Is it just me, but I have just ordered a 10 tooth front sprocket, ( had an 11 on it ), for my 2013 250 Gas Gas Pro, i'm still running the original Gas Gas 41 tooth rear as in very good order.
I ordered a new Regina 520 chain and when it came to fitting it was too long, even on max adjustment on the snail cam, so I took one link out and now with some pressure I can put the split link in, but its way to tight and I fear if I rode it like that it would put undue pressure on the gearbox bearing that carries the drive shaft.
Has anyone else had this problem ??????
Would a set of Jitsie or similar snail cams give more adjustment????????
I've changed lots of chains in the past with no issues.
The previous chain was an O ring which was too heavy duty, but fitted perfectly adjustment wise with the 11/41 setting.
I fear I'm missing something obvious here.
Thanks.
Dave.

Hi Mudyman,
I'm currently renovating a 248 and my tank is away for spraying.
Mine has the external fuel gauge, which is an external clear tube and raised numbers in litres 1 to 5 which gave a view of the fuel level.
I have seen others without that which I think are the later models.

Hi John,
Nothing on the horizon, I do them as a hobby, between work riding the Gas Gas and everything else.
Probably get something later in the year to see me through the winter months.

Sorry everyone the IPad has cropped the images for some reason, it was the full bike.......sorry not that computer friendly

This the one I've been asking the questions about. Montesa 248.
Anyway nearly done, petrol tank has been lined to protect from ethanol and is being professionally sprayed and new decals.
Hope the images attach.
Then it'll be on Trials Central for sale.

Thanks guys, what I didn't mention was that the felt pad has worn through and then the cam has worn through the metal strip that supports the felt pad so theres nothing to support a new piece of felt.
I understand guys that these things are going to be likes hens teeth and i'm probably going to have to manufacture something, thanks for your help.
Regards
Dave.

Hi everyone, still on with my rebuild of the 248 and I'm having trouble sourcing a felt pad that sits on the stator plate to wipe the flywheel cam.
I'm in Lancashire, UK.
Ps. Tried Inmotion UK ..........no joy.

Thanks lineaway,
The rear seems ok, i'll have a go at replacing the oil at weekend it cant be that difficult its just a case of getting stuck in, it never seems as difficult once you've started. If that doesn't give it more resistance then ill look at replacing the springs or manufacture a small spacer for the top of the station.

Hi everyone,
I own a 2013 250 Gas Gas Pro, which appears to be running low and soft at the front end.
I appreciate I am a rather healthy 16 stone in riding kit and that may have an impact, but before I look to deeply into this issue I want to check the basics and replace the fork oil with 7.5 weight.
Wherever I look I always seem to find a measurement from the top of the compressed station to the top of the oil, surely there must be a quantity measurement for this, which would be easier, or am I missing something here.
Also are there any firmer springs on the market for this model , or are spacers available to take a little sag out of the spring..............has anyone else had a similar issue which they have solved.
Many thanks.
Dave.

Thanks Spusdad, got hold of Kev at Kev breed on racing and he's pretty confident that he has got some that are almost identical.
Paul, contacted Jared but he only had first oversize and no standard bore, but a good contact though.
Thanks to all,
Dave.

Thanks Paul,
I'll email him tonight, thanks.

Hi Paul,
Glad you got her going, did you manage to find some tank decals in the end?
Thanks to all for the advice I'll get onto Southwest Montesa tmrw.
Dave.

Thanks Australia,
I've got the lads at Inmotion Bultaco UK, looking into alternatives from Bultaco etc to see if they're close.
I'll just keep a watch on Ebay for someone breaking an engine as well.
Your right there aren't many about these days, some 348s and 349s but very few 248s.
Thanks for your assistance.
Dave.
-
Thanks, Inmotion can't get them and the one on Ebay is piston etc but no rings, thanks anyway.
Dave.

Hi, I'm having trouble sourcing a set of piston rings for a 1981 Montesa 248, the larger L shaped one on my bike has broken and they seem hard to find. Has anyone managed to source any, or had the same problem and found an alternative. the piston is the standard it's not been re bored and the cc is 239.3. Many thanks folks. Dave.

Thanks for the replies chaps........the website I found early in my search, classicbikedecals , that I couldn't open has now come back online and is under development.
They do all the classic Spanish Marques and the 248 ones are £22.50
Admittedly that's without the round tank badges but I have those already.
Thanks.
Dave.

Can anyone help me find a set of decals for the white tanked 81 Montesa 248 that had the external pipe fuel gauge .
I know Spanish Bikes site has them but at over £100, seems rather steep, when similar 348 / 349 ones are £40 ish in the UK.
A site keeps coming up when you search the net for the above stickers of classicbikedecals but the site cannot be accessed?????
I know I might have to just put my hand in my pocket and pay the above high price but just exploring other options before my pants are pulled down.
Thanks everyone.

Thanks MONT 315 that PDF will make life a lot easier.

Thanks guys, what is the correct float level/setting for the tlr 200 please.
-
Thanks Rollox.
I'm still running the original Honda exhaust, which Classictrial say works really well when used in conjunction with a well sorted carb.
I believe historically my bike was a Californian import which makes you think it may be chocked up somewhere due to their strict fuelling laws, is there anything to be removed in the exhaust system?
Or has anyone any comments on changing it to a WES or DEP system, or similar.
Thanks.

Hi guys,
Took the top off my TLR, cleaned the piston ,head and reground the valves, new seals etc.
It had the original Keihin carb on it which was a bit past its sell by date, but I also got a replacement carb with the bike, a SHENG WAY, which are the cheap Keihin replicas I believe.
None of the jets are marked with numbers?
Anyway, fitted it but it has a fluctuating tickover. It starts and runs fine but settles at a tickover, then after a few minutes drops several hundred rpms and cuts out/stalls. Restart it and its fine again. The throttle cable is lubed and free and not catching anywhere
I have had the inlet off it and smoothed it off with fine glass paper on a flat surface and fitted the correct O ring to prevent carb distortion.
I've just ordered some new jets for it so we'll see how it goes with them in.
Its a new Iridium plug and the timings fine.................anybody had similar problems or have a SHENG WAY carb fitted. I'm in the UK at sea level so its not an altitude issue.
Regards.

THANKS TO ALL THE PEOPLE WHO CONTRIBUTED.
GOT TWO NEW WEDGES AND AS I TOOK IT APART I FOUND THAT THE PREVIOUS OWNER HAD ONLY PUT ONE WEDGE IN FOR WHATEVER REASON.
NOW WITH THE AIDE OF THAT VERY EXPENSIVE HONDA TOOL ( A SPOKE ) I GOT THE TENSION RIGHT AND LOCKED IT UP.
WE NOW HAVE A VERY QUIET TLR.................NEW QUESTION BEING POSTED ABOUT ERRATIC TICKOVER.
REGARDS.
-
Thanks guys, new parts ordered, will be here in a couple of days.
Let you know if it's cured the problem.
-
Hi Craig ,
I've removed the locknut and found that the wedges are locked in position they are stuck fast.
I'll probably order a new one as I'm sure they should have a small amount of movement prior to the locknut being tightened.
Dave.
-
Thanks Craig, I'll see what condition they're in tomorrow, but that answers my question.
Many thanks.
Dave.
