April 15, 201016 yr Hi All, Recently, last Wednesday, bought a 290 and just got round to looking it over etc. Condition is rather good for the year with a few oddities. Coolant - OK. Plug B9EG???? - changed back to Std. BP5ES. Clutch Sticking - standard it seems... Air Filter - got bits of leaves etc. in the sock and appeared to be dry? - Cleaned and Oiled, washout airbox too. Then I thought I'd drain the oil and check the clutch. What a pain! Easy to remove the bolt but then the gooy cloudy pickish and light tan oil creeps out slowly onto the skid pan and runs everywhere. Quickly, tilt the bike to try to direct the slop. It takes 20 mins to empty and then I fear the worst as I whip off the clutch cover. Clutch looks fine with no notching of the basket tangs but covered in the thick goo. I clean off what I can and re-assemble. Then comes the slow pouring of oil into the tiny hole that they call a filler. Will be using a 100cc syringe next time. It'll take a few oil swaps to clear this gunk out of the gbox. My main worry is the colour of the goo that came out? Any ideas or seen this before? Thanks in advance! John
April 15, 201016 yr i have seen this before when someone has but the wrong oil it the gearbox. solution is this, drain the oil, refill with petrol plus about 100ml. start the bike on a stand with the rear wheel supported. run through the gears twice up and down the box using the clutch to change gear. imediatley drain the petrol and fill with oil. re-start the bike and do the same up and down the gearbox (riding) until the engine is hot, drain straight away and refill with a quality gearbox oil, all should be ok. hope this helps. April 15, 201016 yr put petrol in the oil? you must be mad... change the oil then get the engine hot, then when its hot change the oil again and do so for the next few rides...
April 15, 201016 yr I agree.....I would never put petrol in the gearbox......for any reason. If you are looking to flush the gearbox out use something that is not explosive....and something that has some lubricating value. If you must put something in the gearbox to wash it out.....use diesel fuel. Is the oil that comes out frothy/milky in color? You may have a coolant leak from the water pump seal.
April 15, 201016 yr Author Hi All, Thanks for the advice. Paul: I did think about putting in petrol to break down the old oil but wimped out. Others: I'll just run it on Saturday for a few hours and then dump the oil again. I'll do this until it comes out clean. I'm pretty sure there is no water leak a the coolant is not going down. That said the water could be from it sitting for a while as the previous owner said he used it 4 times in two years.... This gets me thinking about the thread with the rusty mains bearings. Fingers crossed. By the way, What's the best method for emptying the oil as it seems to fill the sump guard.... John Edited April 15, 201016 yr by JohnnyDudeUK
April 15, 201016 yr strip out the cluthch while you can give it good clean then flush the engine. should do the trick.
April 15, 201016 yr its funny , 15 years in the trade and then i'm suddenly wrong. Hehe, I think you scared them! Ok then, just use diesel!
April 16, 201016 yr Or kero, gives a nice grabby clutch When you dump the oil make sure you remove the filler plug as it helps the oil drain quicker by acting as a vent, leaning the bike over slightly while draining the oil will stop it sitting on the bashplate
