Yes, Richie Sunter did ride a works supported Kawasaki, in 1974/5 from memory, as did Nigel Birkett, in an arrangement through Don Smith with the importers. I think Alec Wright was involved. Kawasaki slashed their trials budget shortly after, meaning both riders were dropped, though both moved to bikes which one would think they regarded as more competitive at the level they were riding (Montesa in Sunter's case and Ossa in Birkett's).

Interestingly, Kawasaki then adopted a policy which in their words made every private owner a works rider, undertaking to pay a cash sum to any KT250 rider making the major awards in national or, I think, centre trials. Such was the relative competitiveness of the bike, I don't think they had to pay anyone!

You are right about the payment for results. I don't know about Nationals but Centre Trials were £10 for a win and £5 for Novice award. Ian Haydon was quite successful in the South West Centre on a Torbay Motorcycles Kawasaki KT 250 around 75,76

  2. Are the lights on all the time ( no on/off switch,  just dip) If so it sounds like the feed wire to the dip switch has a bad connection or the wire is broken.

For the MOT if push comes to shove you can cover all the lights up and get a day time MOT.

  3. If it has the original wipac round coil in the stator plate, remove the HT lead but leave the low tension side connected to the points. Run a wire from the points to a Japanese 6v ac coil, put that under the tank.  Fully advance the stator plate, set the points gap at 10 thou and bend the points spring a bit to give it more tension. Fit a new condenser.   I used a 6v dc coil and battery  on  the  D7 Bantam I had. It was a lot better with that set up.

  4. Up to the early 60s. Was called marks gained rather than marks lost.

To the best of my knowledge that method of marking was used in Ireland.

Early post war marking was 3 for footing ( dab or paddle ) and 5 for a stop. 1 mark for a dab came in in the mid fifties and remained as 1, 3, 5 until early 70's,  73 ish when the 2 for two dabs came in.

Didn't make much difference to me when I started riding in Schoolboy events in 72 on a £15 D1 plunger Bantam as best I could hope for was a 3

  5. Hi Deryk,

Do you know what top-end that is grafted onto the Bantam engine?

That looks very much like a 170 Minarelli top end, as used by Cotton and DOT.

The other Brian Trott Bantam ( post 17) has a Fantic top end. A BSA Fantam if you like :)

  6. Just wanted to say Hi, I have just bought this 2005 SY175f 143cc I am really pleased with it, but I have no idea of it's history and therefore do not know if its had any of the common modifications done, I am keen to get the bike as good as it can be and would be grateful to hear of your good and bad expierences, what works, what doesn't work, what to look out for, which mods are worth the money etc..

Thats a nice looking Scorpa you have there. One mod worth doing is replacing the alloy chain tensioner for a steel one. Birketts do them, they are on the expensive side http://birkettmotosportukltd.co.uk/?Stop_Press_New_Product. The alloy one on my 125 bent first time out
