  1. I checked the piston head and cylinder head. Much carbon deposit but not too much. It looks like the air-fuel ratio is not too lean. So there must be some problems with fuel tap, tube or tank. Tomorrow I'll once more check, wash and blow them.
  2. I've once more cleaned and checked the carb and intake parts. Everythink seems to be OK. New spark plug but no effect. I really don't know this time if the air-fuel mixture is too lean or too rich. Because of the intermittent engine noise I think the mixture is too rich. Spark plug was fouled. However exhaust gases are not heavy. Because of the revolution of the engine fluctuates I think the mixture is too lean. However no poor accelaration and lack of power. When I open the starter the engine revolution decreases and the idling gets normal, the engine revolution no more fluctuate. Is this sign about too lean mixture? Perhaps I've to check the ignition too. I really hope that the main bearing seals don't leak! What kind of job it is to mount new seals? I haven't ever dismantled Montesa engine.
  3. I really hope not (even this has occurred to me)! In this case an air-fuel mixture were lean and spark plug should show overheating. However the spark plug don't burn but has carbon fouling which means over-rich air-fuel mixture! When air-fuel mixture is too rich, removal of the air cleaner will improve the condition somewhat. So I at once tried without air filter but without effect. For sure I washed and oiled the air filter so it's OK. Next I'll dissassamble the carb and check all parts once more again. Somewhere there's something wrong!
  4. I just checked it once more but it's in a good shape, no air leak.
  5. I have so short fingers that I have difficulties to reach the standard Amal levers on my Cota 348. Anyone has adjustable clutch and brake levers on twinshock trials bike? Your opinions and experiences? Are those ones too modern on a twinshock trials bike? Surely have to buy or make new cables?
  6. My Montesa Cota 348 (1978) has allways worked fine without any problems until yesterday but now there's something wrong with the intake. The carb is Amal 2627, and I haven't done any changes to the standard jets and settings. The engine works poorly with low rpm's and I can't find good idling with low enough rpm's. I can set the throttle top screw so that the engine revolution at idling is high but can't get my target speed for idling. The engine will stop when I lower the rpm's. Ofcourse I've tried to turn the air screw left and right but without succes. When I turn the throttle grip at no-load operation the engine revolution increases normally but when turning the grip back the engine revolution decreases too slowly. When riding with higher rpm's the engine works normally. I've dissassembled the carb, wash the jets and carb proper in solvent and blowed them out with compressed air. The slide works freely and the jet needle is in it's place. I've washed and oiled the air filter. There's no air leaks in the intake and airbox tubes. The fuel is fresh. Any ideas what to check next?
  7. There's a folding tip lever and footpegs are in their original place. Is the non-folding tip lever better? How about using the kick start lever?
  8. For some reason I'm not able to use the rear brake of my 348 (1978), I think the lever is somehow unsuitable for me. What's wrong with me - or with the lever? Can I get a better one or is the only way to do it myself? Anybody else has the same problem? Or is it just me...

    Front Fork Springs

I mean this: France Trial Classic
  14. The kick start lever of my Montesa Cota 348 is bended out of shape. Can I try to straighten it (without heating) with a hydraulic press or will it shatter?
  15. How long the front fork springs will last? I don't know the correct English word but I mean that how many years they work well before getting worn out, slack? What do you think about the front forks with fork top nuts inc. pressure relief valves? Are they much better than standard front forks?
  16. Thanks TooFastTim and PeterB The original fatbars "Super-Akront Montesa" that I have is only 24 mm. As I know the modern fatbars are 28,6 mm. So the original 348 bar mounts are to small.
  17. Yes, I mean just the muffler (sorry about my poor English). OK, I'll try to bend out the mounting bracket.
  18. I don't like the original Cota 348 exhausts because it touches the muddy rear tire. Has anyone made or bought some smaller and lighter exhaust? If I'll make a new one, what kind of should be the composition of it?
  19. Anyone know where to get fatbar mounts for Cota 348?
  20. I just received from Germany an Ortema P1 Light Back Protection with shoulder straps. It's not poor Chinese but excellent German quality! It's really pitty that Ortema doesn't make Knee Pads. However they make Knee Brace from Carbon-Fibre (individual fitting!), price is 1 889,00 euros! Not for me. P1 is the lightest and most comfortable Back protector for trial I've ever tried. Ortema
  21. Look at Sizes I bought the white logo ones XL from an eBay Shop. They seem to be very comfortable but let's see how durable they are. They are Made in China. Surely the young women in the factory are too busy to sew good quality. And the white logo is too printed with some kind of adhesive paint. Maybe I got "lemons".

    Fatbars?

I need to replace the broken Akront bars on my Montesa Cota 348 and wonder about fatbars. Who's tried fatbars on a twinshock trials bike and what did you think? What bars and bar mounts do you recommend?

    Airbox Rubber

Any ideas where I may find an airbox rubber for Montesa Cota 348? The original one is worn out.
  24. I'm going to fit a Mikuni flatslide carb VM28-418 to my Montesa 348. Any ideas on a firm that supplies 42 - 33 mm sleeve rubbers? The front spigot outer diameter of Mikuni is 33 mm. The outer diameter of Montesa inlet tube is 42 mm. I've checked Allens and Hug's Bultaco. According to their websites they don't have this size.
