  1. Put the bike in gear, bump it backwards until the piston prevents it from rolling (ie compression stroke, below TDC), then kick it. It will kick through much easier and faster. I hated starting mine until learning this trick. Using this method, it almost always starts first kick.

  3. This is how far apart the ability levels are now.

30 years ago a good centre rider could ride a world round

Today many people riding a centre trial couldnt get across those rocks with the engine running.

Got to applaud the skills but the gulf in ability is now enormous between the top 4 or 5 and Joe Public.

I expect the gap between Casey/Rossi's skills and the average club racer's is just as big. It just isn't as obvious.

  4. For trail riding, the Montesa 4rti is hard to beat. Any time I'm just going for a trail ride, I'll take it over my '10 GG 300. Its even better in the mountains where there are big elevation changes. IMO the suspension works better on the trail than the GG, it gets far better gas mileage, doesn't overheat on long trail climbs and doesn't require rejetting. The extra weight isn't an issue on a trail ride. Sure there is a jump between 3rd and 4th, but, every trials bike I've ever ridden has a jump between the trial gears and the road gears. The gap between 3rd and 4th on the Montesa isn't any more annoying than the gap between 4th and 5th on the GasGas or Beta. FWIW I'm leaving for a Colorado trail ride vacation next week. I have an '07 Montesa 4rti, a '10 GG 300, a '05 KTM 300 and an '07 YZ450F. The bike I'm taking for the Colorado mountain trails is the Montesa...the same bike I took up there a couple weeks ago.

  5. Thanks for posting the instructions! I wish I'd read this before spending an hour in the garage trying to figure out how to get the spring spread to get the tensioner on. :D If I hadn't found this, I would've been giving Mr Stoodley a shout. But, I'm trying to limit the number of "Hi Jon, I'm an idiot" calls I have to make. :D

  6. I have since started using 10/41, and stll use 1st most of the time and find that second is a lot more useable when needed. Also I imagine 5th to be a lot better on the moors. I'm worried that I might be to slow on the road and tracks if I stick with 10/41, How much slower in terms of mph is 10/41?

An 11/42 provides a gear reduction of .261904762. While a 10/41 provides a gear reduction of .243902439. So, the 10/41 is 93.1263858% of 11/42. I don't know the top speed of the GG with the 11/42. But, if its 50mph with 11/42 and assuming its limited by rpm and not hp, the top speed with the 10/41 would be 46.56mph. Given the same 50mph assumption, it'll take 5.3 seconds longer to go 1 mile with the lower gearing.

If my math was wrong, I'm sure we'll find out soon. :)

  7. I am curently doing a report on the success and Quality of the Honda Montesa 4RT so i would very much appreciate your views and opinions to these questions if you could also please stick your first name and where you are from that would be much appriciated so i have as meany sources from as many different areas as possible.

1, what is your opinions on the build quality on the montesa 4rt? fantastic.

2, what is your oppinion's on the current possition of honda montesa 4rt in the trials market compaired to other makes of trials bikes? fantastic bike for club level riders at least to an advanced level. the weight is harder to move around when doing advanced "trick" maneuvers.

3, what is your views on where honda should go to from hear should they continue with the 4 stroke or change back to 2 stroke trials bikes? I just wish it was lighter and the US had an importer.

4, can you please tell me any good and bad points of the 4rt in your on opinion? great on hill climbs. very easy to modulate the power with just the throttle. some complain a problem finding traction. for me, its easier to find traction on it than it is a 2-stroke.

5, Do you think the honda montesa 4RT is the best trials bike that has ever been made (build quality, life expectancy, ride quality, market range]? since I haven't ridden everything else, I can't answer that. but, at my skill level (intermediate/advanced), I can ride it better than any of the other 2010 bikes including my 2010 GasGas 300.

Thank you all in advance your help is very much appriciated.

  8. If you know Ben and Bear from Minnesota, they can give you their perspective of the riding areas down here. They usually come down to some of the Oklahoma events.

In Oklahoma, here's some public areas:

Grand Lake (Langley) - lots of ledges, big rocks and big hills. no access fee

Scipio - 1600 acres and a great trials area. but, you may have a hard time finding the best stuff without a guide. $6 per day access fee. The last 6 miles of road getting here is rough. But, its worth it.

Appalachia Bay - very good trials area but the main trails can get a bit dangerous with all the 4-wheelers. if you know where the trials areas are the 4-wheelers aren't an issue because the quads can't get to them. no access fee

Camp Gruber - some old quarry ledges in the parking lot. some big creek sections with big rocks. no access fee.

Directions to these riding areas can be found here: http://neott.com/directions.asp

Depending on your schedule and the weather, I may be able to show you around.

  9. We had a lad here from england that rode the Texas events for a number of years. Good rider, rode the Texas experts at one time, think he fell back a class to the SR' not sure bout that, but long story made short, as he has moved back to the UK and in the West Yorks district as I recall, he has stated that (as a more relaxed event) he is riding the low line(of three) and having fun, which he would equate to our intermediate class here in Texas. Which YOU would call Advanced!

    Puts things in perspective!

If their low line is the same as a Texas intermediate line, are riders in the West Yorks that are at a Texas novice/amateurs unable to compete? Over 1/2 of the competitors in our club ride at a Texas novice/amateur level and would be unable to enjoy a trial in which the easiest line is at an intermediate level...they'd think the club was trying to kill them.

  10. I have an 09 300 pro which will start easily with the following technique.

    Put bike in gear

with clutch out pull bike bacwards so piston goes to TDC

    pull in clutch

    kick

I now use this method every time I start the bike warm or cold - much easier and a lot less stress on kickstart assembly

THANK-YOU for posting this! I tried this technique yesterday and it makes my new GG 300 MUCH easier to start. The bike has so much compression, sometimes I could barely get the kick starter to move. This technique allowed me to get the piston moving much faster with less effort and it almost always started 1st kick.

    Thanks again!

  11. Everyone I heard discussing the age tie breaker rule in the pits thought it was a great idea. IF Keith, didn't like the new rule, he certainly didn't let it show at the awards ceremony. I was more impressed with him because of his attitude at the awards ceremony than if he'd won the event in a ride off.

  12. I seem to notice lots riding with the NAU helmets these days.. not too pricey either. Any here got them?

I have one and like it. I think its a good looking helmet with better fit and finish than the Shiro I previously wore. The NAU is about the same weight as the Shiro. Even though it doesn't have as many vents as the Shiro, it doesn't seem any hotter. BTW the vents on the Shiro look big on the outside of the helmet, but, when the liner is removed you can see the vents are much smaller than the screens on the exterior.

  13. Nope, I just put the clean filters in a plastic bag in the Garage and retrieve and oil as required. <Latex Gloves at the ready>

The only bad point with pre-oiling, that I see, is the possibility of them picking up dirt while hanging around my garage as it's not exactly an aerospace workshop...

I pre-oil the extra filters, let them dry overnight and put them in a zip lock bag the next day.
