  1. Sorry, can't help re TXT or Pro, though both my Pro's have had 'Pro' stickers on them - have you looked at the GG factory website, it's got an archive section (haha) for older models.. Was just wondering why you need the bike, I would have thought the John Deere would perform just fine. Bit of a bugger to get it on the car rack though...

  2. Big thanks to everyone who replied - gotta love forums / YouTube!

     

    In a combination of advice I canted the bars to get the m/cyl as high as possible, slacked off the lever and left overnight. Presto, some pressure back in the morning. Next I did indeed wedge/ clamp three pistons in place forcing the fourth sticky one to move. Reassambled and re-bled normally.

     

    Now all I have to do is wear the spilt brake fluid off the pads and disc....

  3. Hi. Just fitted new front pads to my Gas Gas 300. I had to push the (four) pistons as far back as they would go to get the new pads over the disc. But on re-assembly, the brake was spongy, so I bled it. Still spongy. So I bled it again using gravity to get the fluid through, and no, I didn't let the master cylinder empty... trouble is, I now have no brake pressure whatsoever and no amount of bleeding is bringing it back.

     

    Where should I go from here, please?

    Just acquired a clean '05 250 Pro, it's lovely but the clutch rattles in neutral. Oil level seemed a little low but topping up has made no difference. Gear change is a tad notchy, but I expect that. No slip or drag on the clutch at all, it works perfectly.

    I just thought I would ask if anyone has any ideas before I take the cover off.

    Whilst writing, who likes which oil, and how much of it?

    Stop me if I am out of date with the news, but having owned a 4RT and GG 2T side by side, what the world really needs is a Honda EFI 2T, in my opinion!

    Looks like I got caught out, my Montesa 4RT could be an '05 when it was sold as an '07, people are telling me the 10th digit on the frame no equals the year.

    Got an '05 TXT Pro as well (and prefer it!). Anyone know how to identify my TXT Pro from the frame number? All the grahics are right, but I'm getting paranoid now.

    Hanging is too good for some people, but I suppose it's 'buyer beware' and all that.

  7. Sorry, I am not an expert but personally I would take the cover off and take a look at the clutch itself. I am assuming the cable is in good condition. On the age of the bike, the edges of the clutch plates / clutch basket could be burred (have worn to create interference) or it could even be as simple as needing to change the oil; I once (years ago) had a 'crosser where the clutch performance was affected by it having too much oil in the crankcase. Sometimes just taking the clutch apart and putting it back together again cures this kind of problem.

    As I said, I am no expert. Hope you get it sorted, best wishes.

  8. Thanks for your reply, I do agree with you; my bike came with altered gearing but I changed the sprockets back to standard as it just didn't suit me. This bike was advertised as having a Mitani clutch, but it is still grabby. I agree with your theory on leaving the clutch alone and riding it like a tractor which works and is pleasingly different from a 2T - my problems nearly always arose when I started going off-line and needed to dip the clutch while I changed direction.

    You have reminded me of something - the first two weeks I had this bike (in dry weather) I was complaining I was disappointed beacuse it was too easy to ride and there was no input from me!

    Good luck with finding one - I cruised E-bay for a couple of months and I have this theory that trials bikes command higher prices in November and March/April. Come May this year, had I waited I could definately have saved myself the better part of a thousand pounds provided I was prepared to travel a few miles, so be patient! I am no tech expert so though I have the programmable throttle, I will never alter it; I went for it simply to preserve the re-sale potential, but if you are on a bit more of a tight leash with the Missus I reckon a clubman should be perfectly ok with the standard bike.

  9. Hm. I've just left my 4RT behind in France, otherwise I might well have offered it to you!

    I have had a real privilige this year; not only did my in-laws buy a holiday home with 4 acres of limestone/ oak tree hillside that they don't use for anything, but by coincidence when I advertised my Yamaha R1 for sale, I ended up part-exing it for an 07 Repsol 4RT and thus had it to ride every day this summer alongside my existing year 2000 model Beta REV 3. Not many people have that kind of luck, I reckon!

    The comparison is interesting and as a result I have bought the Beta back home to trial in the greybeards class this winter. Why?

    The 4RT was a novel and delightful experience and the suspension the best I have ever experienced by far. It took a few goes to remember to keep my weight a tad further forward to stop it snow-ploughing in tight turns but it was fantastic to just feed in the power and roll over just about anything like a two wheel tractor. The bike went through each section easily and didn't care a jot if I was still on it or not.....

    I was surprised to find the engine braking nowhere near as pronounced as I expected, and also to discover that the two-stroke 250 feels a good bit more powerful.

    However, after a long riding session I am finding the clutch a little bit on-off and tiring to slip continually, but I think the least attractive feature of the bike is the tendency to wheel-spin as you release the clutch; in practice this makes starting off on a wet incline considerably more difficult than on a two stroke, which, given our weather here in the UK is why I left it in sunny France.

    You are absolutely right about Honda, they are superb, I have had several CBR road bikes and the build quality knocks spots off all the other Japanese road bikes.

    I have only just signed up to this site; I will be looking at the forums to figure the best optons for my 4RT clutch problem, but please reply if you have some ideas.

    Thanks for listening, nobody else in my family appreciates bikes and I have had nobody to talk to all summer - small pice to pay though!!

  10. Hi.

    Got myself a 2000 model REV 3 250 with USD forks but fork seal has obviously been leaking. Anyone got the dat on fork oil quantity please?

    I'm using a fuel mix of 70:1 but it smokes a bit and drips unused oil from the low end of the silencer when put back in the garage. Anyone know the recommended fuel mix please?

    Looking forward to my first greybeards round at Waltham Chase Club next week, first time back for 15 years.
