  2. Could any Rev 3 owner do me a favour and have a look at the cylinder head gasket on their bike. There is a small tab sticking out of the gasket, about 2mm square. Where is it on your bike?. Is it at the front, back , side?. I'm rebuilding my top end, tried phoning a couple of dealers but they're on holiday.

    Any help greatly appreciated,

  3. I road reg'd a Pinky TY 4 years ago with a dating letter from Yam UK with exactly the same disclaimer on it. Had to take it to the local DVLA office for inspection. I think the fact that it is MOT'd means that as far as the DVLA are concerned, the MOT tester is saying that it's in road legal trim (I did mine with a 'daytime only' MOT, no lights fitted).

    As far as the modern bikes go, they must meet the Construction & Use regs, otherwise they wouldn't have the form (V55/5?) issued with them when they are sold to enable them to be reg'd / taxed. I got a modern road reg'd 2 years ago, they had a look at it, checked the no's etc, no mention of lights or no. plate brackets.

    Maybe up in trials country they are more savvy when it comes to such things. Been wondering for a while when the Plod would start kicking off about visible no.plates at the Scottish, it's bound to happen sooner or later.

  4. I have a UK Motorcycle insurance policy with Carole Nash. Trials are not specifically excluded, only 'off road riding'. I e-mailed them to ask if I would be covered riding on the road between observed sections at an ACU club organised event, including 'green lanes' where the bike must be road legal. I have a message on my phone saying that I am covered on the road between sections at an Observed Trial, "as long as its not a race or anything", but not off road, green lanes etc.

    I am going to phone them back and argue that any green lane that your bike needs to be road legal for must be a road of some description. Also, does having a time allowance make it a race?. I'll update later.

  5. 1.5% synthetic 2T, no bowl extender, standard jetting for 200cc '02 Rev-3 (don't have the figures to hand as I'm at work for next 10 days), after lowering float level the low down power from the engine was worse, struggling in 2nd on hills once the revs dropped, weather normal for Scotland. Was definately worse with the lower float level mod.

    I reset the float and got the carb modded by Beta UK (they redrill the overflow to a higher position in the carb). That stopped the dribbling.

    The bike has never been great at pulling from low revs.

    I recently reset the ignition timing (not touched since new) using data from the factory book by marking the flywheel at TDC, and setting the timing at tickover to 1.6mm BTDC, checking with a strobe light. This has definately improved the low down pull. It was too far retarded.

    Bike still knocks a bit on closing the throttle. Need to check the carb inlet rubber again. Using super unleaded, 98 octane. Knocks really bad with normal 95RON fuel.

  6. Thanks for that Billy, I believe the mod may have been to help when doing big splatters as well as hill climbs, so option 1 seems realistic.

    As to my own bike feeling sluggish after lowering the float as per your mod, would this not make the mixture leaner due to the lower level of fuel in the bowl than previously ?.

    Are you saying the mixture would be richer because of the increased vacuum required to lift the fuel, the higher vacuum being brought about by a smaller throttle opening, therefore less air for the same amount of fuel?.

  7. Woody, saw the very same thing on a few bikes at this years SSDT.

    There's a 1/2 litre version which is actually a drinks container, or you can get a Hebo fuel version, 1.2ltr, from the Lewisport USA web site for $75.

    They have an air vent and a siphon pipe on them, you connect the siphon pipe to the normal fuel tank vent, as fuel is used up it's drawn from the auxiliary tank into the normal tank, the air coming in at the auxy tank atmospheric vent.

I suspect that the method of getting the fuel into the frame space would be to fit a tee piece between the fuel tank and petrol tap then connect the tee to the connection at the bottom of the spars. That way the level would equalise with the fuel tank level, but it would take a while to fully fuel up, depanding on the bore of the cross connections.

    The reason I ask is I thought it would make a good trail bike with a bit more fuel capacity.

  9. Clark, am I right in saying that you are connecting the 2 atmospheric vents at the either side on the top part of the carb together, or one atmos. vent to the overflow outlet on the bottom of the float bowl?. Not too clear from the picture.

    I had my carb modded by Beta UK which moves the internal overflow height up. It doesn't dribble from anywhere now, but if you park it facing downhill it floods if the petrol is not shut off. In other words, instead of leaking from the overflow, which is now higher, it dribbles into the crankcase.

    I tried Billys float level mods but felt it made the bike a bit gutless (it's a 200cc).

    One for Billy T: Could you explain the theory behind this carb mod on the BVM web site?. All I can see is that it increases the volume of the float bowl, but its not going to increase the amount of fuel available to the main jet, unless the jet itself is lowered. Unless the original plug is so close to the MJ that it restricts the fuel, but I doubt it. They say it helps on hill climbs.

  10. Stu, if its pushing out just behind and above the kickstart, that happened to quite a few riders at this years Scottish. The only way that can happen is if the gearbox is pressurising. I suspect at the SSDT the engines were getting so hot either any water in the oil was boiling, the oil itself was boiling, or the gearbox breather tube was blocked or restricted in some way. I spoke to a guy who had even removed the right angled vent connection and drilled it out a bit but the same had happened again.

  11. Thanks for that Woody, I feel that when I ride my mates one, there is none of the snatch/jerkiness that I get off my own 200ccRev-3 when cracking the throttle on from zero in a section.

    As you seem to know your TYZ's, any ideas on increasing fuel capacity?. Someone suggested to me that you can tap into the 2 top frame spars and use them, ever heard of that one?. Ever run out of fuel at the Scottish?.

  12. Can anyone tell me which are the better TYZ's?. My mate has a '96 purple wheeler which is really soft on the power and so grips like hell. I was talking to someone who has had a few and reckons the later ones have more aggressive engines so break traction more easily. Also, what is the Scorpa engine like compared to the TYZ's?.

    I fancy something with a bulletproof reputation.

  13. Check the carb is not overflowing, Rev-3's are notorious for this. You can change the float height as per Billy Traynors post (on this BB somewhere), or send the carb to John Lampkin who will mod it (basically move the internal overflow higher up) for

  14. Great trial, definately one to go back to. Steep slippy climb up to the first section, steep drop down the gully to the last one. All the sections on the easy route were straightforward. Thanks to everyone at the Club for a great days sport, the bike didn't know what hit it!.

  15. Guy, did you pick up that injury at the quarry?. I think the last time I saw you was about a year ago at the Bathgate trial just after you had the bike nicked.
