Report Anything Interesting That You Have To Tell Us About The History About Your Bully? in Bultaco Posted April 9, 2015 Bondy & Scott & all, We have had bad luck with this particular set up FOREVER (bellows hose) & thought with the new stuff all would be good. #1 failure: 5 years & discovered on prep (recent buy) exhaust side bottom of bellows split. #2 failure 3 years pin holes along mold line. #3 failure 3 years what looks like ozone damage bottom of bellows. Please note all bikes are kept inside & clean. I am afraid to look @ my 199 as it still has a bellows hose? Charley got into this when prepping his son's bike for NATC, he found the best way to check was sunlight & looking inside for light penetrating. This has really got us thinking of adapting old air boxes ( M92 ect) & radiator hose, loud but less worry. Please check yours; (cost a rebuild not long ago) Larry
Report Action Shots in Bultaco Posted April 8, 2015 Well I guess mayhap there are mostly garage queens out there after all !!! Come on guys please contribute. Tripp & Jimmy having fun. Larry 3
Report Anything Interesting That You Have To Tell Us About The History About Your Bully? in Bultaco Posted April 8, 2015 For all of us using the replacement air filter/bellows hose combination, most often used on199 series; and thinking all is well. It isn't !!! During prep for NATC rounds coming up it was discovered the bellows hose goes to heck in hand basket not unlike the originals. If everyone already knows this, then disregard this warning. Watch out. Larry
Report 199B Fork Legs in Bultaco Posted April 7, 2015 Bondy, be sure you have found a proper fork seal!!Beforeyou install them do the trick thing (not mine but it works) Take the spring out of the seal & unscrew it @ the joint, cut off 1/4 inch of female end , screw it back together & re-install in seal , be sure to place spring side down, I have used this way with great success. Larry
Report 199B Fork Legs in Bultaco Posted April 7, 2015 Bondy, I just woke up that there was a new thread! Only my opinion and as such take it from there. If you really want to kill the nice smooth, soft, front end be sure to put 4 seals in. Should you like them to work properly use 1 seal per slider 35x47x10 ish as Graham noted and be sure the caps are breathing (both out & in) Usually the cut in the side of the LH slider is a radius (hub rub) . Report Anything Interesting That You Have To Tell Us About The History About Your Bully? in Bultaco Posted April 7, 2015 Really nice sidestand work!!! You must show us the rest of the bike as I see other mods & tell us the history. As I am sure you are aware that I personally have never seen a B model in my vicinity that was up & running. I also understand 198B's mostly went to the UK so its always of interest to see the later bikes. By the way is the internal stand spring of your doing? On another note our young friend who competes in the USA Nationals, will be headed for Amarillo, Texas this Friday. Bultaco M199, RH rod brake the latest mod. More to come later. Larry 1
Report Action Shots in Bultaco Posted April 6, 2015 Enjoyed having Tripp at home with us & had a good ride (I can still walk). Running out of time right now (gotta go fishin), I cut Davids' head off but the size of the rock doesn't change (digital camera in the sun) sorry!!! More later. Larry 4
Report Anything Interesting That You Have To Tell Us About The History About Your Bully? in Bultaco Posted April 4, 2015 OK silly me forgot to put my brain in gear prior to finding the proper key and post the sweat & tears of my friends result, I lent moral support & perhaps a little labor (very little) but we are OK now. Larry 2
Report Anything Interesting That You Have To Tell Us About The History About Your Bully? in Bultaco Posted April 4, 2015 Well fellows here we go with a history lesson of the first 199A that Charley & I drove farther than we will divulge to retrieve. It turned out to be not as nice as the photos on Evil Bay, but what the heck we have it captured & will after much moaning on my part (all the way home) , soon thought it prudent to do a little touch up and see what could happen. Soon discovered might be a little more than a touch up (mayhap the bike could have been a submarine part time)??? All's well now. Hope you enjoy & will participate. Larry 2
Report Another Frame Identification Post in Bultaco Posted April 3, 2015 · Edited April 3, 2015 by lbhbul Well there is certainly a mystery here with numbers, mayhap wont get resolved soon, In the meantime enjoy doing what ever you like & just be sure to ride em hard & put them away clean. Larry Yeah, I missed it that far. 4
Report Anything Interesting That You Have To Tell Us About The History About Your Bully? in Bultaco Posted April 1, 2015 Scott, If I were to think about that, I would, If you can arc weld use 316L rod, a stainless rod that is "The Tackers Favorite" due to its flexibility. Quite expensive but should be well suited. Read this in a book & have used it in the past. Only a suggestion. Larry
Report Bultaco Flywheel Woes in Bultaco Posted April 1, 2015 · Edited April 1, 2015 by lbhbul Bondy, First off thanks for the B mod flywheel comparision, I suppose the smaller wheel would certainly help the 250 out. I wanted to show 2 ways to help the original poster a little bit; don't you all know how quick the Alpina would be with the duplex wheel, and it would be fine with the 250 wheel also I believe, just say maybe 50 teeth or so for trials possibly. Larry
Report Bultaco Flywheel Woes in Bultaco Posted April 1, 2015 · Edited April 1, 2015 by lbhbul Have 2 mod 92 in the shop today ( square cases, clutch adjuster on RH side) the wheel below is identical to the mod 85 250 that is on the shelf , at one time I knew the exact difference in weight but I think it was 8 oz lighter, as a point in fact we put it on our young lads competition bike for fun & his only comment was "I have lost my traction a bit" As for the Alp with the broke wheel, probably either would suffice Went searching & the early M 10 ect 250 cc W/ clutch adjustment on LH side are indeed quite rounded, & would certainly foul M 92 wheel shoulders. Report Anything Interesting That You Have To Tell Us About The History About Your Bully? in Bultaco Posted March 31, 2015 Lorenzo, its not my floor but a good friends where we set around and tell stories, Charley has a sign that if I remember correctly his lady friend gave him; OLD F**T'S GARAGE. As to the cracks don't know but they can be interesting when rolling around on stools & makes you very careful when dropping things. Scott that is really a good looking bike & we'll get the slack out of things, I hope it has a head steady. Several mods I see! Larry 1
Report Anything Interesting That You Have To Tell Us About The History About Your Bully? in Bultaco Posted March 29, 2015 · Edited March 29, 2015 by lbhbul Well I know there has got to be something going on that is interesting to us , or are we keeping it a big secret or what. Its show & tell time surely, or not. Here is my next project, if I survive riding tomorrow. Action pictures to follow maybe. Motor mount repair. Makes you wonder where it's been. Larry 1
Report Anything Interesting That You Have To Tell Us About The History About Your Bully? in Bultaco Posted March 29, 2015 Well I see not much going on here, so I suppose we can help maybe??? This 199 is of the later variety nearly an A but not quite. Needed a clutch tune up & 300 cc of Dexron, works fine now 4 springs = 1 finger pull. Larry 2
Report Bultaco Re Liner in Bultaco Posted March 28, 2015 Ralph, the way I machined a full wheel in 1978 was indeed @ our local rail yard on the lathe they machined wheels on, it was big & awkward but easy enough to chuck the comp wheel, bore, press liner, bore to size, get home 4 hours later (made the liner earlier) never did another after this Larry.
Report Bultaco Re Liner in Bultaco Posted March 28, 2015 Thanks for the response. Smelling how did you hold the shoes tight against the cam? A thought I had along this line was a small turnbuckle, there I go over thinking again, Ralphs zip tie & wire worked for him, haven't tried it but we know it works. By the way I rode a 199 today that had the best RH cable brake ever!! It had a heavy inner & outer cable, but I think the stock old shoes made a large difference, wish I knew if that lining can be duplicated, I suppose I could take my 199 shoes as they are still OEM.
Report Bultaco Re Liner in Bultaco Posted March 27, 2015 Ralph, very good, really just what I needed to shove my old head in the proper direction keep it simple is always the best. The main thought about the wheel being mounted is the cost of lacing, because I usually am capable of breaking spokes in a retrue mode, they tend to grow together in time, even using torch judiciously, still tough & wouldn't care to try unlacing let alone getting the offset right, but those who do such would not worry about my fears. Thank you for pictures and good luck with your build. Larry 1
Report Bultaco Re Liner in Bultaco Posted March 27, 2015 · Edited March 27, 2015 by lbhbul Checked out prices on this side of the pond; setup & bore .25 oversize, Fab liner; press fit; bore liner; (must be true to bearings) true brake shoes (tooling????), please note wheel mounted. Many dollars over here 3+ x above. Have a Nice day Larry ;PS I wish someone would show & tell about brake lining truing, it must be simple tooling, if I should figure it out I will share with all interested. 1
Report Bultaco Re Liner in Bultaco Posted March 26, 2015 I should have done that - that would have been perfection Being a machinist for some time; I guess I need to see the tooling required to accomplish this operation, cause it isn't quite as easy as it sounds. I am sure I'm missing something in machining linings to fit. By the way what prices are we talking about, I am sure someone has a lathe or milling machine large enough to bore the complete wheel without tearing it down & relacing & truing (watch the offset) costs ect. Guess I'll just go with bad chrome & alloy plus LH brake or Alpina wheel & rod brake. 1
Report Bultaco Re Liner in Bultaco Posted March 26, 2015 Cant help but wonder just how much the hub would really wear when only using the bike for trials.
Report Chispa in Bultaco Posted March 24, 2015 Just a question for my own curiosity, did they run the kick shaft & shifter thru from the original design? By the length of the kicker & the foot peg, one would think care would be advised. Only have pictures to look at. Thanks
Report Chispa in Bultaco Posted March 21, 2015 Spoke to my Bultaco parts guy and he informed me parts are about non existant, He also said the motor was not a Bultaco of any sort, it was a moped motor and subject to the transmission & the bottom of the case breaking if you tried to kick start the thing. I was advised to stay far away. Sorry to throw water on your plans. Might put it together & admire it as they must be pretty rare. May hap someone knows more & can help. Larry
