Twinshock

HI, I've just restored a Montesa cota 349 (White wonder model). Now I know they weren't the best handling bike but the MH349 was much better. Does any one know if the steering head angle was changed on the MH or was it just down to the banana swingarm? I know the MH had welded stuts on the frame as apposed to bolt on ones but I can't see why this would make any difference unless the engine had been moved to a different position. Thanks in advance.

I just saw a post in Montesa forum re: using ATF in a 315r and it reminded me to post my findings using ATF in my Cota 247. I had read in other forums 247 owners using ATF in both clutch and gearbox and so I gave it a try. First thing I noticed was the gears starting jumping ie: from one gear to another under power (usually 3rd and 4th ) and it was very difficult to select neutral once warm. I have no gasket for clutch cover so have been using silicon successfully in the past but this time it failed and so I had to redo and refill the clutch but I was out of ATF and so the original manual states SAE-10W30 but in the past I used GTX (not GTX2). Interesting well over a …

Hi and seasons greetings to all. Does anyone have any opinions as to whether Pirelli trials tyres are any good? I've recently bought a Ts with what look like new tyres on it, MT13 rear and MT43 front. I useually use IRC and the Pirelli's do feel a harder compound. Any thoughts? Cheers

Hi All I have a 75 Cota 247 which on the whole runs very well.but smokes excessively ( even for a 70's twostroke). I am thinking that it could be a crankshaft oil seal? The reason I think so is because when i remove the spark plug and smell it I can smell gearbox oil. So...assuming it is a crankshft oil seal has anyone had first hand experience of replacing one? I assume the oil seal is on the clutch side? Do you require any specialised tools and is it something that could be done with a bit of mechanical knowledge.. Any comments would be most welcome Regards

Howdo Guys. Lady luck was with me twice last week. After a few months of deciding what I was going to do with my pair of Dalesmans I got stuck in. One is going to be restored to original the other is going to get developed. I had a Dalesman when a kid for schoolboy scrambling and thought it was great, in later life and now into twinshock trialling everyone I speak to says they weren't very good for trialing, engine being to peaky with no bottom end at all. So I'm on a mission to make one work at trials. Good luck one, a mate asked me to put some brake shoes in his Seeley, on closer inspection they are identical to the Puch moped shoes fitted to the front end (well no…

I was about to start a 330 restoration shortly having bought the bike a couple of years ago. I knew that the Swing Arm bearings were shot when I bought it but on closer inspection I can now see that the chain has eaten it's way through the underneath of the swing arm at the pivot/ bearing area. There was no rubber fitted and the manual doesn't show one that I can find. Where might a find a replacement or can anyone recommend an engineering workshop that could repair bearing in mind that the swing arm is aluminium. Does the 242 swing arm fit? Also found the fork casting around fork pinch bolt had been glued back in place and fell off when I prodded it! The other leg has …

this past year with picking up British kit bikes. First last fall with the Saracen, then the Sachs powered Sprite this Summer, and now with a Penton / Wassell. I first bought this bike in 1997, then restored it to a competition level and rode it a lot and like a dummy sold it. Getting it back was like a time warp. All these years it has been sitting on display in an office and it is exactly like it was when I sold it. I hope I don't make that mistake again.
