Scott Trial

The entry list looks full of quality this year and I thought that maybe we should try and come up with potential winners for the trial, or maybe even a top three. It is a unique combination of speed, fitness and consistency between the sticks that will win it, but who has the best overall package?

To help get started a few questions:

What is the lowest riding number to win the Scott?

Has a non-uk rider ever won?

How will David Knight get on, bearing in mind his trials pedigree prior to getting quite good at Enduros?

How much is local knowledge really an advantage?

Too early to predict my top three but I'm sure there are more questions that will help us work it out.

What is the lowest riding number to win the Scott?

Riding numbers have only been seeded in recent times (see the regs for details)

so it used to possible for the potential winner to draw #1. Seeding is done in an attempt to keep the first man on the course & the last man as close together as possible. In recent times only 20 or so people can go round within an hour of the man setting Standard Time.

Has a non-uk rider ever won?

No

Previous Scott experience & knowing where you are count a lot. It would be extremely difficult for any top class first timer to get in the first 6 never mind win it. For someone who hasn't previously ridden it would be very difficult to gauge how fast to go.

How long (time on the bike) is that hells gate thingy and that other enduro that ends in the dark up some big hill in France??

Even if Knighter was to manage a good time what would be the differential in marks between him and say Jarvis Connor and the like. The value of local knowledge (see riders like Phillip Alderson) cannot be underestimaed

Hey its cold enough WATCHING the bloody scott let alone get pish wet through and been ridden over by decent riders and used as traction. Just ask TC's finest.Every year i see him he is freezing his lense off and he is from the cold lands!! :P

I know, the shortcut stuff is just rumours

on about first time winners.the biggest impact i have ever seen since i have been watching and riding in the scott was by robert crawford on a beta zero i think in 1990?.it was a hard wet scott and robert won purly because that is what he had told his brain to do.he had some big crashes, punctures, chain of,when he finished the poor kid had tears in his eyes and i remember thinking at the finish that he had given the trial 110%.his bike was a bit of a wreck too.at the awards do at night it was a speacail night because as the results worked down and the top riders got fewer you could sense that their had been an upset, yes robert had won,not a first timer but a very good second timer.does any body know if any body has won first time out up their.if you have not seen the scott or been to the awards do get your self up thier,it realy is a speacial day wether you are riding or watching, roll on 22 october, mega!!.

Seen as though i love the Scott, i'll put my two penneth worth in.

For the win, i'd back Jarvis, however Colley could upset things, as he is really quick over the moors. and should do as well on observation. I also think James Dabill could upset the runnings, he proved last year he has the speed, and his riding has come on this year, so with the right head on come race day, he could and should be well up there.

For standard time - this is the hard one, this year see's a number of quick riders, Jarvis, Colley, Clarky, Dabill, Austermuhle, B Hemmingway, throw in the likes of David Knight, Paul Bolton, Wayne Braybrook and Crippsy, also not forgetting Sunt, who is desperate to set standard time. This is sure to be one of the fastest Scotts on record.

What does any body else think?

dont forget, when the flag drops the bulls**t stops.

The whole 'shortcuts' thing always seems part of the Scott, but if it really has been stamped out at least it makes things a bit more equal.

I think BoydW has a pretty good view of things. I remember a couple of years ago when Juan Knight rode for the first time, I think the year he was British Enduro Champion he found it hard going and finished in the top 10 - 15. Can't remember exactly.

Is four stroke power the tool to have?

Do you need to set up the bike any differently than normal to cope with the going??

I think David Knight could still set fastest time, he is just that step above when it comes to the fast stuff. His observation score will be the deciding factor so I don't think he will win.

Interesting tip from BoydW though is Colley. He spends a bit more time these days out on his Enduro bike so and there is no doubting him between the sticks.

What ever happened to Rob Crawford??? Don't see his name anywhere these days.

He'll not see which way Grimbo goes, I cannot see a first timer going quickest in the Scott. After all you wouldn't expect a road racer to go to Donnington & set fastest lap on his first time round would you?

Have you ever been to the Scott Cubby? Even if you've watched it it's an completely different experience riding.
