Hi all

 

I'm trying to import my 2022 TXT 250 into the US, but i'm currently not with my bike to check the stickers.    Are there any 'competition only' or U.S emissions stickers on the bike?   If so, could any kind soul send me or post a photos of the stickers (or stamps) so I can check with US customs if i can import or not.

Rich, I have a 2023 TXT 250 and there are no stickers/stamps for competition or emissions on it. Usually, off road vehicles don’t have to meet these standards so I did a quick Google search to confirm. Below is what I found. Customs should obviously be aware of this already. Good luck!

“Generally, imported trials motorcycles do not need to meet US emissions standards, provided they are not motor vehicles as defined by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). NHTSA defines a motor vehicle as a vehicle manufactured primarily for public street, road, and highway use. Trials bikes, which are primarily used for off-road competition, typically fall outside this definition and are not subject to the same regulations as on-road vehicles.”

Thanks for the reply.  This is what I feared.   On the US side, the EPA want to see either EPA emissions labels or competition only labels.  Without them, i doubt I can import my bike.  Which sucks

Tires are stamped 'for off road use only'.

There must be a way to import it or your feds would never be able to collect the outrageous tariff that is unique to your country.

I don't think there is a feasible way, unless it goes through EPA testing etc etc, which obvisouly isn't going to happen nor would it pass.

I think you need to maintain that it is not intended to pass EPA road specs any more than a new chainsaw or lawnmower would pass road vehicle EPA rules.

Not sure it's that easy.  All engines need EPA approval (or EPA exemption) to come into the US it seems.    I asked EPA about it and they said it needs the competition only stamps/labels or US EPA emission ones to obtain the letter from them to allow the import. The competition only tags are for bikes not sold to the general public aw well, they told me!    GasGas sell the TXT in the US, but not sure what they are stickered with, if at all.   EPA will argue mine is a 'Canadian spec' or non-conforming.

If you live in California, it has its own bizarre laws for off road vehicle registration.  When shipping a bike within the US,  I have been told it can be much easier and less expensive to partially disassemble and ship as motorcycle parts.  Apparently, shipping regulations are different for parts vs entire motor vehicle.  Depending on the state, a Certificate of Origin should be adequate to get it titled in your state.

No, not Cali.  I think even if you bring/import an engine, its still open to EPA import regulations!

I've just been looking at random photos of my TXT 250, i noticed there is a yellow sticker on the headstock.... a bit of googling has brought me this image... i can see it says competition events only!

Does anyone else have this sticker on their bike that can send me or post a photo in this thread?!

If a trials bike is going to need to be emission spec where you ride I think you are looking at a Montesa or something electric.

Rich, I really need to apologize for saying there was no sticker on my bike. I just took a closer look and found it behind the light shroud. I’m sorry but I never noticed it before. Anyway, here it is. I hope this helps. Image obviously rotated 90°.

Thanks Ron! No need to apologise, all good! That's exactly what I needed to see.     Hopefully EPA will be able to accept the bike as a competition bike and allow me to import it.
