  1. My neighbour just acquired a tool for making strong and neat repairs to cracked plastic parts. He bought it primarily for plant / machine repair work, but he tried it out on an old/spare cracked beta mudguard I had in the garage and I was amazed at the quality and strength of the repair, especially considering the difficult location of the crack - see pic. He says he is open to taking on other motorbike parts repair jobs for a reasonable fee. He lives near Richmond, North Yorks, but parts could probably be handled by post. I said I would mention this on the trials central forum as it might be useful to folk who have cracked a mudguard or other plastic part, where the replacement cost is high. Some mudguards are fairly cheap (until you have to buy a decal set, etc.) Then there are expensive ones like replacing a TYZ mudguard can be eye-watering! If you are interested - pm me.
  2. Just to close this out...I got the Beta upgrade/update kit from Haven and used the 08> kickstart Lampkins sent me. Made it thru the Reeth 3day and still good several months on! Have to say it was a bit nerve wracking opening the gearbox to replace the kickstart shaft the night before the Reeth 3day started but I got it done ok. It was good to see inside and see how well engineered this engine is (apart from the cock-up with the early kickstart obviously!)
  3. I had this problem and looked at a few options. I tried plain old waterproof overtrousers for walking and and then for one ride borrowed some heavier farmers-merchants waterproofs, but both I found got me too hot and sweaty. I then looked at the army surplus Gortex/breathable stuff, but instead went for the £100 Clice 6day trials pants. These did what I wanted for a couple of outings in the cold/wet but quickly prooved to be completely inadequate in terms of build quality and too hot for warmer weather. Poppers falling off and stiching coming undone. So waste of money IMO. There's got to be a better solution for us triallers! For the next cold/wet season, I'll be looking to get some gortex army surplus gear. Im hoping it'll be functional and tough. Not a lot to ask, right?
  4. Got a guy from work to do me a repair job last night. He brought it in today for me. He's done some drilling and threading to get a high tensile bolt to join the broken bit back on. Got it on tonight and got a few starts out of it before it started to come apart :-( Thinks I got a fall back plan though. Haven Trials (Hull) have got one of the kits in stock but minus a kickstart and minus a rather essential washer for the bolt that goes into the splined shaft.. Anyone able to take their 4T's kickstart and measure up that washer for me? You will see it bears onto a very small machined ring/area of the kickstart, so I think critical to get the right size.
  5. Trying again with the pics. Note the close up of the base.... see how previous owner of bike grafted in a collet to make the kickstart lever sit a little further outboard and thus get round the problem of the old/bad design fouling the frame. I would do the same again myself, but the old parts are no longer available!!!
  6. I'm in for the Reeth 3day trial starting next Fri (19th) and this Sun the kickstart snapped on my bike (2008 Rev4T). I called Lampkins on Monday and they sent a new lever+joint part, arrived Tues, offered it up last night and doesn't fit! Called Lampkins today and they conclude I must have an 'early 08' which has a bad/obsolete design of kickstart (lots of forum posts relating to the probs with this older design.) The newer lever they sent is not compatible with the older shaft on my bike and I'm told the only way forward is to buy a kit (lever + shaft) which upgrades my bike to the later spec. Problem is they don't have a kit in stock (nor the shaft on its own.) Need to be ordered from Italy and they say would not get to me until Fri next week, which is going to be too late! Or I can pay a fortune for a one-off shipment - est. £50, which would bring the bill to an eye-watering £200; just too much to take right now! Does anyone have any better ideas? I've tried BVM. Incase you're wondering...the broken bits are quite beyond repair. See attached pic - i.e. snapped at base of 'stub'
  7. Just acquired a beta 250 rev 4t 2008. All good apart from poor running on full throttle mid speed....does what id call 'baulking', i think going too lean. Feels fine off idle when just hopping around. Tried adjustments to the air screw and mixture screw with no success and only managed to make the engine speed occasionally stay high on drop to idle.... this along with the bike's lack of use made me think the carb might be gummed up.... With the carb out (ball ache to remove), all looked very clean inside and out but i went to town with the carb cleaner anyway. The mixture screw had been replaced with a red Jitsie one. Whilst pulling this out a tiny disintegrated o ring appeared from nowhere. I couldnt see how it fitted and it was too damaged to refit anyway. Wanting to get out on the bike that avo, i decided to go ahead without it. Result was even worse running, which was overcome by taking the mixture screw quite far out and this gave a reasonable afternoons running. Can anyone confirm that o ring came from the mixture screw and how to get a replacement? Any other tips for sure fire success with this carb? Ive read all sorts of ideas. Hoping for the definitive step by step guide to 4stroke sweetness!
  8. After just having my 2006 Sherco 290 nicked, thinking about getting a replacment bike. I say thinking because I just can't bare the thought of loosing another £1000-1500. (And I know they'll be back.) So I reckon insurance is the only way forward. Anyone got any advice? I know Carole Nash do a theft only policy for off-road bikes and had a quote for a shade over £100, which seems ok. I may end up wanting to do one of the big trials for which I hear its best to have a road-reg bike. I assume this means it needs to be taxed too and I assume proper road bike insurance will be needed to get it taxed; so wondering if a normal motorbike policy would be better. Only prob I see with that is I don't have a motorcycle entitlement on my drivers licence (just car and truck), so dont see how anyone would insure me. Anyone got any ideas? Regards, Dan
  9. Cant see anythijng on there now. You didn't happen to note down the number did you? Was it specifically listing a Sherco 290, 2006?
  10. Started trialing 4 months ago with a 2006 Sherco 290 I bought off a mate. Having a great time with it all, but slow learning curve. Struggling to put front wheel up where I want it and getting stuck on slippy steps in gills, etc. Then I got on at mate's 2002(?) Sherco 250 and WOW I'm suddenly able to float the front wheel in the air and do stuff I'm struggling with on mine. I just feel at home on it right away, every time. I put a new clutch lever on mine (bush a bit worn) and made some tweaks and it is behaving a bit better, but still cant ride it in the controlled way I can the 250. I'm wondering if its down to the way the power is delivered on the 290 - maybe the 250 is more controllable or linear on the throttle. Its hard to put a finger on what the difference is. Anyhow, anyone got any thoughts on what the differences are and mods I could make to my 290 to make it feel better. It has a tiny dent in the exh dowpipe - thinking that could affect linearity of the power delivery a bit? Dan
