That date sounds good . I'll be there July17-18. The other component of all this needs to be to let riders at sign-up know that there is a T/S class at the event! I remember the first time I went to a trials. I wished someone had said to me ....." Oh I see you have a 1979 Bultaco Sherpa T."" You know we have a twinshock class for the older bikes, right?" When we see the guys that have been riding T/S bikes in other classes they could be directed to T/S instead. I don't agree that there should be an A and B line! Run them all together. It's enough work to score 1 more class, let alone 2. The winner for the year is simply the twinshock champ. If we got a lot more bikes in the future you could always make it A/B too.
There was a guy riding an old RL250 at the Oct. Whitmore lk. round that needed help and picked the wrong class to ride. I saw him out in the sections and he was really struggling....wrong class, learner, on a badly set up bike. I tried to help him and hope he comes back again. He would do much better against bikes of his era and I felt that we,as participants that know what is happening, failed him. I plan to personally talk to anyone with a T/S in 2010 and try to get this class rolling if the clubs will offer the line.

You have to remember that if Bernie were BOUs age then he would have grown up with the same kind of bikes and riding. My opinion is that they all share some common denominators over the ages: Great balance, exceptional eyesight, determination, improvisation, the best machinery at the time, ahead of others as to technique. In that respect Bernie would be one of the best today if you could restart the clock. I still like to say that we should never compare these guys though. Let's honor them just as they were and leave it at that. BEST EVER?...Probably hasn't been born yet!
-
Jim G......The MOTA has last yrs schedule on it yet. Looks like the same wknd though. You will be head on with VMD if you keep the same wknd as 09 it looks like. BUMMER! I wish they would leave that VMD date alone. They are not only messing with you but also Wauseon,OH AMC meet also by changing the date so much. Your vintage /TS guys will go to VMD.
-
What is that July date Brockway? They just changed Mid-O VMD to the wknd of July 9-11 for 2010. I wish they would stop moving it around. I will be there if it's not vs VMD.

Axulsuv......Were you addressing my post? I couldn't disagree with you more if you were! Price has little to do with the quality of a helmet. I am not a slave to brand names, nor do I look for the most expensive one of anything! I look at the construction of the helmet, liner quality and test procedure and I do compare prices. I stand by my statement that DEDICATED trials helmets are grossly overpriced ... The A1R helmet is a great lid at a great price. Trials helmets are generally expensive because they are low volume units not because they are such great quality.
-
Sam. Trials helmets are crazy expensive. Try this one that I use.....Z1R Metro, a scooter helmet. Light, cool looking, inexpensive(25% of the cost of the others), DOT approved, comes in a zillion colors, fits well and I personally crash tested mine in a TN ravine with no head injuries. A1R has a website. A reasonable alternative to a $300, hard to find helmet. They even come in PINK for the wife!!!

Actually they said it to their buddy(one of my competitors) and not to me, so they were probably goading him...not me. I always feel welcome at a MOTA event. Hear that all you TI and AHRMA riders!!!!! These guys will work with you and provide a great practice venue.
-
Well since I already run against twinshocks and vintage bikes with the KT(as well as brand new bikes in novice) I think including anything with drum brakes, TS and aircooled is very fair. You have to be practical with this but ITSA and TI have the more practical, inclusive rules than AHRMA. I am saying to just group them all....rider skill and everything into 1 group. Also just use the same novice line but maybe call the class TS on # plate. Not trying to make this harder for clubs as far as section layout.
As to what might happen as far as participation goes, I think that a lot of vintage/TS riders are in the MOTA region and are just waiting for some sort of advertised overture on the part of MOTA to feel welcome. That joint TI event in V-ville was a good idea and I know that Sam has been openly trying to expand TS within the Michiana club.(Sorry Sam but you run your event before I come back North or I would be there). It seems like a win-win for MOTA and TI to run crossover events to me. It's amazing how many old trials bikes are really out there in MI,IN and OH as many of you saw at MID-O VMD in 2008. The baby-boomers are really thrilled by this old trials iron and are still able to ride it unlike MX. This might end up being your biggest class. It's all $$$$$ to MOTA no matter what they ride.
-
Is there any chance that a vintage line could be added in the MOTA rounds for the 2010 season? Looks like we have at least 5 twinshock/vintage bikes that I regularly see at events and this seems like enough for a class. I think that you just use the novice line and put nov or vin on the plate and score them against each other.
-
Just rode 2 MOTA events in 09 Zippy, Vermontville and Whitmore LK. Will see you guys more in 2010 though as I plan to ride more trials. I am never sure how the modern bike guys feel about running against a vintage bike in the lower classes however. Everyone there is very friendly in MOTA but I overheard one guy call me a "ringer". How can a 60 yr.old guy on a m/c built in Gerald Fords administration be a ringer against those new bikes? Well, Novice class next year all season. Wish you guys would have a dedicated "Vintage line" (Novice is great) so we could run for a championship. I think we have enough bikes for a class. Thanks for the welcome.

Welcome to the forum Squid. If you need help on that TY you found the right place....
-
Wow...just looked up Cedarville CA on my atlas....Way up and out there. Bet it is beautiful though. See what you mean about Orygun being the place you look at to compete though. Any modern trials assns. up in Orygun that you can run with?
-
And don't forget the rear shock length could be longer or altered on one of them which Tucks the front in also. The easy way to tuck more is longer shocks which a stock TY needs anyway.
-
Part 2 of your post...where to get tires????? I have great luck with Tire Xpress (Competition Accessories Tire warehouse) in Ohio. They have IRCs and Michelins in stock.
-
17 rounds .....3 in the NorthEastern portion of the country and above the Mason-Dixon line! No wonder AHRMA can't keep Midwestern riders! Now throw in new competition from ITSA and TI and it doesn't look good for AHRMAs future. Apparently even the loss of Mid-Ohio was not a wake up call for the administration... Oh and Casey is missing now too... probably gone over to the TI or ITSA format. You guys need to open up to kids riding and twinshocks and come to the AMA with your hat in your hand. It was a good ride while it lasted but it's over.
-
OK......so back to the OP.... I would look for a TY175 if you are smaller or a TY250 if you are bigger. The 175 is hard to find but works great and is a lot lighter. The ease of getting parts is a primary consideration if you are in the USA. The KTs are hard to get parts for and the aftermarket system is not good on them. They all will work if you know what to do with them.
SO what do I ride?................ A KT250.
-
Don't overlook the IRC TR011F Trials Winner front as they work well and are the least expensive of the lot. I would say to match your rear with the front that goes with it.
-
Beautiful bikes you guys. Mine is not that pretty, kind of a road warrior version of those but it works very well especially now that dabbinbob worked his magic on it.
-
I Run 50:1 car racing gas (Torco, Cam 2) in mine mixed with Maxima 927. No fouled plugs, no detonation and runs great.
-
One word for you guys........................MIKUNI
-
Loading pictures seems to be difficult on here Sam. I tried it too. No dice. Some sort of URL vs. JPeg thing I guess.
-
Now that is what I call determination. Way to go on a fix to keep riding!
-
Hey dabbinbob; just wanted to tell you how much fun I had at the Ranch and the Natls this year.Big Bartons River was really fun and the KT ran like a top. I always learn a lot when I go down there. Sorry I am so tardy at thanking you for all your help. I do need to get hold of "the Captain" though. TN showed me I need that skidplate! Maybe we will see you next yr. too and hopefully the weather will be more cooperative. A huge turnout would be great. Jeff A.

Hey sdm welcome to the site. How are you coming with that new bike dude? You will like this site especially the Bultacos section. Lots of good info on here too. Yes, you know me as buls4evr Sam. Since the Bul is gone I have the new username. How about some pix of that new bike as it developes?
-
Have been lurking on the site for a while and thought it was time to post. I ride a KT 250 Kawasaki in vintage trials and have done so since about 1998 off and on. I try to ride a lot of different events in different orgs. This year rode some MOTA events and the NATC round in Sept in Dickson,TN. I usually ride in OH at VMD but took a yr off so the AMA could get it's act together. I will be back there next year, plus plan to run some TI events in the midwest.
I also ride dualsport on a Suz DRZ400 and some of you know me as buls4evr on advrider site. I live in New Mexico in the Jan-May months each year as I hate winter weather so will be leaving soon. This yr. my friends and I rode the Hanging Rock 200 AMA DS natl in Zaleski, OH in May. Lots of fun.
I also ride a BMW K1200RS on the road and love to explore the NM and AZ canyon roads. I logged about 10K this year on a road bike and rode in NM,AZ, MI, IL,IN, OH& KY. I retired in 2002 so pretty much I just ride now for a living. Hope I can be a regular contributor. Jeff
