Sure it would be a few pounds of weight, but can you imagine getting 'limited slip' type of front assist on that rock ledge? The nice part is the "gearing" is set such, that w/o wheel spin the rear wheel provides all thrust as usual, only when a certain amount of slip occurs, the front starts pulling. January 26, 200422 yr yea they did use it in the paris to dakar. wouldn't be fwd it would be twd (only 2 wheels on a motorbike not 4)
January 26, 200422 yr Yamaha did indeed run a 2 wheel drive bike in this years Dakar. In fact it did very well in the tighter/nastier stages. Won a few of the early ones, but the little 450cc motor couldn't run with the big bikes in the open desert. Very cool concept! January 28, 200422 yr I saw the Yam WR450F 2-Track (to give it its full name) at last year's Stoneleigh show - at first I thought that it was just a standard WR with Ohlins sussies but then you notice what looks like a front drum brake (it's not, it's actually the front wheel drive gears) and all the hydraulic gubbins. For some reason Yamaha let Paul Blezard ride it during one of the African rallies and his report has appeared in TBM and TMX. Brilliant in sand and mud, but not much advantage elsewhere by all accounts. And
