All  good points BUT  as you point out things change well the trials concept can not or it will cease to be trials.  you  ride between 2 sets of flags loosing marks along the way or not  ! you point out Pre 65 do they still not ride between 2 sets of flags still trials. But  ride between 2 sets of flags no observer it becomes enduro or moto cross, Rules are in place but this is part of the problem  with WTC & BTC  riders going watching know the rules but not seeing them being implemented !  the young riders  copy/ ride like there heros at club level sulk when they get a 5 for doing the same thing !, We All seem to worry about the wrong things in trials  cash/sponsorship ,getting young riders into the sport  BUT what need to really  worry about are  Officials to run clubs ,observe take ,entrys  put flags in etc all volunteers( amature ) ,   BUT what do we have 6 pages of lack of sponsorship /cash to keep rides in WTC /BTC   prioritys need to change  !

The problem with the lack of officials may well be pre65 / twinshock which has extended the riding career of riders into their late 60s. At what point have they had their turn and will stop riding in order to observe ? At one point people who stopped riding then contributed to the sport but not now.

As for the number of pages if we remove your ongoing  debate with dabster that will half the thread length will it not ?

  2. Skiers in the states tried to get the snowboard banned when was first invented. It appears more popular with younger people than skis. Snowboard parks are now common in ski resorts and are far removed from the original concept of who could ski down a hill the quickest.

Now people use skis in the snowboard parks.

You may not be sure change is the answer but the status quo isn't working in terms of young riders or sales for manufacturers. Football and F1 continually  change their rules. I would argue the original concept of reliability trials was just to see if the bike got round the course. Sections as we know them were not the original concept.

No minority group insists on playing with a 1960s ball or boots. Nobody turns up at an F1 track in a 1980 ferrari and then asks for the rules to be reversed back to how they were when the car was competitive.

As a minority sport setting off in different directions has been a mistake. The original concept of pre 65 being cheaper is long gone and people now invest modern bike sums in bikes made by factories that no longer exist.

Our splinter groups need to reform back into a single group with an acceptance of others under a ser of rules that can be reliably observed with sections to suit. So not no stop with turns you can't get round for example.

  3. We know who likes twin shock and no stop.

We know who likes modern bikes and long distance trials

We know who likes stop permitted.

Because we are all guilty of re stating the same beliefs over and over again. Its been going on within these forums for years and we are no further forward.

Given the choice would you rather trials ceased as a sport than accept a set of rules which are not your preference?

I only ask as while we continue to debate, with conviction that we are correct, the average age of a trials rider in the UK increases year by year. When the average age of the rider is 60 who is going to observe, who is going to set out events.

Ok some dont like btc / wtc I get that and in terms of section quality I tend to agree the world rounds could be better. But we need to change our sport into something that appeals to more young people or it dies with us.

Skate parks are full of kids on scooters, bmx bikes skate boards etc doing tricks. Imagine walking up to them and pointing out a momentary stop....People have changed,  young people are not attracted to strict application of rules. Something like the points system at Cahors may appeal to them ? A different branch of the sport but if they bought bikes and kit that would be a success.

Move on from the petty squabbling,  its not getting "us" as in trials anywhere.

  4. Yes it would be too expensive and the world championship isn't sustainable without that additional spend.

We have the same problems throughout the sport though. We require rules that reflect how people actually ride and are simple to apply.

Before people post that non stop is simple to apply it clearly isn't with modern bikes and people setting out who don't know what a no stop section looks like. New rules need to appeal to young riders most of us riding now are 40/50/60.

  5. I listened to Cabestany on the trials Australia podcast the other day who commented on the world scene from a top riders point of view. Trials outdoors is awkward really , conditions change and observers get influenced by the pressure of observing top riders. Cabestany made the point that a 2 second pause is a clean in one section but can be a five in the next. Very frustrating if its your living on the line.

He preferred indoors as sections didn't really change rider to rider and the same observer was on all sections.

Then he mentioned the strict time tables of when you can look at sections when you can practice etc. He didn't make it seem like fun.

He maybe answered my question on why hard enduro appeals. Ride all day and no observers. Simple rules and not subjective, plus you get paid a lot more.

Trials needs to sort itself out, we've been going round the rules loop for years and are no further forward.

  6. Cabestany not riding trial E next year. Trials is hitting the buffers,  I dont understand the fascination with hard enduro which just looks like the Scott trial on the wrong bike ? But people are getting paid to do it, ex trials riders do very well.

Last year I rode a downhill mtb for a day in andorra,  brilliant day out, very popular but not cheaper ?

You need a certain number of people to make a sport viable, we no longer have enough people buying modern bikes for the world championship to be viable. If the wtc stops what happens ?

  7. Lots of modern bikes have problems with plastic tanks expanding due to the petrol. My 2014 gas gas tank swelled and in the end had to be replaced. Took a couple of years mind.

My 2017 trs is still on the original tank but I think its swelled a little. I always use super unleaded which I believe has less ethanol. Manufacturers will need to go back to ally tanks I think

  8. Its impossible really to succeed unless a private sponsor is paying or you have wealthy parents. Practice isn't just the rider, its rider plus minder. Repair bills when things go wrong must be horrendous.

So to practice like Bou, Raga etc you probably need to be able to fund a full time rider and a minder, two bikes a year minimum plus parts, a van etc.

That level of spend needs to be maintained until the rider is picked up by a factory. I would think the majority of the factory budget probably goes on the top 5/6 riders?

Then most of the money in the sport is going on pre 65 and twinshock bikes. So factories have much less to spend on a world championship,  in fact two world championships including x trial.

All this before you take into account that there is no agreement on which rules to apply

  9. 3.There's no head gasket they have o rings. You could fit an extra base gasket, this does affect port timing but still works and is common mod on lots of bikes to soften the power.

Frame I think is the same but you could check with trs UK?

Amped decals I've used before on a gas gas, no problems.

If its an rr then you can adjust the damping, both compression and rebound, have you done this ? If not use the adjustment and stay on std oil. ?

In desperation, I've purchased one of the cheap Chinese copies of the PHBG, the black 'racing' version (approx £40). It can't possible be worse and, you never know...I'll post back with how it goes.

Right, I finally remembered to get the jet sizes and slide from the improved carb.

    Pilot 40

    Main 92

    Slide 40

    Needle w7, lowest groove.

  11. If you ride in first and its too quick fit a 9 tooth otherwise just select a lower gear. My 280 will pull 4th on a hill but its not detuned so 4th is usable.

Low comp head and a head spacer may be too soft as the motor won't have the compression to pull higher gears

I rode my mates sherco 300 factory last week it was like getting on a mountain bike compared I was shocked by the difference it’s more than any 10kg

I've always thought either all the 2t manufacturers cant operate scales or montesa cant. They both cannot be right ? However I was talking to a guy in Italy a few years ago who pointed out a couple of things.

The weight biasis on the mont is something like 70% front 30% rear which makes it feel a lot heavier.

The manufacturers also quote dry weight, the 2t bikes hold less than 500ml of oil , the 4t has more like 1.5 litre ?

Finally the moving parts issue which makes a 300 2t feel heavier than a 125 may also come into play when you think about timing chains , valves etc and the 4t motor must be more top heavy.

    I'm a 2 stroke man, I don't want to write off 6 months learning to ride a 4t, I haven't got long left as it is ?

  13. Thanks guys. Wire coil is 4.7mm thick. These forks only have the spring in one side so ive found some springs on line from an earlier set of 38mm which had a spring in both sides so I'll try one of them,  length is within adjustment range on the fork and wire coil is 4mm

My son only weighs 37kg but these forks are firmer than the tech forks in my TRS
