My sherco 2.9 03 tank won't sit flush and i can't see why anybody else had this problem and what was causing it.

If it's hard to get in & out as well then it's caused by the alcohol in the fuel making the tank expand. Seems to be happening to a lot of bikes now, just something you have to live with

I've just had the same problem. The tank was sitting nice and flush, I took it off for about a fortnight, went to put it back on the bike and it seemed as though the wiring was stopping it.

I moved all of the wires, took the electrics out and it still wouldn't fit.

I left the top tank bolt (electric box holder special bolt)loose, I then put the actual tank bolt into that one and tightened it from there. As I tightened the top bolt it nipped up the bottom one and seems to have solved it as it slowly pulled it back to shape without too much stress on the plastics, I even ordered another one of the special bolts as I thought I had bent the original.

I've now learnt my lesson to leave the tank on the bike and fairly empty when not in use.

I bought a used 2004 290 with that problem. The tank had grown lengthwise and the rear part of the tank had moved back on the mount so much that the screw would barely go into the mount. The tank no longer rested on the frame along each side of the tank and the bottom of the tank had become very soft and flexible. My 2009 started to develop the same problem after only a few months. The problem I have is that all the local stations have 10% ethanol mixed in the fuel.

I had to buy a new tank for the 2004, and on the 2009 I drained the fuel out and let the tank sit in a very warm sunny spot for a few weeks and it returned to the normal size.

Since then I have been able to find a fuel distributor that sells gasoline to farmers for off road use and they don't add ethanol to this fuel, and I have not had any problem since making the switch.
