  1. I had trouble starting mine when I first got it. A friend recommended using the ball of my foot, rather than middle, and that does seem to add some leverage and speed to the kick. I'm not really sure if that made the difference, or if I just got the hang of it, but I don't have any trouble starting it now, hot or cold.

  2. yeah not sure if he dealers doing it or me. i would love to. so yeah ill let you know what i do. are you having the same trouble?

My bottom rod bearing is bad. I figured while I was in there, I would do the main bearings, crank seals, etc. I thought I had a local shop lined up to do it, but now I can't get a hold of him. Southwest Montesa has (had?) all the parts that I need, but they need a measurement off the rod to know which one to provide. I'm really tempted to try splitting the bottom end myself, but haven't worked up the nerve yet!

  3. I used one for a 1978 VW 1.6L. That was a completely arbitrary year and model, but the physical size was about right, it had a mounting tab and wire, and the local NAPA had one in stock. I made a small bracket to bolt on the coil mount. It worked great, no more fouled points.

  4. Yep, drained from the bottom, and filled through the small cover on the side of the engine. The manual calls for 1 quart of 80W gearbox oil, or 30W motor oil. It doesn't say whether that's a US quart (946cc), or UK quart (1136cc)! I've always used a US quart, and that works fine.

  5. The only issue that I had with mine, was fouling plugs when it was new; fouled 2 plugs in the 1st 6 months. My dealer told me NOT to touch the throttle for the first minute or two when it was cold, not even a single blip of the throttle, and that solved the problem, the plugs lasted forever.

I went the other way, went from the 4RT to a GasGas 300. Love them both!

  6. I coated my Scorpa tank with Caswell. I was freakishly careful to follow the directions. I cleaned more than twice as much as recommended to be sure that the surface was good. ~1 month in, I have blistering in the coating inside the tank. I'm working with Caswell now to find a solution. I'm not ready to bash or give a recommendation at this point - just wanted to throw out where I stand now. I'll update when I know more. I can say that the customer service has been good so far.

The tank at 5 weeks - notice the small bubbles forming:

Hey Motojunky, old thread, but any updates on your tank? Did Caswell offer any advice or assistance to get you sorted out?

  7. Thanks PSchrauber, I appreciate the info!

You're right 1.2L does sound like a lot, I was expecting about half that. Great tip with the oil level screw, I hadn't noticed that. :)

I think I'll split the difference with the forks, and start at 200cc. I'll see how that works, and go from there.

    Thanks again!

  8. Hi All,

I just bought a 1982 TL320, and would like to change the fluids. I searched the web, but wasn't able to find the info. So the question is, how much oil for the gearbox; and how much oil for the Betor forks?

    Thanks.

  9. We charge $25.00 for MTR / ITSA club members and $35.00 for non-members per event.

What's that in real money ?

If there is such a thing anymore !

    At current exchange rate:

    $25 US = 16.31 GBP

    $35 US = 22.83 GBP

Curious; how much is a typical entry fee for a local trials in Europe?
