  1. Hi all

Does anyone have the correct amount of oil required for the clutch/gearbox for the TLM260r as told it was 600mils but when i drained it 900 mil + came out as this is about the last job to do before its ready to fire up after refurbish and photo's will follow soon.

    Thanks Mike

  2. So again, where are the special parts available?

Thats the million dollar question, would be helpfull if we made a list of places that still have spares

My bike had a new honda piston fitted and has not done much work since so not sure how long they last

There are a few web sites in Japan that have spares but i am not sure how you go about buying them, think you have to use a 2nd party from Japan to do the buying for you

Hope to have the shelter fitted and forks back in tomorrow but still waiting for the wheel bearings to arrive in the post before i can get the wheels back in

  3. hi,

there are 2 carbs with the bike, the standard one and a PWK...

I know of only 1 more bike with the large middle box like mine, it is the narita special.

    eik3ld.jpg

this box requires a lot of work to fit it on the bike (shapening cilynder and head, shelter, a.s.o.). my engine revs much faster and easier, they told me the crank is also modified..

nevertheless, if there are after market kits, pls tell me...

    cheers

Does the bike run hot as it looks like you have you got a extra vent on the side of your air box and have you got any heat shield between the middle box and carb to stop heat transfer

Just picked up some exhaust bandage to put a couple of raps on the inside of my middle box as temps are sometimes quite high at timesand might trim the new shelter to allow more air flow

  4. Yes I would agree, it is hard to compare a RTL250 with a TLM260. They are a more modern bike, although there are similarities in chassis components.

The standard engine is wonderful, sounds a bit like a TYZ, smooth and soft but then has huge mid range power similar to a modern 290 Beta I tried. I am not sure why you would want to modify the exhaust system?

Can anybody tell me what the effect of the aftermarket big bore system/bigger carb etc had on performance over standard?

Who marketed these components, I have seen stickers from Mitani and Ethos ?

    NAT

its to give more power at low revs and allow the bike to rev out more than the standard bike as per the factory bikes but causes a lot of heat thats why the cdi is moved forward to keep cool and extra vents cut into the tank shelter and a flatside carb to help smooth running as what is fitted to most modern trials bikes now

  5. That one is very nice 4 stroke! I'm noticing bits on yours that are similar to the Narita special that i've seen in a mag. Not saying the same one but someone had done some work. Aluminum mid muffler, bigger head pipe, shelter/seat venting, same type muffler, CDI box moved to front downtube( which I noticed on Billy T's Pentax). Does it have a flatside carb?

4 stroke somehow it changed its self into a 2 banger from the TLR250 i ride, will be nice to see the difference between the 2 when i get it finished as i ride the TLR better than i used to ride the Beta rev3 250 so can not wait to get this 2 banger up and running

The bike was imported from Japan 15 years ago and used for 2 years and put in the shed for 13 years before i bought it

Carb is flatside and when i kicked it over started 2 kick after been in transit for 3 weeks to get to me and the motor runs sweet but the plastics are shot and shock rubber was just dust (new rubber and service done now)

Still having problems getting the plastics but the rest is about sorted

  6. As I'm a smoker and have always smoked Rothmans for the last 60 years. (thats not a misprint) I have always had a desire for a "Rothman's". The first was the last of the RTL's although I had a ride on the earlier drum brake version. I was instantly at home on the RTL as everything seemed to be a perfect fit for me. It was incredibly stable, almost felt as though you were on a workshop stand! The power was soft at idle but there when you wanted it. Steering and suspension was very good. I also remember the one I built had a Titanium Carb!! Other memories of both these models was the "odd bits" that seemed to be put on as after thoughts, gas bottle, coil, and velcroed CDI ??

The 260TLM was often seen in Pentax colors and some like the one I acquired were Canadian imports and were very plain. The 260 motor was perhaps as powerful as a Jumbo and it also had a sloping bash plate that you would have real trouble getting stuck on. Power was very smooth but seemed excessive when you gave it some wellie! Suspension and brakes were very good and it steered well. The frame was weak at the back around the SA and mine arrived broken in 3 places.

Preferences must be down to either being a 2T or 4T man. TLM oodles of instant power, RTL softer and perhaps a more stable riding position.

Off course the "other one" was not designed for trials but would clip 170 mph and was the most user friendly crotch rocket I have ever ridden.

    Tony

    very nice

My TLR250 is in the Rothmans red and the TLM260 will also be Rothmans red to match but if it turns up anywere near as good as these bikes i will be over the moon

just mounted the motor back in the frame and headstock back on and waiting for some parts to arrive to be able to put it back togeather

  7. Just got a TLM260RF a few weeks ago but i have stripped it down to zero and the frame has just come back from the powder coaters so i only had chance for a 20min ride around the garden before the strip down.

so can not give a real verdict yet but it went well, looks good to and will look better when finished.

Can not say how the RTL goes as not yet got one but i have the TLR250 twinshock and thats my baby and main bike for this season but the TLM will get a run out at some time later when finished so i will give a report then

  8. As Woody says

The 'proper' TLM260 with the double disks was an excellent bike, however, not a twinshock, so irrelevant. Honda never made a full size twinshock 2-stroke, only the tiddler.

Thats what i said Mono shock and they were only made for the Japan market so not many ended abroad and mine is a import from Japan 15 years ago and has been in storage for 13 years but its a good bike to look at and ride

Woody has made a good case for must twinshockers so you can pick which will be your bike as we are all individuals and the choice is down to each of us but if you look for a good clean bike that has been looked after you will not go far wrong as all twinshockers will cost money if they have not been looked after as parts are not cheap and soon add up

3k for a standard TLR250 high prices in the UK

  9. Hi Adrian

Lots of clubs around you ,Richmond , Darlington, Weardale, Middlesbrough and most will have some twinshocks at there events

I used to live in Darlo before i moved to Oz and rode at most club events all a good bunch of lads

As for what twinshock to get there are a few depending on what you like at the time and all can do the job as its more down to the rider (ty175,ty250,fantic200,fantic240 ,TLR250, TLR200

My fav is the TLR250 which i got for this season and it just feels right as soon as i rode it so its more about how you feel when you try the bike

Also picked up a TLM260 rf mono shock which is in bits right now but ran well when i rode it and should be back togeather in a month and they were suppost to be a well sorted bike so dont know what cleanorbust is on about

So pick a nice clean bike and enjoy

    Mike

  10. Brakes

As you have said earlyer the secret is buy the HONDA as i can lock my frount and back wheel with its brakes but it will be interesting to see how the Monty brakes match up when i finish rebuilding the 247 cota over christmas

Part of the fun is droping off a bank and guessing if you will stop in time to turn before you hit the tape, unless you ride a honda then you know you will stop

keep up the tinkering as i may need help with the monty brakes :xmas:

  11. Hi all

Looking at putting a few parts on the TLR and wondered if its worth fitting a power bomb frount exhaust pipe, has anybody else fitted one and was there any difference or is there any other mod which i should do first.

    shocks fitted to to rear

    lowered footrests

apart from the 2 mods above the bike is standard

    Thanks Mike

  12. I agree with Andy, certainly looks like a TLR and a 250 too as it's got the BIG fins on the barrel. So....why you worried about the engine number, get out and have some fun on it.

allways wanted the TLR so was a bit worried as to what i had bought but it all seems good as it has the fuel tap as andy says and looks good so as you say time to just ride the bike and have some fun starting tomorrow morning :D

    thanks to all

  13. Can you post a photo? I myself have used xr200 engines in many trials frames creations.

Here are are a couple of pictures of the bike, it looks nothing like the XR200R engine or frame.

  14. Hi all

    Just got a TLR250?

I have checked the bike over and it looks just like a TLR250 but for the engine and frame numbers which i read on a honda site should start ME07-********* but on the bike i have it starts ME04-""""""" on both the frame and engine and i can not find a bike listed which starts with these numbers so if anybody has any idear as to why the numbers are not as listed it would help

    Thanks
