  1. I know I'm just starting out in this trials game (and assuredly don't ride/practice as much as I should or could) but wow, I've got a long way to go before my riding skills don't mask, or I can feel, the difference of 1 psi
  2. Just a thought, an enduro friend uses mousse in his wheels, are there mousses designed for trials application?
  3. Hello timp, I am very new to this game - probably less than 10 hours of riding - so interested in why 7 psi is useless. I've referred to the owner's manual for recommended tyre pressures, am I right in thinking you consider them too high?
  4. As is said "Ignorance is bliss". I bought IRC tube front, tubeless rear without knowing about this problem. Fortunately on my Scorpa SY250 it hasn't been a problem, but then I use 0.4bar front and 0.5bar (about 7psi) rear. I don't know if this is relevant... the rims, when I took off the old tyres, were so heavily corroded I had to use a combination of wire brush on a drill and a power file to remove it. Maybe this attention to the surface condition of the rim is contributory?
  5. Too nice to use and abuse?
  6. (25) Years ago on a Suzuki LT250R I used an 'of the day' chain wax - dirt stuck to it and formed a grinding paste! I think all chain lubes are a compromise between lubrication and dirt retention. There's not many people who disagree that a Scottoiler is good on road bikes; for me it is it a 'no-brainer' fitment. So, when I bought a trials bike and thought about chain lube I went straight for the blue scottoil oil. But as the typical trials bike usage is only a few miles (OK not SSDT) at very low speed, I might give a dry lube a try - just as long as water doesn't wash it off.
  7. Three years! I'm not normally that indecisive, but I've finally taken the plunge. I now have a 2005 Scorpa SY 250 - from Highland Leisure, thank you b40rt and to Garry at Highland Leisure. Have been using it in the garden and watching a few YouTube videos on basic riding skills. Compared to road bikes, the Scorpa makes low speed maneuvers easier, it is most definitely NOT easy though. Will be taking a few pointers from a trials & enduro riding friend and also go along to the Bon Accord Motorcycle Club's Trials practice evening. One 'alien' bit is cornering, on a road bike you dip the inside shoulder into the bend! Hope I don't forget which bike I'm on. Thanks for the encouragement and advice.
  8. Thank you. When you don't know these things, and only having road bikes to compare against, it was little worrying.
  9. Does anyone have experience / opinion on the HEBO TECH EVO BOOTS Thanks
  10. New to trials, new to trials bikes, new to sprung loaded chain tensioners. With the bike on a stand, rear wheel off the ground, 1st gear engaged and engine ticking over (to lube the chain) I noticed, what to me, seems like too much up-down movement of the sprung loaded chain tensioner. Should it jump up and down wildly like a 70's head banger's head? If not, how do I stop it? The chain is well lubed and without any apparent tight spots. New spring? new pad? new chain? or is it something to do with engine pulses? Appreciate your opinions / help. Regards Oh, the bike is an SY250 2T
  11. Thanks for quick reply. Could be, but as I said, I new to this and don't have a scooby. It looks just like a valve stem (diameter, threaded) but about 25mm long and without a valve cap. It diametrically opposite the valve stem. I know a pic would be obvious, but I don't have the bike in my possession yet
  12. I want some touch-up paint (that is not a sexual act for those outside the UK!!!) and I would like to know what is the nearest car colour I can buy from the local accessory shop. Thanks
  13. Obviously not, but what is the second one? Just bought a 2005 SY250. Never had a trials bike before so If a search doesn't reveal an answer I apologise in advance for what might seem obvious to the more experienced.
  14. Thanks guys. Yes, that is the Sherco - I didn't buy it. Nice, genuine fella, but the bike was a little to 'used' for me. Although I doubt any trials bike, by definition of the sport, stays unknocked for long. The classic trials (youtube) seem about the right difficulty to start with. Just the club up here is oriented to the more usual trials, so not sure how much chance I'd get to use in it. Like the idea of tinkering, but also aware that can lead to a constant drip of money. Don't know anyone who has a good knowledge of trials bikes to tag along. Oh, what to do? Up to me to decide. Next time, I'll be telling what I bought. Steve
  15. thedbf, I live 30 miles north of Aberdeen. I'd be interested if you have any leads. I'm going to see a 2004 Sherco 290 tomorrow in Peterhead.r Regards
  16. Well, nearly a year since I joined the forum and the surge of chatter in Feb. Since then I've been to another trial and participated as an observer. Yes, I was enthused having got more involved in the event than I did as a spectator. Trying to find a good bike at a price I can afford. Having spent time talking to the owners of the various bikes I'm even more confused, not one of them 'pushing' a particular bike. One thing coming through though is that the gasgas 280 and the sherco 290 may be a bit of a handle for a novice. There's not a lot of bikes available up in NE Scotland and the cost of fuel can add £100 + to the price unless you buy it in good faith (or stupidity as I'm sure some will say).
  17. A good morning watching others. Friendly people and intersting advice and help. But a bit scary, maybe due to advancing years but I saw so many potentials to fall off and down rocky hillsides. I don't bounce too well and I don't want to start breaking bones. Ladies and Gents, enjoy your sport.
  18. I appreciate there will be Scorpa fans and there will be Beta fans. But I'm completely new to trials and therefore ignorant about the different makes or models - this makes me uneasy. Any information about the bikes - bike parts, engine, gearbox, ease of use, reliability, finish, availability and cost of spares, common faults, ability to survive crashes - would help me get more comfortable. Thank you in advance. Steve
  19. Haha, this sounds good fun! So there's as much going on off the bikes as on the sections. Good job I refreshed my First-aid training recently. Are there any other 'sensitivities' I should be aware of so I don't innocently p***-off people before I get to know the cliques?
  20. Thanks for the advice. Stork955, you may be right, but I don't want my intro bike to trialing being a nightmare and turning me off. betarick, thank you, may well have saved me from a lot of pain and frustration. I'll look for something else that will painlessly introduce me to trialing.
  21. Theres an opportunity to buy a techno 250, with leaking crankseal. How big a job for someone pretty competent mechanically but new to 2t mo'bike engines? Walk away? or buy cheaply?
  22. Trials looks like something I might like - coming from car trials and comp safari. Never been to an event, seen the indoor events on tv, local club has outdoor trial on the 12th Feb. Don't know which bike is easiest for a fat, old, never done it before newcomer to start with. Any suggestions? (yeah, loose weight, haha)
