Montesa

  1. Has anyone successfully replaced the drive chain tensioner bushings? Mine is a 2018 and appears to have a solid bush but the replacements (with the correct part number) arrived as a compressed split bush. They also look a little too large. When I look at them, the chance of getting them installed, round and fixed in the swingarm to work with the tensioner seems small. Has anyone done it? Does it work? It does not look good.

  2. Hello new to the forum and looking some help I have acquired a lovely little 1970's montesa cota been told its a 123 or 172 I have engine number 19MO252 and matches on frame can anyone shed some light on year and model? Appreciate your help in advance

my 4rt has started " bogging down" when you go for a big handfull of throttle it bogs down ,if i back it off for a split second it picks up and revs fine , if i go steady on the throttle it picks up revs as normal ,but if i open it up and keep it pinned the revs die and will eventually stall ive cleaned out all the usual bits - air filter fuel filter, anyone got any ideas??

In the EU there's a recall on 2023 models, mine included. On some 2023 models there's an oil channel in the left cover that hasn't been drilled properly. I got notified more than a month ago. Had to do a test according to a dealer document sent by Honda Germany. Here's a short vid of the test. Both pieces of paper have to move. If not, there's an issue. After Honda saw the result, they said they were going to replace the engine which they did. I picked it up today. Excellent service that Honda is doing this. Here's my bike with the new engine which I picked up today.

A new to me 2018 4rt has a plastic guard mounted between the frame and bash plate that extends back to protect the suspension link. It seems like a good idea but also limits the torque that can be applied to the rear bash plate mounting bolts. If the bash plate is considered part of the frame, this seems like a really bad idea. I don't see it on the parts list. However, in addition to the front rubber pad above the bask plate, I see a secondary "pad" that I do not have on the parts list. Could the plastic piece I have be that secondary pad? Is the piece in the picture OEM? What came from the factory?

  6. I'm installing the S3 E start on a 4RT. Near the end of the under fender install, a rubber boot with a number of connectors inside is supposed to get pushed down between the throttle body and frame. This is pretty much the same as the OEM setup but one connector accepts an addition to the harness so there is maybe a little more wire. The problem is that this boot with connectors looks to be twice the size of the space it is supposed to go into and I'm not getting it in place. (The estart kit adds the battery under this area so not as roomy as OEM but I didn't get a good picture of the OEM set up of this area before disassembly.) I have pulled the airbox off again but…

Are there any secrets to removing the chain tensioner pivot bolt on a 2018 300 4rt? So far I have tried penetrating oil, heat and a few heat cycles. Does a steel bolt thread right into an aluminium pivot?

  8. Started by exman,

I think it's time to see what is inside of front forks on my fresh bought 2009 Montesa, upper part is 39mm diameter black coated steel, lower is silver aluminum with NN-3-00-R/L stamped on it, but no Brand. In case that I have to replace some parts, how could I know whether it is Showa or Paioli or something else? And one more: is there any KNOW HOW to repair small dent on the upper (steel) part?

Hi everyone has anyone tried to put a montesa 125 barrel on an mh200 struggling to get a piston for the 200, 125 seems to be easier to get parts for.

Good night. My 301 is the first 4-stroke trial bike I have owned. I'm somewhat lost. Once the bike warms up, the electric fan starts and is on 90 percent of the time. Even on the road going in 4 speed it stays on. When I stop and the engine is idling, the fan stops for a short time and starts again. The periods are very long and continuous. is this normal? The motorcycle has the coolant level, it does not expel it and there is no high temperature in the radiator hoses but the fan is running almost all the time.

  11. I’ve got a new, 1.5 hour Montesa 301. Bike has always been incredibly easy to start. 1-2 lazy kicks and it runs. I had the bike sat for some time running VP Trials fuel, no ethanol. Now coming back to use it, bike goes to start but barley idles on the first kick where it now struggles to stay running. It then takes many kicks before you can get it up and running again, once you get it going you need to crack the throttle to keep the rpm elevated slightly and then from there it runs flawlessly. Is it possible that I may need to swap a spark plug? Not sure what’s causing this with less than 2 hours on the bike.

Anybody that can share some light on this I will be most grateful. I have a 1981 Cota 349, well I think I do ( engine number 51M18349 ), I bought it as a rolling chassis and the engine in boxes. So far I have gone through the Montesa parts manual and found all the missing bits with the exception of 2 parts. Now these don't appear in the Montesa manual one usually gets online, and the difference seems to be my front sprocket is of the splined type and not the usual taper fit with a locking nut. To hold the front sprocket in place there is a sort of sprung cup and a clip which sits in a groove on the end of the output shaft. the clip on mine is broken in two pi…

Hello. I bought a brand new 4 Ride in April last. Ran it in for 260 miles before servicing it prior to a weekend trail riding in N Wales. The oil filter was bone dry with a dribble of oil sitting inside the filter housing. Aaaargh! Fortunately I still had my old CRF for the weekend and the 4 Ride went into the dealer a couple of days later. They said that there was no issue that they could find as they replaced the filter, ran the bike and opened it up again to find oil as they would expect to see. Vaguely reassured, I took it to France for three days trail riding and then to Devon in December, nearly 400 miles. Took it apart for an oil service and found…

Hi guys, long time no see, hope everyone is doing well. OK, what is the current situation for Cota 200C parts, still miserable? ...are kickstart gears and piston kits an issue as they used to be? Anything else I need to know? Looking to pick one up in the near future after selling my 247C and 248 a few years back. Best regards guys and thanks for your help. 😎

Hi all, I have a 67 reg 4 ride which has 2600 miles on & was wondering if you guys & girls had any knowledge of adjusting the valve clearances cos it sounds like it might need a small tweak here & there. I think I’m at the sort of mileage now where it needs it . I hope the job is not too far out of my ability though ! Thanks in advance

I haven't written anything here in years but now I have information that I think some will be interested in. This will be quite technical so bear with me. I am writing this from the standpoint that you know how the use the HRC software to change the mapping in the ECU. More info to come. Background Almost a year ago now I came across some software developed to flash the ECU of different Honda motorcycles. Being an engineer I started to wonder if it would be possible to use on the 4rt. I have always been annoyed that the HRC software only lets you modify fuel and spark advance in relation to some maps that are unknown. After some research I found that the flash sof…

I have a 2016 Montess Cota 300RR (MRT300G) with running issues that I have narrowed down to the fuel pump. We replaced the gas in it but due to the shape we weren't able to see very deep into the tank. So we chased our tails a little bit on other issues and eventually got frustrated and put a strap on it and pulled it through the parking lot hoping to get it to start and got it to fire a bit, which is more than what we had at this point. Now due to the foul smell of bad fuel coming from the machine we figured it just took that much to get all of the new fuel into the lines, but it still wouldn't start. Sprayed some stuff in the airbox, kicked it good and it started up. So…

Hey guys... I'm new here and new to trials bikes. I bought a 99 Montesa Cota 315r and it is over heating. I tested the fan (shorting the plug and starting the bike) and the fan spins fine. I tested the thermo switch and it's fine too. What else should I check??? Any ideas of what could be wrong??? Last time I rode it I THINK I noticed the fan spinning kind of slower when it overheated but I shut it off fast so Im not really sure. I'm using regular 50/50 coolant mix. Please help... I wanna go and play!
