I have acquired a 2005 rt that has done very little work and hasn't been used for some time. I've bought a service kit from pitcocks but I'm at a loss as to which oils I can/ahould use.

Which oils do you use for the transmission and engine?

I have been riding my 4rt now for nearly a year and have been sticking ATF in the gearbox which seems to work fine. But it does require changing regular. So recently I investied in some Elf Htx 740 gear oil which Montesa recommend and to be honest its the dog Bollox. Its not cheap but very good.

Good quality 4 stroke engine oil for the up and down bits and as above ATF or the Elf oil for the whirry round bits. Careful not to overfill the engine oil as evidently can force crank seals out.

I normallly change oil filter every other oil change and change oil 6 to 8 week intervals depending on type of trials ridden.

What are your thoughts on the engine oil, fully synth, part synth? Will decent car 10-40w be fine?

I would go for best you can afford = top race or MX spec. Engine only holds .5lt so if you spend £10 on 1 lt of oil will give you 2 changes. If you are really keen and change it every 5 weeks its a £1 a week.

My local dealer has told me just to put Putoline nano tech 10-40w in both the transmission and the engine. Does the seem okay to do?

That is what is confusing the crap out of me. Advised me not to use ATF as it will eventually destroy the clutch

As recommended by The importer, Castrol Power1 4T 10W-30 in engine and in Transmission, Elf HTX740, works a treat. Castrol can be be bought from the likes of Halfords and Elf is a more specialised oil, but can be bought online from the likes of BVM.

The Elf HTX740 is the Montesa recommended gearbox oil, it is a very thin synthetic gear oil not recommended for clutches by Elf, go figure. Thin oils provide quicker clutch take up and less drag so I started looking for a cheaper thin gear oil. ATFs are gear oil designed to work with wet clutches, exactly what our gear boxes have and the closest oil to the Elf for viscosity is Valvoline synthetic Dextron VI, I like the clutch action better than the Elf oil. The non-Dextron or "F" type ATFs are a bit grabbier if you want faster clutch take up. All of the other oils that I checked were thicker at 40C. So try some different oil and you will find one that suits you.

When I bought my Mont off Pidcocks in July I picked up a service kit at the same time. The oil they supplied me with was Castrol power 1 10/30 semi synthetic for the engine and PJ1 clutch tuner for the gear box.Thats all i've used and have had no problems at all. I change both oils and oil filter every 15 hours religiously, this may be a bit over the top but for what it costs and the small volume of oil in the motors it gives me peace of mind
