chrisinspain Posted January 25, 2008 Report Share Posted January 25, 2008 Hi all, I'm a complete beginner when it comes to Trials but I used to race motocross for a few years in my teens so I can ride a bike. I have always wanted a Trials bike and after a ride on a friends bike, I have decided to buy one. A second hand bike from year 2000 on would suit me and my budget I think, but the question is, which one? I weigh 85kg and am 5'10" if thats relevant... scorpa3 Posted January 25, 2008 Report Share Posted January 25, 2008 Welcome to TC. Consider Gas Gas, Beta, Sherco or Scorpa. Buy by condition and spend as much as you can afford. Remember, you only get what you pay for. The newer the better, but a well looked after 6 year old bike will be a better buy than a wrecked one year old bike. I suggest that you pop along to a local trial and ask around, you might even bump into someone you know who will let you try out their bike. To be honest they will all be a hell of a lot better than you need at first and certainly don't discount a good 200. When you have an idea of what you fancy, post a question in the appropriate forum and you will get a list of pro's and con's for that model/year machine. All the best. Any bike thats 7 or 8 years old will have had quite a bit of use so shop around. Look for the obvious things, if you've ridden mx then you'll know a thing or two about bikes? davieboy Posted January 25, 2008 Report Share Posted January 25, 2008 Beta 200.Perfect for a beginner,plenty of power,soft low down. Ok,maybe I'm a bit biased as I have one but having ridden twinshock (badly) for 6 years my first modern bike is a Techno 200 1999 model.It is brilliant for club trials,very easy to ride. I have had a go on most of the 250,270,280's and while the power is great fun for wheelies and mucking about on,most of the time it just gets you into trouble in a section. betapete Posted January 25, 2008 Report Share Posted January 25, 2008 Gotta be a beta or scorpa, I work on the things for a living and the buid quality of the gassers and shercos are appauling In my honest opinion. I get to see everything that goes wrong on these things, and it always seems to boil back to poor materials, and poor engineering, shercos and gassers have improved a small amount, but sherco i think have gone backwards with the amount of warrenty work that has been done recently Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
fastandyc Posted January 25, 2008 Report Share Posted January 25, 2008 well ive owned betas now for a few years!thre ok parts wise etc! was actually told by a dealer here who deals in all makes to avoid 2001 on model gas gas,build quality not great! probably allright for the top guys who can afford to maintain em. for your first bike you want something nice and solid,personally i think the beta is a little more solidy built than most,its a little heavier i think? but that is probably why theve always felt solid! Maybe a 125cc is too small for my 85kg and a 290cc too powerfull? I'm glad the Montesa 315 was mentioned as I had thought this would be a good start and I want something reliable. Is there a big difference between the 315 and 315R? Any obvious things to look for on this bike which need to be replaced?
