  1. yeah, you need to render over that clay lump ;-]
  2. you don't want any teflon getting in your brake fluid !!
  3. Hi Ted - that friction plate mod makes perfect sense.... its always the simple things that make the difference isn't it? I use the castrol power 1 (albeit 10w 50) in the ktm on both the engine and gearbox sides (split oils) as ktm specify the same grade oil, not a gearbox specific oil. I phoned the tech people at castrol and they recommended the 10w 30 4t for the Gasser box........... I have used it in the ty-asaurus too and it works well. I reckon combined with your clutch mod it would be spot-on faultless ...........
  4. Ted - I have used this oil ............ and the light gear oil ................... and atf ..................... I am now using castrol power 1 10w 30 and that is what I will be sticking with! cheers - Andrew p.s - what was your clutch mod??
  5. peanutbutterkitkats sounds really wrong. But I like stuff like that, so I'll try one
  6. Feetupfun, thanks for that - I was worried as I dont remember hearing that noise before. We had been dinging about at the RTC practice facility for a full day, pretty much all the time (aside from tea and digestive biccie breaks) so the bike had got pretty hot. After putting it back together, I used castrol 10w 30 rather than the putoline light gear oil that I had used before, and it seems quieter............ The clutch basket whirs and rumbles though at neutral............... reminds me of the ktm. it looks like the outer clutch basket is no longer available either - the play on mine is more like 5mm, but it isnt 'clanky-no cush'. yikes. cheers.
  7. Moving on from Mrs Boghopper 350's home-made pizza. Opened up the TY this morning; no loose stuff causing the rattle, but the outer clutch basket has some play, both in and out play - which I think is normal - and there is some rotational movement between the outer clutch basket and the cog that it is attached to - and i'm not sure how normal that is (nothing in Haynes or after a google) is this normal? cheers
  8. Get back to your pizza! ;-]
  9. hi all, top day on the TY today, but on getting the bike home, I notice that the clutch has started making a rattle ............. more pronounced with the bike idling in neutral with the clutch lever pulled in, but then as soon as you put it in gear, it stops rattling? any ideas? cheers
  10. Ted - http://cowmleisure.com/?page_id=32 this place looks great! thanks for the kind offer............. will certainly bear that in mind; much appreciated.
  11. Thanks for that Aussy.
  12. Hi Ted - cheers. the ty is not bad; p.o/s have done the kickstart mod. gear shift mod. swing arm bushes. mammy siller footpegs. fork tubes. betor shocks. and I have done a heap more ............. played around on it in the yard tonight and with youtube comparables in my head, it didnt sound too much like a digger ;-] reckon it will be a labour of love getting it spot on. the yellow one is lovely ............. but....... if I had a bike that pristine, i'd be worried about using it properly......... I like the idea of a TY that is mechanically spot on, but a bit dinged about. be good to see the fantic ............ oh, off topic, but your matey would be good on a 250 pro............
  13. yep; the getting it cocked up bit is the biggest concern!
  14. http://www.sep-kegworth.co.uk/page2.htm here? did they ask for your new piston to be sent as well (so they could measure it before doing job) and did they do everything that was required to just fit to the bike? cheers
  15. http://www.pjme.co.uk/acatalog/Job_Packing.html here? did they ask for your new piston to be sent as well (so they could measure it before doing job) and did they do everything that was required to just fit to the bike? cheers
  16. Thanks for the help; looks like the best thing to do is to get it sleeved and pop in a decent piston and leb. I thought about the 200 conversion, then decided that I would be best keeping the beastie bone-stock. I have emailed Mick Abbey for a quote on the resleeve but no reply as yet, and Stan Stephens will need a telephone call as he doesnt provide an email address. also trying to find another cylinder to get this done so the bike isnt laid up. part of me is tempted to blow some money on a wossner and just put it into the current bore (which is to my eyes ok)and see what that is like. Maybe just too much of a gamble. thanks again, much appreciated.
  17. Hi Ted - Langcourts are good; they have done ktm 4t stuff for me before and did a good job. Reckon I might stick with a standard set up with a new liner and a wossner.... just need to locate another cylinder. thanks for the help.............
  18. Hi Ted yep; new rings too. reckon the rattle is probably the yee-hah piston and rings. spoke to the local 2 stroke tuning place - bdk - and they reckon there are two options; re-line in the conventional manner or re-line and plate. I seem to have read somewhere that plating (nikasil) is not the way to go on these cylinders; not sure why though. I think I need to find myself another cylinder, get a decent piston and leave it with bdk to do their thing (they are mega busy and will take ages and I dont want the bike sat there with its rod hanging out for weeks [oo-er missus]) I will try your mick and stan as well - se if they can turn things around a bit quicker. A silent TY? blimey. Actually, I might have exagerated slightly about the steroids.
  19. Noticed I'd put a small dent in the side of my tank last time out .. not happy !! Anyone any tips for fixing this? if the dent isnt creased you could try blowing it out with your compressor or, if able to do the calculation of expansion blah, fill the tank with the correct amount of water and put it in the freezer. if you were a graphics man, I would say put a sticker over it my final and only other suggestion - as seen on the dent of a car many years ago - is to circle it with a marker pen and write the word 'oops' next to it....... ok; I'll get my coat..................

    Pistons Etc.

hello all, ok; dilema is this. I have a rattly ty ('so do I' you all shout back ;-] ......) basically, when I got the bike, I looked up the exhaust port and saw blow by. Taking the head off confirmed that the cylinder was on maximum rebore. The piston had a jammy bottom ring, so I put in a cheapo piston and new leb. it sounded rattlier than before, and I changed back to the old leb as the new one was faulty. Slight improvement, then a bit more improvement jamming up the fins with rubber, but still rattley. No blow by on new cheapo piston. So, can I assume that bore is ok and that a nice expensive wossner piston and leb will make it a bit better? Or, do i get it lined/sleeved and start again at 66mm (stock)? I know that they all rattle, but mine sounds like a bl**dy woodpecker on steroids. cheers
  21. Ted - thanks for the price on the levers; reckon i'll be doing copycat! good luck for tomorrows trial - ship
  22. under the silver frame paint, there is blue paint; not sure if it was painted bultacosaurus blue as a finish coat, or if the blue is an undercoat for the silver. As you can see, the bike is far from mint, but its had lots of bits and bobs done by previous owner/s (kickstart fix, gear change fix, foot pegs from sammy miller, new fork legs etc) the last headache was the airbox; layers of old flaky paint getting into the carb .................... I ended up burning it all off with mrs shipdamites blowtorch and giving it a couple of coats of satin smoothrite (I havent used the satin finish before and it looks much better than the full gloss) at some point (not too soon [hopefully]) I will need to find a barrel that I can rebore for a nice new oem piston .............. sure that my cheapo piston is cause of some of the rattles. cheers
