According to Classic no-stop rules every rider in this video should have received fives. Some fived the sections multiple times. What were their actual scores? It is interesting to note that the scoring wasn't any better with the stop allowed rules. The sport needs professionally trained and paid observers to travel to each event. Otherwise the WTC events are a total farce and meaningless to the sport.
My curiosity about the picture led me to send an email to Adrian to find out more about the bike. I received no response and am now more curious than ever.
I bought a used Gas Gas TXT 200 and converted to electric. I used a Briggs and Stratton E tek motor direct drive (11 / 60) gearing with a 428 chain / sprocket that I made. I use a battery pack made from RC car LiPo cells, 42 volts, 20 amphour. Am loving it, ride it every day in a residential area with no complaints. The bike weighs 145 pounds and makes just under 20 HP, lots of torque.
Would be interested to know from those of you who have experience with electric bikes what would be a typical riding period one could experience with a full charge. Are the batteries easily changed so you could ride a typical event of 4-5 hours?
searched the forum but could find what i was looking for.. what i want to no is how much ATF oil should i put in my 2002 gas gas txt 280?? iv been told 700ml by the garage i got it from, but few others iv spoken to say, 450ml and as theres no dip stick on the bike i have no idea what i should put in. I put 700ml in on the last oil change but just seems alot and to change it every few rides costs a bit.. any one help me?? im using motul dexron iii atf if that makes a difference?? thanks in advance
Use 380cc's of ATF. Using the case sight glass it will show up as half way up the window.
I am still a firm believer in the more sensible sections resulting from the no stop rules. When less than 15 riders are participating in the World class sections there needs to be changes made. The severity level of sections set up with no stop in mind would result in greater participation at that level and improve ridership at all levels of competition. On the local level riders (those who work and have families) would be more encouraged to ride. In my district the ridership is dwindling more and more each year. Over the years the number of riders has deteriorated from normal levels of 75-100 down to 25-35 riders per event. The interest in vintage events appear to be increasing each year. These events run no stop rules and and have more sensible sections. If changes are not made soon trials interest will completely disappear in just a few years. Now is the time to make the necessary changes to save the sport.
Use of any sealant with a silicon base is not a good practice. Silicon promotes the oxidation of aluminum. This also holds true when used on rims to eliminate leaks.
Hello, I am very interested into getting into the world of trials (and maybe observed trials competition). I am now a B Class Motocross racer looking for another motorcycle sport to attempt, and trials has very much intrigued me. I am looking to buy a motorcyle shortly (because fall seems to be the best time to buy a motorcycle). I have found several in my area, but are looking for some input.
What size bike should I be looking for? I am 6' 1" and weigh 215 lbs without gear (athletic )
How much should I look to spend on a decent bike?
I know what a MX bike would cost, but trials seems to be their own market by far. I am looking at a couple bikes here locally and they seemed to be priced more than KBB and way more than NADA. What would most people value a 2000 Gas Gas TXT 321?...KBB says $1900, NADA is $1000...I have no point to understand if I will be overpaying...any suggestions?
Thanks!!!! I look forward to riding trials.
Check with Mike Komer at the Tryals Shop in Locke, NY. He has many good used bikes at fair prices that he backs up. Phone: (315) 497-3268 or check out his web page at www.tryalsshop.com. There are pics of a few of the bikes he has available in the used bike section.
Well I have just finished replacing the rubber 'O' rings in the fuel system on my BMW street bike, and another carb clean on my Scorpa SY250F. When I drained the fuel from my Scorpa I drained it into a clear glass jar, after two days it had about 1/2" of a creamy colored substance at the bottom of the jar. I suspect it is the ethanol with contaminants form the fuel system and water. My local parts supplier recommends a Lucas additive that I have just added. Any experience with fuel additives that work? Cleaning cabs after pushing the bike out of the woods is not my idea of a fun trials. I do not want to think about replacing the tanks on my vintage bikes with plastic tanks.
There has been a lot of discussion on Trials Central about all of the damage and possible solutions to the ethanol problem especially in small engines in the past. Type in ethanol in the search bar and you can get all you need to know about the ethanol problem. Many of your fellow competitors in D-4 have switched over to avgas 100 both with and/or without stabilizer added. Pure gas has not been obtainable in D-4 for more than a year. The largest Trials bike dealer in the district has been using Avgas 100 for a couple of years with excellent results. I have been using avgas 100 with stabil for some time for all of my small engine equipment (bikes, lawnmower, ORV, etc). It is available in all of the big box stores and car parts stores in the Rochester area. Starbrite is another possibility and is also available in the stores mentioned. You will save yourself a lot of time and expense maintaining your bikes if you stay away from ethanol based gas.
Thanks for the info. Do you anyone who may have a Vintage Fantic they would sell? Thanks Phil
You might want to contact Gary at Gumby26. He has a few reconditioned Fantics. He lives locally so it would be easy for you to see the bikes he has done. Gary makes all of his vintage bikes look like they just came off the showroom floor.
I sealed my Alpina's tank with Caswell and painted it 5 years ago. I had zero problems with it until the summer of 2008. I'm in Maryland (MAVT area). That was when gas prices spiked. It was also when all of our pump gas finally had ethanol added to it. My tank started blistering. I've heard some say the ethanol eats the tanks and others say it won't. I just know what happened to my tank. After leaving gas in it for 4 years, I now drain all of the gas out every time I ride.

Be very careful about making a blank statement about all gasoline having ethanol. I have done a lot of research on this subject when I started having a 5% reduction in fuel economy in my car when using known gasoline containing ethanol. Most gasolines in New York State donot contain ethanol. Here the pumps are labeled with the ethanol content (usually 10%, some 15%). Check with the local distributors in your area to find out which brands have it. I have had feedback from some trials riders that the ethanol ruins carburetor rubber seals and alloy fuel tanks on modern trials bikes. I would personally recommend that all trials bike owners do not use ethanol in their tanks (bikes or cars) - stick with regular pure gasoline or aviation gas. It will save you a lot of future problems.
Since I could not find a 10 tooth countershaft sprocket either in Europe or here in the USA I had to keep the 11 tooth. The sprocket for the four stroke was changed from that used on the two strokes by providing an offset milled out area on the outside. Changing from an 11 tooth to a 10 tooth using the same rear sprocket (42) would result in an overall ratio of 4.20. I settled on the 11 and increased the rear sprocket to (44) for an overall gear ratio of 4.40. This turned out to be the perfect ratio for this bike.
Business trip so not my money !! but point taken, mind you $14 is still a lot to pay for water .....
I have never understood the need to BUY water. The water coming out of the tap is free and of much better quality than bottled water. I guess P.T Barnum was right - "there is a sucker born every minute".
