In a couple of weeks I'll hopefully start putting my TY back together (slowly); the wheels need some TLC anyway, so I'm wondering if it's worth saving up and going to alloy rims if I'm having them rebuilt anyway (?)

Also, are there any particular brand ones that need to be avoided?

I'd like to shave a little off it's stock 84Kg weight, and figured the unsprung stuff might be the best area to start in

Going to?  It should have them as original equipment.  The DIDs of the day were known to corrode internally in some cases but a new rim of any make should not have that problem.

Yeah the TY should already have Alloy rims

I think the only one that my have had steel rims was the TY50

The two TY 250,s I rode during the seventies both had DID alloy rims which were anodised. If your rims are structually sound I would  have them stripped and re anodised to look correct.  The rims on Bultaco were Akront which even now can be re-finshed to an acceptable standard

Ah ok, I shouldn't have assumed then, lol

 

Oh well, that means more money for other bits like alloy spacers, axles, etc
