Yeah thanks I should be able to figure it out, I'm an engineer plus I have done them in tbe past a while ago. Just need to know it theres anything that needs doing that might not be obvious, so far I know that I need to set the oil by measuring the air gap (is this done when the forks are compressed?) And I also know to grease up the seals and install them using some piece of plastic pipe, how much oil will I need? Anything else?

When I first tried learning it on an mtb (17yrs ago) I thought it would be too much to think about at once but eventually it became natural. Granted oits trickier on a motorbike so it'll probably take a lot longer.

Yeah logically I think the back brake is used between hops. Being able to do it on a mountain bike I should have the clutch action timing dialled at least as thats obviously where the back brake is on an mtb so now I just need to factor in the biting point, rear brake action, the balance point of the rear wheel and the whole lurching body movement. Not too much to figure out then!

See video below, I can do this all day long on a mountain bike, when I land on the back wheel I hit the back brake as I 'recock' the pedals ready for the next hop. Want to learn this on my Gas Gas so my question is as there's no need to recock the engine so to speak between hops is it best to still use tbe rear brake or is it best to try to catch it on the clutch?

Spoke to the previous owner today and he has had the forks powder coated white, so I'm all good with the service manual. Whoever done it did a fantastic job!

So '08+ plastics will fit the '04 frame ok?

The previous owner has already started modernising my '04 TXT 280 with Renthal Fat Clamps, Jitsie Bars, wheel rim decals and either newer white legged Marzocchi forks or had the old ones powder coated (yet to be discovered so any info oh how I can tell would be handy). So to finish it off i'll probably do the wheels black and add new plastics and/or decals, so my questions are: Will any of the newer graphics fit the older plastics, if so which ones? Will any of the newer plastics fit the older bike, if so which ones? Thanks in advance :-) The bike, for reference:

Have added a video to the first post :-) Have also watched the video above and thats generally how I start my other bikes, its just this new (to me) Gas Gas dosent seem to like to find TDC or turn the motor over fully for the whole stroke of the lever?

Thats the thing, it wont start if I try to start it normally, if I take the slack up, find tdc and push down, the lever goes down but the engjne does not turn over?

Exactly why I'm asking if it's normal cause iy doesn't feel like it, as said will add a video tomorrow so you can see what I'm on about.

I'm pretty sure they've not been painted as they don't look like normal cast aluminum thats been painted. Will the part number on the legs help anyone to ID them for sure? Need to do the fork seals so need to know exactly whats what.

Bike startas first time assuming I can actually get the engine to turn over, everytime I kick it the lever goes down but I don't think the engine is turning over. Just bought the bike and the guy who sold it to me said that to start it I have to not rest my foot on the lever first and not to take up the slack in the lever before kicking it, he said just to kick it straight off. This does seem to be working as everytime I've started it its been using that technique. I just find it odd because when starting my 4T Supermoto and my '07 rev 3 I rest my foot on the lever, find tdc then kick it, which works every time for those two bikes. Seems either the starter mechanism is knackered on the GasGas or I need a new technique for it? Here's a video of me finding TDC and kicking it, as you can see it seems like I dont get enough motor turning over for the amount of kick start lever travel, I get a loud click and the lever seems to go free for the rest of its travel and doesn't seem to turn the motor over? (Excuse the dirty bike ;-) ) http://youtu.be/Q8CplAIIA3A ***UPDATE*** It does seem to start a lot better when using the choke even when hot so guessing the kickstarter is actually fine and having only been out on it once I assumed that once hot I wouldn't need the choke.

Stantions measure 40mm all the way up and are magnetic, so this means what?
