Ive just got another TY175 after 11 years being without, the engine number is odd, its just 3 digits 539, dose anyone know why. It has no following numbers and it has not been re-stamped or messed with the crank case is untouched.

Thanks.

It is probably a grey import. This is common, if the lines are there as they are through the numbers and just the model number as you have it sounds like a grey import, nothing to worry about. If the cases were changed back in the day there would not be anything on them. ;)

The cc's should be on the base of the cylinder 174 or whatever?? A lot of 125s were sold when the learner law changed from 250 to 125, Yamaha had a load to shift early 80s, they may have been greys ?? They were sold with full size speedo and indicators etc etc.

In our country the 175 was never imported. When you orderd a 175 at Yamaha germany at that time the deliverd you a 125 with all the paperwork and the 175 kit inclusive(Barrel, piston, jets etc).

On some other motorcycles, replacement cases came blank and the numbers had to be stamped in to match the old.

Maybe your case was replaced at some time in the past.

Here, dumb or not, the title for road registration goes with engine serial number, not frame number like a car. I asked what happens if the engine is ever changed then it would not match the title: 'gee, would anyone ever do that?' and they had no answer.

So not sure if that applies to you.
