Kombivan, I have had the same problems finding information. If you PM me I can send you a PDF of a manual with all the torque settings, oils and quantities and factory specs for the bike. Or you could visit todotrial.com and download the manual. It is actually for the 349/4 but from what I can see most parts are common. Oh, its in Spanish, but the important stuff is in English too.

Lovely. Can't think of anything else to add.

Hi Vexed,
I wouldn't worry too much about the work, these gearboxes and selectors are quite simple compared to the 349 types. The gearbox on the 200 is much the same as the 123 and hadn't changed for some time. If you can get hold of a Clymer (I think) workshop manual for Montesas upto 1975/6 this should help you. There always seem to be a few on that there popular auction site.
If you have the clutch cover off already check the selector return spring (on the end of the gear selector shaft) and the spring and bearing that locates in the selector drum. This is usually a hollowed bolt on the topside of the RH centre crank case. If you remove the bolt carefully there should be a spring and ball bearing inside. Mind it doesn't ping across the workshop.
Best of luck

Weren't Honda doing some developments with composite cylinder liners, ceramic piston rings? I seem to remember them trying oval pistons as well to reduce the width of the old V4 GP racing engines back in the late 80's or early 90's. It's this sort of stuff that gets the old grey matter working overtime (read that as dreaming)

That's great, thank you. No major rush as I haven't got to the stage in the rebuild of putting the wheels back on. That's going to be a while yet.

Hi, Can anyone help me with the dimensions for a Mk1 349 rear brake torque arm please? I'm sure this was covered some time ago and after trawling through I can't seem to find it. I think I will have to make one so overall length, width and thickness and the hole dimensions with distance between the holes would be great. Failing that if anyone has a spare that they want rid of then let me know.

HI Will,
This company seems to have an extensive range of services www.central-wheel.co.uk. Have looked at them myself for my Montesa when I get to the wheels. If you decide to strip the wheels yourself and have them re-anodised don't forget to measure the offsets. I nearly made this mistake some years ago. Best of luck with the project.

Hi fellas, It's been a while since my last post but I have finally started the refurb. of my 79/80 Cota 349 (it's only been sitting in the garage for 20months, not bad in my book). Everything has been straight forward so far however, I'm splitting the cases to replace all the bearings and seals but having trouble removing the clutch drive gear (the one on the crank shaft). I have the flywheel and clutch off and it looks as though some heat has been applied to the crank shaft in the past. There are no signs of damage or repairs to the crank, it all looks good. So is applying a little heat to the gear the trick to getting it off? I am a little nervous of applying brute force and ignorance as I have seen pictures and read tales of woe regarding 349 crankshafts and flywheels.
Any help would be muchly appreciated.
Thanks
Andrew
Done it! A little tension in the pullers and some gentle heat and it popped straight off.

Todotrial.com have manuals. There is one for a 348 Cota but not sure of the year. The manuals are basically copies of the originals with all of the specs. and settings. All of the text is in Spanish but the charts with oils, settings etc. are in English too.

Hi Simon,
The brake arm on my 1980 349 is angled away from the hub and then back to the verticle (if that makes sense). I've taken a photo but can't work out how to attach it to this message. It was a bit out of focus anyway. If anyone wants to let me know how to post a photo (without creating photobucket etc. accounts) the info would be welcome.

Been watching a headlight, horn with harness and handlebar switch with harness on flea bay. Taken off a new bike in the 70's and stored well, so condition good. I was going to have a go at it but has now sold for a total of

There's another set of engine steady bars on ebay if anyone's interested. Sale ends in 3 or 4 days.

Only if they've got a UK passport!

Hi,
There are some on Ebay at the moment. This seller was the lead I had for you. I've just bought the top engine stay from him and the service was brilliant. He didn't have what I needed listed at the time, so I emailed him and asked if he had one as it looked as though he was breaking a bike. His reply was very quick and said basically that he did have one and would list it later that same day. Received 2-3 days later. BRILLIANT! He has since found another if anyone is interested.
Andrew
PS. There is a brand new pair of bars if you check out worldwide listings. Bit expensive though and in Israel.

slim285,
How did you get on sourcing the engine steady bars? If you are still having difficulty finding some I may have a lead for you.

Hi,
I'm probably leaving myself wide open for abuse but I bought a Cota 349 just before Christmas. Sandifords tell me it's a 1979/80 model. I've started to have a general look around it before I start taking things apart to get a rough idea of the job in hand and found a couple of obvious things.
The shock absorbers are not standard (they're not even a matching pair). After investigation I note that the standard shocks were Telesco Hydrobag. Never heard of them but cannot for the life of me find any info on'tinterweb regarding a possible supply. The '81 model (white wonder?) is fitted with Betors. Were the Telesco jobbies no good? Can anyone help with info on which are better or a supply for the Telesco if this is the way to go?
At this stage I think I'm going to be posting a few wanted ads in the classified section.
Thanks in advance

Hi SLIM285,
I think we're in the same boat. I have a 349 and finding parts etc can be tricky. I've found a good site but it's in Spanish www.vallmoto.com. He has loads of spares (genuine and pattern) for most Montesas'. It would take some time but if you look through all the parts lists you may be able to recognise what you need. Also Jeff at Sandifords knows a fair bit. Best of luck.

Thanks for the replies fellas.
IKB, Thanks for the suggestion. I'm trying to keep the bike as original as possible and the only fault with the stanchions is the pitting so I think it will be a re-chrome.
Fivemeister. I used Calladines' about 20 years ago for some polishing. I must admit I didn't know they re-chromed forks. Well worth a call.
Thanks
Andrew

Thanks Andy,
The forks are still in the bike at the mo. I'll give them a ring when I get to taking them apart.

Now that puts a slightly different angle on it. Can you remember who had them in stock? Thanks for the info.

That's great. Thank you.

Hi,
I don't know whether I'm in the right section for this but can anyone recommend someone who can re-chrome my fork stanchions off a 1979/80 Montesa 349?
I'm in the Nottingham area.
Thanks in anticipation.
