at rear) 162cc (5.5 oz) 10, 20 or 30 wt Fork Oil

Thank you for the info, it must be the TY250A model because the oil would shoot out to the side if the plugs were removed. I understand what you mean about the individual setup though and will use the quantities suggested as a guide.

Have you ever used ATF? The 10/30 just seemed to stiff and I couldn't easily find straight 10 weight oil. My understanding is that ATF is just about 10 weight. Oh, I also use it in all of my primary's.

Alan yes I have tried ATF in TY250 twinshock forks and while it functions well (good lubrication and doesn't foam), I find the damping is too light for my weight and riding style. I use either 15 or 20 wt fork oil in TY250 twinshock forks, depending on what bike they are on. I would have put ATF somewhere between 5 wt and 10 wt as far as damping goes.
