Thanks to Heather for naming my new bike. Alrighty then. First impression from a section scouting ride not much section riding. It feels a lot like my 2013 300 EVO. Clutch is surprisingly progressive with no stick but pull is harder. Not surprising as the stock spacers have yet to be replaced. Handling and suspension seem very close to the ‘13. Tough to tell though as both ends are just starting to loosen up. The new rear master cylinder makes the rear brake a little more sensitive. Front brake is the same. Engine is still breaking in so it feels a little flat on top and bottom. I can feel a real difference not having the carbon reeds as I stalled quite a few times when the going got tricky where the ‘13 with the VForce carbon reeds would have just grunted and pulled me through.
The real shocker is how this bike shifts. The ‘13 has always shifted, well, like a Beta. Notchy, clunky and with a tendancy to drop out of second into neutral if I wasn’t careful to make sure I felt every bit of the shift mechanism clack into place before proceeding. The first crash I had on the ‘13 was from it popping out of second on a climb so it wasn’t just wear. The ‘13 has actually gotten better over time but it’s still clunky. The 2018 snicks into gear like a Japanese street bike. Just a short tap and it’s in a new gear. Downright freaky for a Beta rider.
The ignition coil is on the other side of the bike and the CDI seems very exposed dangling down from the right side of the frame. This makes the choke on the Keihin, once difficult to access, now impossible to access. The fuel shutoff is also now much more difficult to get at. The voltage regulator is mounted behind the headlight and is larger with a heatsink. The new stock footpegs are quite nice. The fuel filler neck has a vent tube along with the vent tube on the new gas cap. Brought to you by the Department of Redundency Department. The suspicion is things are being moved around to make way for a future fuel injection system. The larger regulator would certainly lean that way.
So that’s about it from day 1. Still feels like the bikes I know and love. Now to start fettling to make it my bike.
have you gone for a 300 again? I fancy a new one next year although I like the look of the new ones a lot.
You have the needle jet thingy upside down. Common mistake. It’s held in place by the main jet holder.
cheers mate I was in the shed first thing this morning I looked at the beta spares and seen the order and already had a feeling it was that. started it up at the trial and ran perfect all day.
ill give it a go tomorrow the pilot jet is clear so must be inside the tower where its blown deeper in to the small hole exit. ill keep trying to flush it out before opening it up
would I be right in thinking theres a bit of dirt trapped near the tiny exit hole and be better getting the security torx fitting to clean inside the tower better?
the carb needed cleaning on my evo 300 so I stripped it down and carb cleaner and air lined it all jets etc was clear. put it back together and it will tick over but bogs down or dies when revved.
it will run nere on perfect with the choke on or the air mixture screw all the way in.
ive stripped it back down a few times and cleaned it again but I'm thinking a bit dirt is trapped beneath the pilot jet which I cant seem to get out?
do those security torx screws need to come out or is there a specific way to blow through that circuit?
ive got a trial tomorrow and going to have to borrow my dads carb but want to get this sorted asap.
Just top it up, turn bars to right full lock and pump the lever. If the fluid starts to drop either the hose is damaged or loose or the slave cylinder seals have failed.
Even if the master cylinder is completely empty I thought it would have had a air in by now
my brother has just bought a 16 ice hell. we was swapping the master cyclinder covers over to some nice red csp ones earlier and noticed the clutch master cyclinder was completely empty of fluid.
which seems weird as it worked when I test rode it a few days ago.
I'm presuming it will need bleeding rather than just topping up as its completely empty up top. and how are these bled? there isn't a nipple near the casing where the hose is like on my beta.
I want to fit some boyesen carbon reeds to my 16 evo 300. on motomerlin etc the carbon reeds are listed for only 09-14. are they not available for 15 onwards or do they still fit?
after a trial today I cleaned the bike and noticed a nut on the rear linkage was a bit loose and theres also slight bit of play from somewhere on the linkage.
I'm going to get it apart and regrease tomorrow tightening it back up.
any tips you've found to help with this job to make it easier or things not to do. bikes 2016 but should imagine same applies to all evos.
I installed 0.84 fork spring and 7.8 shock spring. I weigh about 205 lbs + riding gear and it made a huge difference in how well it handles. Front fork seemed a little bit stiff, so I cut down plastic pre-load spacer 9 mm and it turns well.
hi mate, ive done about 10 hours now with the 20% stiffer rear spring and the front with just preload changed. seems to be well balanced and feels good when riding
yes it is mate must be quite a bit smaller. it only fits corner to corner so the other bike would have to be right up to it the way and touching to maybe fit.
First ride on ‘18 fugly

what did you do to the 13 to give it more off the bottom?
