  1. Having also just got a second hand 2005 4rt I have had similar doubts but maybe its just the way they are. I guess as a previous 2 stroke owner I am not used to all the extra mechanical noise associated with a 4rt especially when cold and clearances are larger. Does the map installed on throttle body make a difference to the audible engine noise, ie more or less retarded?

Does anyone have good/bad experience of tappet adjustment. Any tips and does it make a difference?

Mine also make a whine from the primary drive gearing as soon as load is applied (in gear, clutch in or out). I have changed oil to ATF and had cover off and apart from minor play on the centre needle roller all looks fine. How much play is "normal" on clutch basket?

I will change bearing in near future to see if it eliminates this whine. Anybody else got similar noise?

  2. Having had 3 315's over the last 8yrs and now 4rt I would suggest ATF oil first. Since using ATF never had problems with the clutch on any of 315's always had good action and progressive feel. If changing oil to AFT does not work then would suggest something is wrong with plates or actuator.

ATF oil is designed for use in the multiple clutch packs of automatic gear boxes and seems to work well in Montesa clutches.

  3. Suanders and Lejeune's Rothmans Honda's took trials bikes to a different league in terms of presentation and trick bits. Probably same leap as Miller made with GOV 132 only rothmans colours where a little brighter than Barbours I would imagine.

I Remember seeing Saunders ride his up a stream in a dark valley at the World Round at Patley Bridge and the bike gleamed through the dark!!

1993 Contacts 250 also special, remember Saunders again turning up at Colmore with one, chrome frame and deep red plastics with the large Radiator cowls made them look different to anything else.

  4. I like the centrifugal tip, never hear or seen that before but sounds logical.

I guess also prevention is better than cure and have always run a little higher pressure in Scotland, 7psi front 4.5 back. If you are not going to win the event better to have a hassle free trial and with SSDT sections does not seem to be too detrimental. Always leave in the morning with higher pressure to at least get you to first group trouble free. Worth checking pressure on a regular basis as with a change in weather you can see pressure drop 1/2psi. Some people add air after the main groups before going out on the road etc but never had time for that.

  5. Presume you have tried tapping the head of the screw round with a centre punch, might save drilling. If you have to drill the head off, if you take front wheel out the caliper will probably come off the fork leg leaving the stem of the bolt sticking out minus the head which can easily be clamped with mole grips. If using non 315 bolts check length of new bolts carefully as there seems to be very little clearancve behind the caliper and the heads of the bolts that hold on the disc.
