  1. Canceling the trial was absolutely the right decision, when I drove (in my nice warm van) from Dovedale to Hancocks just before 11 the snow was allready laying on the road and the visability was very bad and as I was driving I thought "if the police come by now they will have a field day". Our bikes are, lets face it not really legal for road use. Don't get me wrong I do want road trials to continue and I ride in some myself. I also think that its ridiculous of the law to expect us to fit huge number plates and indicators etc. However when the forecast says that rain is expected, as it did all last week I think all riders should fit lights on there bikes. all new bikes come with lights, now I am sure that someone is going to say that I am wrong but for sure all gas gas and betas come with lights, not strickly road legal lights but lights. As all of you know when it is raining all vehicles in the UK need to have there lights on by law so why do so many of us ignore this? I remember fitting huge lights to my Bultaco years ago and believe me you don't notice having the small lights fitted to a modern bike. Now I am the first person to complain about all the needless Health and Safety crap that is shoved down our throats, BUT The whole point of this is to keep us safe and on the road.

  2. First of all don't get confused with this being the fault of the no-stop rule. The observer should not have given Alexz a 2. The correct score would have been a 5 because he stopped (more than once) and I honestly think that he would have accepted this score rather than the 2 which he didn't have.

The trial was pretty much decided on this 1 section and this is what I saw: The front runners (with the exception of James Fry) completed the section within 5 minutes of each other. Ross Danby 5d the section for stopping. Sam Connor cleaned the section without stopping. As previously mentioned, Alexz stopped but got given a 2. Ricky Wiggins got 5d for stopping. Dan Thorpe cleaned the section without stopping. All riders present were informed that the observer was 'strict' before they made their attempt. The riders that were given 5s were all in trouble, and all had the opportunity to put their feet down to get themselves out of trouble, but they simply held on too long and ran the risk of being given a 5. Later on James Fry cleaned the section without stopping.

The results came in with a 3-way tie for the win on 1 mark. Fry lost the tie on furthest 0, Connor and Thorpe tied for the win.

Alexz was upset at the fact that he had been given a 2, but as mentioned it should have been a 5. To mention that Alexz was denied the win and 'lost' the trial takes away from the fact that Connor and Thorpe genuinely cleaned the section without stopping and therefore deserved their win. I can only presume that Alexz didn't protest because it is an ACU rule that you cant protest against an observers decision unless the CofC deems that a mistake has been made. Just to point out the CofC was present for all these riders' attempts at the section and chose not to over rule his observer.

As for beatabeta's unbiased view of the 'pathetic' no-stop rules, this was the second year of running the Wallace Cup no-stop and it is the second year it has been full up. In fact this year the entry was oversubscribed. Previously they used to have around 60 entries. If the sport carries on with these 'pathetic' rules then it will surely be the end of it!!!!! :wall:

Well I hate to have to disagree with you but Sam Connor did in fact stop on this section, (no. 37) three times, watching the video in the evening confirmed this. Dan Thorpe made the best and completely non stop ride of the top riders.

  3. thanks for the help am already using an additive but would anyone know what figures i should be looking for on a compression test?

A compression test is a bit pointless, if you suspect low compression put in a new ring, if you put in a new ring replace the small end bearing at the same time and when you have the barrel off you can check the big end at the same time.

  4. Thanks for that. I am giong to use the tubeless front because it matches the rear anodised gold rim but I will put a tube in it, I dont think that the tubeless tyres are still available and they wont be as stickey as a modern Michelin.

  5. The brake pads have metallic bits in them to make them work when wet. By heating and then rapid cooling the pads with water it will anneal or soften the metallic pieces in the pads. this will make the brakes much sharper.

I don't think that it matters if the pads are new or old as long as there is some material left on them, however if the pads are worn out there will not be enough material left to have an effect.

  6. Hi Steve,

Fantic UK's Roy Cary had some 125 engines fitted into 80 frames in about 1979 or 1980. these bikes were called the lightweight 125 and were used by their supported schoolboy riders.

I am sure that the lightweight would have been available for sale as well but I do not know how many were sold. I do know that a mate of mine bought one second hand from a

supported rider and it was a very handy little bike, light on the front end and plenty of grip. looks like you have found a "special".

  7. This reply might be a bit late for you but I had a new OKO carb fitted by Chris at Classic Trial a couple of weeks ago. Its the first 200 that he has done and he used a 24mm carb.

The results are very very good. I will be taking it back soon for Chris to check the main jet as on the day I had an exhaust leak, now that the leak is fixed he wants to make sure that its 100%.

It feels okay to me as is, a great improvement.

  8. Ya, But this guy needs a lesson in who produced what.... as I am sure we all know the whitehawk was made by Mick Whitlock in Horndean, Hants. along with the 80 was a 175. he also produced the frames for the Bemish Suzuki.

Keep a look out as I was told at the weekend that the 175 whitehawk may be about to go into production again soon...

  9. I have a 125 twinshock that has a back kick type starter must be the only model with back kick ? It also says on the plate "special" model but it i'm sure it's like a "pro" not really that special ;)

Fantic UK had several 125 specials, there was the "light weight", a 125 engine in a 80 frame and in about 1984 there were 8 or 10 specials made with shortened swinging arms, the headstock moved back and lower seats.

the first two were made for Steve Colley and Neil O'shean (both Fantic supported schoolboy riders) when they went up into the B class at age 12. I did the engineering work for Roy Carey on the 1984 bikes and these were

called "specials" so maybe yours is a modified version.

  10. Hi, does anyone know what the jet sizes are for a 26mm oko carb for a 200 fantic (back kick)? I see that these are available online at a much lower price than else where.
