Just an update ; I've fitted Honda brake shoes to the rear. That's fixed that end. I've fitted Honda shoes on the front , almost. I'd rather not go any further than that, otherwise I might loose some Bultaco friends.

Thank you for everyone's comments. I have the backing plate away at the moment being sleeved. With over 2000 views I believe that maybe there are a few issues regarding the brakes that others would like to solve or see solved. Just on one note though- I think Ross (mrb505) has a valid point . Had I not bought the Honda I would have kept riding the bully with no concerns about the brakes.Anyone want a Honda? Thank you again for your input. Cheers brt650

Thank you David and Mark for your efforts so far. I'll wait if you don't mind David, till you have tried them on your backing plate. When you sit the shoes into the brake drum , can you measure the gap at the cam end please? When the shoes are butted together at the anchor end. Thanks again Cheers Brian

hello pschrauber, I don't doubt what you say , but I have a drum brake Honda and it;s very good. There are other's that would back me on that. And it's 110mm in diameter and the bully is 125mm. Doesn't make sense.I'm still going with David on this one and pursue the Fantic shoe/anchor design. I'll keep you posted.I think maybe the riding style in twinshock is different here to what they do in England. We don't have flowing as much , as stop and attack an obstacle. Much like modern style riding is.But a long way away from that.If you watch the guy's on Honda's at our club days at what they can do with there brakes that work. It would nearly make you think about changing brands. Heaven forbid. Thanks brt650

Hello David, That would be great if you could try those shoes to see if they closely fit the Bultaco backing plate. I don't mind buying a set .I can modify the anchor end if need be.Maybe you could ask Mark to service his brakes and while there apart, see how close a fit they are. Thanks Brian

The front brake first and then I'll get onto the rear. I did read David that you were considering the Fantic 240 shoes in a post from 2008. (http://www.trialscentral.com/forums/topic/17506-sherpa-t-brake-shoe-pivot-arrangement/ ) Did you end up trying that? I was considering the offset anchor end maybe causing some side effects. I made a ring 125mm round and fitted over the brake to see what was happening. The shoes under varying pressure move all over the place. I believe your comments from 2008 would help alleviate this. I have read some of the old posts about brakes and even contacted some of the members here on TT. But I haven't yet read were a Bultaco owner has brakes that work as efficiently as a Honda. I know that is upsetting , but come on how hard can it be? Bully brakes are 125mm and my Honda has 110mm. Is it purely the lining material? Is it design? Is it mechanical leverage? I have tried 1 Relining the brake drum 2 Bushing the cam pivot 3 Newfren shoes 4 Machining shoes to match drums 5 Centralising the backing plate when tensioning the axle 6 Venhill nylocable 7 Suzuki cam and 100mm brake arm Someone has the secret and I want it. Hello xtzoutback, Just wondering , you might have this listed on the wrong forum. I know Toyota make a hybrid. Maybe someone there might appreciate what you've done. I just can't get to liking the idea that you wrecked 2 good bikes. Have you ridden it yet? I'm sure if it is a winning combination , why the Honda engineers went to all that trouble to make the RTL frame.I bet they'll get a kick in the rear if they are still employed there for wasting all that time and effort. Hey xtzoutback, Don't want to be picky , but your thread say's successful fitment of RTL engine. If it was successful why can't you kick start it? Not wanting to finish there. But I would love to see an original RTL250 one day,let alone someone like you that strips one apart willy nilly. I guess your going to hack away a good TLR200 frame and destroy the original RTL muffler too? Have fun with that project. Cheers brt650 P.S. Hello Michael, Just measured my 159.I relaced my wheels with stainless spoke kits from Bultaco UK last year. From the very edge of the rim to the swing arm both sides is 37mm. The right rear spacer is 30 mm long. A centre line through the engine case's lines up with the centre of the tyre. By the way. Harley davidson motorcycles can have a offset of between 8 to 16mm from the centre line of the frame to the centre line of the wheels. I set my Harley at zero off set. Hello Bondy, The bike did turn out well.I've competed three times with it now and I find it great to ride. It's apart at the moment ,I'm changing to right side brake. Just can't get my head around it being left side brake. Also changing the crank. Fitting the correct one finally. Good luck with your bike.

Thanks for the kind comments. The bike come with the wrong tank and seat combination. Since I had to buy a new tank I thought I'd go the later style. Especially when a local Australian Trials champion had the tank made for me specifically. It's fibreglass and it has a linning/sealant inside it. Said Trials champion also painted the tank and air box for me too. Special thanks go to Greg for your help. If he could only guide me in the correct way to ride it that would finish it off completely. I purchased the bike Feb 09. It has taken a while , but I have 6 other bikes as well. Hello sunny, funny you mention the seat. It is aluminium base and home made cover. It was originally fitted to my riding mates 199. I told him it was the ugliest seat I had ever seen.
