  1. You could try Rhys at TrakSpares Connah's Key, nice fella. He does trials boots and good prices on michelin trials tyres, not sure about helmets tho. He's on 01244822510
  2. This is a long shot but the sand colour may not be of military origin. I worked in Vauxhalls car plant paint unit and the first stage of paint on the car body is electrophoretic priming. The shell is dipped and current used to promote a thin layer of water thick primer to adhere to all parts, even inside box sections and between spot welded sheet metal. At the factory many of us primed our own items this way by placing them inside the car body, motorbike frames, fuel tanks, garden gates etc. The primed item is then ovened and comes out a light biscuit yellow. The coating is very thin but is through enough to stop mild steel rusting if left outside in rain for several months. Sounds like someone primed your wheel in this way, for whatever reason.
  3. Hi, I would ask normal questions on how long they have had the bike, how its been used and what has been done to it during the ownership. Although is down to trust whether you believe the answers you can get a feel for the seller. I bought an 02 bike and while it was ridable i did have to replace a fair few wear parts to be happy with it although the engine has been completly sound. I did have to replace, wheel bearings, headset bearings, chain and sprockets, chain tensioner, rubber chain runner over swingarm, fork seals, fuel lines, rear tyre (perished, not wear), air filter, exhaust seals and all fluids. Plus i had to replace a few damaged fasteners and go over the whole bike inc stripdown/clean of carb . Items like the chain runner are easy things to overlook but they become a factor with an older bike. If the bike you are looking at has worn/hooked sprockets you can guess the bearings seals ands fluids maybe past best as they are items that are often ignored more than obvious parts. A very tidy little used bike can be worse than a well used and maintained bike as my bike was the former and is now bit more care worn but totally solid on maintenance. As long as the wheels are straight, the motor is solid and the forks surfaces are dent free its up to you on the asking price and what parts you are prepared to throw at it. . . Just my 2ps worth Happy New Year
  4. The milkshake is emulsified oil and water. they will not mix at a chemical level so the froth is what you are left with. There is likely to be a pump issue as already mentioned or possibly a leak from the water jacket gaskets on the barrel. Pump seems to be most likely at this stage from collective experience. If you strip the top end have a gasket set ready.
  5. I too was suprised at the lack of oil to be premixed on modern trials but i suppose engine tolerances and materials have come along way since the 80's and also the bike doesn't spend 80% of its time flat out at sky high revs like road two stroke. The only thing i could add is check for exhaust or carb inlet leaks. two strokes are very sensitive to an exhaust leak at the cylinder or soon after, my old ts would not run with only a tiny split in the expansion chamber.
  6. Update: Fitted a new rectifier today and solved the problem. For U.K. guys it can be sourced from motomerlin for
  7. Well i'm new here and to be honest i'd rather get a few genuine informative replies to a technical question rather than a load of guesses from multiple replies. I've have great input to all my posts. If you are expecting a lot of replies to your project post i wish you good luck with it but anyone riding a bike more than about ten years old is riding a constant project anyway. My 02 bike has required quite a few parts already and with the nature of the sport stuff gets battered and requires attention. The trials guys just seem to get on with it and not make a drama because lets face it you have to be a bit hands on already and be prepared to do the work to keep it cheap. Don't mistake it for a stand offish response. There is probably less hot air than you are used to on the forum but the information and help is there. Get running and do a trial and you will find folk bending over backwards to help you out. No offence intended, Dodge
  8. Managed to get a bit further on the bike tonight. Tried the tstat bypass with no joy. Found a wiring diagram online from the ever helpful Jim Snell which gives resistance readings for the wires from the stator. I got 0.7ohms between the yellow and earth which is the wire that links to the tstat from the stator (0.5ohms given on diagram) and 97ohms between the two blue wires from the stator to the CDI (stated 100.5ohms by Jim). no earth leakage was found as stated. I think this is probably close enough to call good. Have belled out all the remaining wires on th lights and fan side with no issues so i think i'm down to the regulator or rectifier. Ran out of light so will check tomorrow to see whether the regulated 12vac is present to the rectifier. At least i now know i have the japanese electrical system and not ducati sourced electricals which are no doubt made of the finest engineering cheese and disolve instantly in the first puddle. . . (waits to be called wrong)
  9. Will give it a quick check to rule it out completely, Thanks
  10. Thanks Jon, Thats great information, will carry out some more testing tomorrow, only had what gear i had in the van at the time. Are the coils on the stator easily accessable for testing under the engine side cover or does it require removing the stator from the crank? Does anyone know the resistance i should expect to see through each coil? Anyway, at least the day wasn't a waste as i got to have a blast on my mates 300 Raga and try out a scorpa Cheers, Roger
  11. Hi, I have a Gas Gas TXT 02 edition 250 and i could do with some help working out why the fan won't run. Have not had an issue with it before but today i noticed after 10 mins riding some coolant was coming from the overpressure drain pipe and the fan wasn't running. I stopped it straight away. I have connected a 12v battery to the fan connector and the fan runs fine. I have checked the temp sensor/tstat with a meter and it is open circuit when the bike is cold and is closed circuit when the bike gets hot. have cleaned up the spade connectors and checked where possible and the wires seem to bell out ok. The item i cannot test is the small square electrical unit screwed to the rad, the cables are encapsulaed as they go into it. What is the function of this part? Could it be stopping the fan from getting 12v? Am i right in thinking if the bike can run it must be generating 12v o.k. otherwise there would be no spark? Any help would be greatly appreciated Roger
  12. Thanks Les, Got the results in the post, didn't know they had gone public tho, the shame! Didn't have quite as much spare time of late so the bike hasn't been out since the Frodsham round have got the acu form downloaded now so will have to show my face soon to get that stamped and away. Hope to get a decent practice in saturday aft and try some new bar positions. Jez, Will send you a pm mate. i finish work at 12 on saturday so i'm good to go from then. Or maybe tommorrow evening but i'll have to check the bike over first.
  13. Yes that was me. Been meaning to post a thank you to Les for steering me in the right direction (no pun intended ) and to pete and his mate on the vintage machines who walked me through the sections and first lap and gave me plenty of pointers through out the day. Met plenty of friendly people all day so couldn't have hoped for a better day really As for the riding it was a mixed bag of nerves, school boy errors and the occasional clean, i did enjoy all of the sections though and there was nothing i really didn't want to try so as a beginner the whites were challenging but not soul destroying. Probably helped being a dry day tho. All in all i had a blast so just need to get a proper lid and a lot more practise in. A final thanks to all who had patience while i dragged the often inverted gas gas out of the section. Roger
  14. So i can run the event without first getting the licence? Or just a bit of practice? If i can run the event i'll need to make a number plate up tomorrow as i've got the light unit fitted at the moment. Either way i'll see you there
  15. Just found the Frodsham and District M.C.C site with directions to the venue Thats my sunday sorted then Big thanks for the tip off
  16. Hi, I know frodsham a bit, i get my rc stuff from steve webb models. Is it tomorrow or sunday? I'm definately up for having a look
  17. Thanks guys, I'll have a surf to see if i can find anything happening locally this weekend and go for a look. Will look at some more trials specific kit when the budget allows Many Thanks, Roger
  18. Hi Everyone, I have done a few searches on the forum but can't find a how to on starting competing in the sport, maybe i'm looking in the wrong place tho. As a bit of background i'm 30yo and have got hold of a Gas Gas TXT02, the edition model not the pro. The bike came from a friend who works in the desert on oil refineries and when he's back he rides motorcross so the Gas Gas was getting no use. My last bike was a suzuki ts185 when i was 17 and i did woodland trails etc I have stripped it down and done the usual things, chain and sprox, fork seals, cleaned out the carb, bled the lines etc and have done about six hours practise on it now. The bike runs good and it was great to work on aside from a few seized fastners. Where i ride is very undulating with some sleep climbs and narrow routes, am at the stage now where i can do steep climbs, ruts, lift the front wheel over obsticals, i can clear an 12inch dia log with the wheelie and hop over method. I am a firm believer in that you learn by doing and that you progress at a rate directly related to your environment so i'm keen on competing in a trial As for kit i have a full face mx helmet with acu gold star(i wanted teeth protection at this stage) jersey and mx pants, trials gloves, some old vendramini trials boots and a textile armoured jacket. I have jerry cans, tyre inflator,a stand and a van to put it all in. So for the questions: Is there any equipment i am missing out on that i'll need? Also how and where do i acquire a license to compete and what do i need to prove to get this license? Do i need to be a member of a club to get a license? Can anyone recommend a club in or near the wirral area? I don't mind travelling a bit. P.s. Sorry for the war and peace first post Any advice would be really appreciated, Thanks, Roger TheDodge
