  1. Been looking at this photo and wondering how he held it. I would expect to come out of that skip on the back wheel these days (if not on my ar5e).

He looks like he's already dropped the front wheel below the level of the skip? And he looks like his weight's further forward than you'd expect.

Might be one of those spot the ball type photo's where you'd never imagine they were in that position at any time to get to where they were going.

Anyone explain? Looks like he would go over the bars from that position?

A lot did go over the bars, but not Scarlett, landed it both wheels together.

  2. I have found the local DVLA (Brighton) really helpful, I gave then the frame and engine numbers, they comfirmed they had a number and told me what form to fill in, got the reg doc's back in a couple of weeks. If they have not been registered you need a confirmation of age which Roy Bacon can do 01983 730635. Also check out DVLA website, some of the forms can be downloaded, phoning Swansea is a nighmare tho'.

  3. Found a few more negs of the Ascot event, took mono during practice and colour during event, cant find the colour yet!. During practice it was found that most sections were pretty much impossible so were eased for the event itself!

First 2 are John Lampkin, Fantic 300.

  4. Thanks for the help guys, yes first thing I have done is fit a PVL from Sammy Miller, straight bolt on, although as ever the instructions were pretty obscure, new Mk1 Concentric going on this weekend and a flush of the oil system and we will see how it runs. I suspected a helicoil was needed, what is strange tho' is that the Champion that came with it fits fine! I will be competing on it so some bouncy rear suspension will be next, but I think this will also need a cub rear subframe as the seat height will be beyond my little legs.

  5. This is probably a really dumb question but I am new to Pre65's (Last brit bike I owned was in 1980) How do the imperial chain sizes compare to metric?, by BSA chain looks to be about 428, does that seem right?.

Also I have put an NGK plug in (equivalent to a champion N3) but it seems very loose in the threads antil the last turn, any ideas?.

    Ta in advance.

  6. I have taken the plunge and bought a genuine 1960 Bsa C15t with a bit of history, actually owned by Vic Eastwood ( genuinely, name and address in the buff log book etc ) It is very original (painfully so, steel tank, exhaust outside the frame, 20in fron wheel, original footrests etc) Mechanically very together, just needs a tidy cosmetically and a few sympathertic mods for current use, ( probably just a cub subframe, longer rear shocks, exhaust routed tighter, and a 21in front rim ) The engine seems to have been all black at some time and has the name Ron etched in to the front cases, does this mean any thing to any one?? This will probably end up a lot less competitive than the kind of bike I was intending to build but at least it won't fall foul of any eligability issues!!

  7. The TL is looking good, I get most of my service bits from David Silver, all my TL's ignition system is XL K3 but I have read that the XL Motosport advance/retard works best, from a period article, so I may try that.

Will be interested to hear how the pipe works, I was thinking of adapting a WES to replace the very heavy original.

  8. Hi John

Yes it is alloy, the crafsmanship really is superb, it looks like the cap was machined from solid and the threads on it and the tank are amazing, even the seat bit is alloy, I'm pretty certain it was made for a TL as it has cut outs and indentations exactly where needed and the TL is pretty unusual under the tank!!

But I do agree, looks to be a bit of Cagiva DNA there.

  9. I have just bought this tank/seat, looks unused, but have no idea who built it or why, it looks like it was made for the TL250 which is pretty unusual for a start. Any one got any ideas of the tanks history????????

  10. I agree with Woody, certain changes on twinshocks no problem, especially shocks etc, that is one of the reasons this era of bike is so much fun.

Back to pre 65 it seems that you can spend lots of money disguising modern forks in old externals but not spend a few quid down the breakers sticking the forks straight on. So brand new alloy Falcons are OK on the back but 15 year old Marzochi's on the front are not.

With carbs I sort of accept no Mikuni's but surely in that case even the Amal concentric is too new.

I just want to build a decent, reasonably competitive bike that won't get me hassle at events.

I didn't realise that would be so difficult!!!

  11. Thanks Guys, I guess if it looks standardish it should be OK.

Twinshocks are a bit more clear cut in the ACU rulebook, they must have been manufactured with twin shocks, so the converted Fantics and Yams should not be allowed, also check out this Honda, should also not be eligable.

  12. Hi All

I need some help, I want to compete in pre 65 probably with a Cub or C15. Is there a set of rules as to what can and cannot be modified, for example to be eligable for the Scottish and the Talmag.

I won't be getting an Otter or anything like that but I do like modding my bikes. Seeing bike's like Mick Grants of which very little seems to originate from before 1965 lets me think any thing goes, then I hear about no electronic ignition, no concentric carbs, no oil in the frame etc etc.

    I am confused!!!!

P.S I'm not critisising bikes like Micks, I think they are wonderful and would build one tommorow if I had the ability.
