  1. Got the engine back now , it didn't need little end or piston rings , apparently everything was alright except for the mains ( it was once described by a friend of mine as sounding lika a cement mixer ! ) . So it's now ' nailed ' together and just been started on the second kick , sounds like new . So i am going to take it out this weekend for a shakedown test just to make sure everything is right .

Would it be better to slightly increase the amount of two stroke oil for the first mix for a running in period or not ?

  2. Thanks very much for your imput . You have all probably endorsed what I was thinking myself , so it's out with the motor and off it goes ! Will probably change little end and piston rings at the same time .

    Thanks Again

    Phil

  3. I have now come round to the idea that my 250 sherco ( 01 vintage ) now needs the main bearings changed. My question is this , can the bearings be changed without splitting the engine or does it have to be 'split apart ' . I have asked my local dealer about a price to do the job and he says if I take the motor out of the frame and deliver it to him he will do for about

  4. Ummm... I cant quite tell if your joking?

The tank, unlike the airbox is a sealed unit with no need for big openings to let air/water/mud in.

I like the bike, may be tempted with one... wonder what colour those wheels will be? DID rims maybe? There must be something special for them to be blanked out. The airbox-carb-engine setup's gonna be odd aswell, as the flow will be vertical, not horizontal?

I think I got you hook, line and sinker. Just my warped sense of humour I'm afraid !

  5. if it's any help, i've never been to any trial where if you have any problems , just ask the guy stood next to you at the section . I would be very surprised if he wouldn't give you any help when asked . I remember my first trial after a break of about thirty years , great fun , should have done it years ago , just take your time and ask if not sure and i'll bet you'll be back for more next week !

  6. Next time it plays up , try taking off the petrol cap and see if that makes a difference . I had a similar problem and it turned out to be the overflow pipe being blocked and not letting air in when the tank was emptying and creating a vacuum in the tank thus causing all sorts of weird running issues !!!

  7. I was observing at a trial yesterday with three routes , beginner, novice and expert. A rider on a 70's TY 175 yamaha was riding the novice route and on my section got four 5 's even though he attacked it with vigour so to speak . After his last attempt , and the fourth time that I had helped him pull this really nice bike out of the stream , we chatted for a while and came to the conclusion that when his bike was manufactured , this section would easily have been a national class section and he couldn't have cleaned it then , so what chance would he have now !!!! The problem being was that the easy route , or beginners route , had been set for young kids on small wheel beta 's and so on and it was literally to easy but the next course was to hard, and I think it is a problem with a lot of trials that i have seen , but I don't want to criticise anybody because I do realise that marking a section out is very difficult and you will never please all of the people all of the time .

  8. I have taken off the rear shock absorber on my sons cabby '07 to grease the swing arm bearings and the linkage bearings as well. I cannot remember which way round the rear shock should be ie. the spring at the top or bottom . could somebody please check another cabby if possible and advise please ? In the parts manual it shows it with the spring at the top but the shocker has marks on it where i think it has caught on something that would suggest the spring at the bottom. Any help would be appreciated , this is driving me crackers !!!!!!!!!

    thanks

    Phil

  9. My sons 290 cabby has a problem of flooding it's keihin carb through the overflow. Apparently these carbs have a problem doing this so i've changed the spring loaded needle valve without any success .So my question is this ,can anybody tell me the settings for the floats, where it is measured from and please, if possible, with pictures or a link to a website that does have pictures ? ( Other than that this bike is awesome ! )

    Thanks In Anticipation

    Phil

  10. Thanks for the advice ,i think i'll try it at 5/8 of a turn and see what happens. Also I wasn't trying to tune it anyway special but i took the carb off and stripped it down to clean and realised i'd forgotten to note the air screw settings ,but I reckon i always learn by stupid mistakes !!!!

  11. I know this a long shot but a fella i know had a similar problem on a 2004 290 sherco.

when he bought the bike he was assured no major work had been done to it, he also couldn't get it to run right . Tried everything to do with the carb , ignition timing etc but with no joy. So after about 12 months of head scratching he decided to give the previous owner a call and after much discusion it appeared the previous owner had replaced the main bearings and it had never run right ever since and that was the reason why he had sold it.

So my friend decided to check the said mains and on the strip down he found the piston had been put in the WRONG WAY ROUND. Needless to say this was corrected and it now runs a sweet as a nut .

So it may be worth having a word with your previous owner , he may know what is wrong but is to embarrased to say !

  12. Hiya,

I keep hearing good reports about practicing at addingham moorside and wouldn't mind trying myself.

So would it be possible for anybody to give me detailed directions so I can find it please

    Thanks

    Phil

P.S. I'll be coming from the Bury area

  13. Well i've taken the plunge and gone and bought myself a 250 sherco and suddenly all those memories have flashed across my brain about dragging bikes out of streams and bruising my ribs on rocks and so on from around thirty years ago that i am now feeling quite apprehensive.

Ah well nevermind you only live once!!!!!!:thumbup::wub:
