  1. I was also going to mention that Graham has a little loop welded to his brake pedal that faces the rear that makes it easier to reach the pedal.

I have used a large punch to dent the front of mine so that it does not return all the way forward. It makes it easier for me to reach the pedal.

  2. I has the opportunity to discuss the new Sherco 4 stroke with Andreu Codina at the dealer show in Indianapolis last February, he was very excited about it's performance. He said that it actually performed better than the current 2 Stroke. The 4 Stroke adds around 5 lbs to the weight and a good bit of the weight is up higher. He mentioned that this took a little getting used to. But he is very happy with the performance. I would gues the overall dry weight to be 158 - 160 lbs. (72.5 Kg)

  3. Al,

Lane Leavitt took a broken black clutch lever and added a gob (carefully shaped) of epoxy to the end of it and Debbie was able to pull it in all the way to the bar with one finger, actually pretty trick. If you do not understand I know Lane would send you a picture.

  5. I have not had any problem rotating the carb enough to allow the choke to clear the fuel tap. It is very close but it has not proven to be a problem and I have installed the Keihin on several bikes.

I use the original throttle tube off of the stock carb on the new one and grind a bit off of it to make the cable work.

  6. Graham and Sam Connor are both running the Keihin on their bikes at Duluth. Sam's carb and jets were confiscated at the Detroit airport, Sam is using David Chaves carb for the event. The Detroit lost and found have found Sam's carb and parts and have sent them to RYP.

  7. MC,

Take a look at this manual, it does provide compete instructions on how to change to fork oil, with the amount to add when refilling and when starting with a completely clean system. We recommend the Maxima 5 or 10 wt oil, depending on your riding style and weight. (pages 13 - 17)

If I get a chance I will try to measure the oil on a new bike either at CO. or the World Round.

  8. I hope they can keep it up. Graham won in 99 on the then new Bultaco by Sherco, Jon Pons won last year. I would be great to see them stay 1, 2 3.

I counted the bikes by brand and came up with these figures.

    Beta 65

    Sherco 60

    Gas Gas 59

    Montesa 51

    Scorpa 21

    Yamaha 6

    Aprilla 1

    Fantic 1

There were 16 riders who did not state what brand bike they were riding.

It will be interesting to see how many of each brand are able to finish.

  9. Ishy, thanks for the post, I used to wash my bike and then immediately start it up until David Chaves told me not to. I removed the fender and was amazed at the amount of water under it. I have never gotten water in the air box while riding but there is something about using a hose that allows water to get under the fender. I seem to get more water in there using the garden hose. The pressure washer doesn't get as much water under the fender.

I don't like taking the airbox out so I remove the fender before I wash the bike and put a piece of duct tape over the air inlet, I also put a shop towel over that, I then reinstall the fender and wash the bike. Water does not get into the airbox.

I think that if Marky G will agree the only time he got water in his airbox was during the washing process.

NEVER START THE BIKE IMMEDIATELY AFTER WASHING WITHOUT MAKING SURE THERE IS NO WATER IN THE AIRBOX.

  10. You can download a full set of Sherco manuals from the RYP website. The site is www.rypusa.com. Click on Sherco, then Service Manuals, the best way to download them is to right click on the manual you want and then select "save target as". I would suggest that you download the "Setup and lubricatioin guide".

    Transmission fluid Maxima MTL 75wt - 450cc.

Fork oil 4 weight 330 cc for a rebuild aroung 270 -300 for an oil change.

Fil the radiator so that the tubes are covered, you should have room for expansion.

In the US we use at least 93 octane fuel, 80:1 oil / gas, Maxima K2 synthetic.

If you have any questions you can email me off the list.

    Wayne

  11. In the US we recommend 80:1 oil gas mixture, this is the mix that is used in all of the Sherco Team bikes at the nationals. I have used this mix for years with no problems. Maybe there is a difference in our gas/oil, we use Maxima K2 synthetic.

The Sherco muffler is not repackable without cutting it completely apart and rewelding it. I know of a guy who did, he is an excellent welder and had no problem.

He had crashed and bent the muffler so he was experimenting to see if he could salvage it

  12. You say that it is being "Burnt Out". Am I to understand that it is plugged with oil residue? What gas / oil mixture are you using? Does the bike ever get thoroughly cleaned out? I ocassionally run mine up the road to burn out all of the oil residue.

  13. If you are really dissatisfied with the silencer why don't you discuss the situation with your dealer / importer? I am confident that a situation like you have would be resolved here in the US by the importer. I would think that your importer would want to keep you happy. If the silencer is going to disqualify your son from an event I would think that they would want to resolve it to your satisfaction.

  14. Having raised 7 kids, 4 girls and 3 boys, and having coached them in softball and basketball I can hopefully offer some suggestions. Two of my boys also ride trials with me. They have both attended a Ryan Young trining school. Ryan used to conduct one on one schools, I do not know if he does this anymore, I gave my youngest son a "Day with Ryan" for his 17th birthday and it really improved his riding skills.

    1. Always be positive. Praise will accomplish much more than destructive criticism.

    2. Consider taking him to a school, sometimes our kids / grandkids can learn much more from others than they can from us.

    3. Consider buying him a good training video DVD as a gift. I am partial to the on that Ryan Young has. It starts out with the basics and moves on to the advanced techniques.

    4. As said by others keep it FUN, let him determine how long you ride / practice.

  15. As you put everything back together you may want to apply a leveral coating of a mixture that I have had success with. I mix up a batch of super gooey Maxima waterproof grease 2/3 and some good black anti seize 1/3. I liberally apply this to everyhing and have had very good success with bearing life.

  16. Marky,

It is very hard to play detective long distance but I believe that the water is getting into your filter/airbox while you are washing the bike.

I always find water under the fender after I wash my bike, especially when it is really muddy. The solution is to remove the rear fender before I was the bike and cover the airbox. I wipe the top of the filter retainer off with a some contact cleaner and then apply a piece of duct tape to the retainer, effectively sealing the airbox intake. I even place an oil soaked rag over the top of the airbox and reinstall the rear fender.

Since I have been doing this I have never found water in my filter / airbox. David Chaves of Team Sherco scolded me for starting my bike immediately after washing it because it is possible to get water in the air box during washing. David always takes his filter out and cleans it and the airbox after each washing. I dop not like to remove the air box so I protect it during the washing cycle. I really believe that is the source of you water infiltration. I do not think it is getting in while you ride the bike.

A good test would be to remve the reaf fender and check it out before you wash the bike.

  17. I have used the tapered bars for years, first on my 99 TXT270 and now on my Sherco. I used the same bars on the 99 then on the 02 and the 03, I still have them as spares, I put a new pair of TAG bars on my 04. I purchased the bars and clamps from ERE. I have a special triple clamp for my Sherco, it is a custom bracket that was deisgned for a GG. The 99 Sherco/Bultaco upper triple clamp will accept the clamps.

The tapered bars absorb shock which is easier on my old joints, they are also almost unbendable.

Fly racing sells a set of adapters that allow the use of the tpaered bars with the stock Sherco upper triple clamp www.flyracing.com.

  18. Marky G,

I would really like to understand how your are getting water in your airbox. Can you describe the conditions. What kind of terrain are you riding in.

Is the problem associated with riding the bike or is it when you wash the bike.

    Thanks,

    Wayne

  19. There are four ways that I know of to install the Tag or Hebo tapered bars on the Sherco.

    1. Buy a "99" top triple clamp, it fits the newer models, it still has the flat mounting area.

    2. Obtain a custom top triple clamp, I obtained one that was originally made for a GG, it fits my "04" perfectly.

    3. Purchase a set of adapters from Fly Racing, www.flyracing.com. The adapters raise the bars 3/4".

    4. Machine the stock triple clamp to receive the larger diameter bars. I did this to my "02". You have to use the upper handelbar clamp from the conversion kit.
