  1. was that a bridgport turret mill? you'll probably need to clock the head again as well as fix the lever. Have you tried heating one whist freezing the other part. i.e put the shaft in freezer for vcouple hours and put blowlamp on the gear for a couple ninutes ..the gear will expand and probably just about fall onto the shaft. good luck ..bart

  2. does this include the several pages of previous replies?... If you're on top of that lot you must have all the issues in front of you just for what it's worth Mark I think on balance blah blah provided you take care of the access, commercial interests/responses from town it is a good idea, it may worry some who have got used to West end car park but It must also provide opportunities to the club and the trial.

  3. Looks like I just spent 5 minutes adding my 3 halpence worth in wrong forum.. typical..Anyway. I think its a positive move on balance. With a start area as described it opens many opportunities to enhance the trial provided the concerns voiced above are dressed i.e easy acces to and from for riders spectators. I have ridden several ssdt and many "similar" multi day trails abroad where the club & local council have got together and provided shuttle buses AND show arena trial free in the evenings, culminating in e.g a firework show , speeches from the mayor etc. These events pay small start money and also by results to top riders and wildcards enable traders to keep on selling etc. With a little imagination and the space many simiar "sideshows" bicycle trials...balancing competitions...food beer..talent shows.. local bands ..scratch bands from competitors can involve many more people. I.m not saying these things are neccesary but they do make for good atmosphere for all interested parties. Finally all credit to Mark and the club for airing the proposal.

  4. Generally a good move I think , the atmosphere of west end has diminished largely due to lack of accesability despite it being "in the town". I've griped about this before (vis big tents and covered /secret servicing lack of parking etc.) As everybody has pointed out the main concerns are for primarily competitors beang able to easily get to and from thier digs and to keep the townsfolk and commerce involved. The arguments are all above in one form or another. From personal experience riding classic multi day events abroad the club/local council organise shuttle buses AND promote free nightly shows or arena trials for primarily the locals which have top riders and some "wildcards (paid I have to say..by results would be good) culminating in firworks show etc etc at end of the week. Thinking along these lines may open other opportunities for the main event. With a little positive attitude a move like this could be very good for all concerned. Finally all credit to Mark for inviting comment etc.

  5. Thanks for moral support you guys..I must be like the good shepherd trying to leave not one soul behind; it just is so selfish of these odd gits. It is not fair to the individual to "finger " him or the circumstances, although this is not the first time (out of the two occasions he has ridden in our events) when our club has had a problem with him. It's just another one of things that puts off younger generation from sticking thier head above the paraphet (whatever that is!). Happy trialing....

  6. Having spent numerous hours organising and setting out our club trial and being eaten alive by bugs midges ,horseflys etc tc. going through all the usual problems of access, observers etc it was gratifying for our team to get nearly 100% apreciation from riders. As usual it seems there is always one who feels the need to be different. What is the experience of other organisers? and how do you deal with these self interested types?

  7. Probably not related but i've been experimenting with float height on my beta rev 3 (i suspect it's even more critical on the beta 'cause of angle carb is on.. too muchpetrol in the carb is very bad even very very bad!. It seems that a good indication of when you'r getting near to the right fuel level yo just get that couple of "fires" on over run ..when throttle is shut after revving.... it probably means the exhaust is awash with unbured fuel which is getting fired.. wish I knew how far to "adjust " this as I understand beta's will suffer from lack of fuel in carb (stop on uphills) very easily if float level is too low. Sorry to ramble on out loud but you never know somewbody might pick up on this and give me chapter & verse on carburation.

  8. Sort out the basics first..slow action..black twistgrip bit of slack in he cable... carburation ( most betas run like a dog..too rich due to float height issues) (ignition timing not sure that isn't black magic box control). when all that is sorted spend some time riding the bike before going in for mechanical mods as you are planning . The beta 200 is recknown as one of the smoothest bikes around but like all bikes you have to give it its best chance to do your bidding... which leads on to right hand technique!!!!!

  9. As a manufacturer of footpegs for trials bikes believe me I have looked into it in some depth angles, ergonomics etc etc. It simply appears that Beta (orr whoever makes foorest hangers for them) simply have no idea of manufacturing tolerances I have two "identical" 08 rev 3's bought at same time new with nearly consecutive frame numbers and yet there is a noticable difference between the two bikes (angles etc) when you fit aftermarket / replacement footrests. I even had to fit grubscrews into back face to make my footrests "sit " level when vieved from behind. Just about every bike made in last 10 years should have distance from centre of mounting hole to back face of 17mm . one of my bikes was 18.3! but the OEM footrest had been made up with extra weld fills. Crazy situation but definitly beyond control of aftermarket guys like me!.

  10. Have done a little research in meantime ..it appears that Beta have adressed this problem. Beta have changed the alloy since 08 production. cases were magnesium/aluminium alloy which I guesse would have been a few grammes lighter but!!! My bike appears to have been made "on the cusp" of the changeover date but once again Beta uk are prpared to replace under warranty. By time I get all these bits on the bikes they'll be too good to sell!

  11. Just in case anybody else has experience on this I checked voltage at wires to Rad/therm switch on both bikes voltage is 8.4 then put both bikes ticking over in the sun one ( the most recent rebuild) had fan come on within 5 minutes and it will only go off if I blow airline onto the switch no matter how long I wait. The other rebuilt 2 months ago I had to rev it quite hard to get the fan to come on ..it did and it went off after a minute or so (functioning correctly one assumes) ( Incidentally the fan speeds appeared to be same but the correctly functioning fan was pulling hotter air) I then thought maybe water not circulating.. airlock ...pump impeller knackered so took cover off and found dreaded corrosion so I have to fix this now (maybe all the bits of corrosion are blocking the rad?) before continuing investigations. My next move after flushing rad and fixing corrosion will be to swap the rad/thermo switches. Has anybody out there found a good repair for this corrosion around the O ring seal on water pump housing?

  12. This is first time in 40 years of trialing (i've had em all) that I have a fifteen month old bike (O8 Beta rev 3) with knackered casting due to corrosion at water pump I know I'm not the only one to have this problem why don't Beta adress the problem? I buy 2 new bikes every two years , after 2 engine rebuilds 2 stator plates in last 15 months this is just about the last straw! What is the clutch/water pump casing made of ( I guesse obvious answer is chocolate) but I have to consider weld & remachine repair as 2 casings are gonna be telephone numbers .

  13. Thanks guys not too much to go on then.. I'm beggining to wonder if this may be a chicken or egg situation as It wasn't me riding the bike at tthe time ; as sensitive as women can be they dont seem to be too aware of mechanical things. Sposse that may get me in trouble!

  14. wish I had as many replies to my "plea" for help (fan running slow) We ran gassers fro 15 years (and had a fair share of mechanical problems) then had a go with mont 4rt's which were lovely to own but a real handfull ..been running 08 200 rev 3's for 18 months since new easist bike to ride you could hope for.. we don't do national /big steps/climbs any more and I can recall being lacking in power only twice in 18 months all the other several hundred sections the 200 made eaier by not being too quick off the mark. My only negative comment is that both the bikes have had the stator plate pack up at the most awkward of times and both bikes have needed new mains fitting. Fair play to John lampkin though he has replaced the stators under warranty both times. Just about finished fixing Janets bike now and feel like moving pair of them on but... I expect they will be good for at least a couple of years now. On balance I would say the 200 is a great bike for your average punter... when buying listen hard to the motor..swishing sound is bad..mains (if in doubt take plug out and kick it over). clutch rattle is ok...piston "slap" on exhaust port is ok...other than that light switching / kill button assy is crap and normal wear and tear reflects in price you pay.

  15. Im sure I've been down this road before but am too senile to remember. i've just rebuilt 200 rev 3 08 mains & stator ..everything is nice except that the fan isn't running fast enough... obviously I.ve been poking about behind the headstock reconecting the stator , refilling the rad etc. the one light that is working stays at same brightness no matter how many revs its doing so is there anyone who hasexperinced this and got any ideas ? how difficult is it to get to this area, is it remove rad job? I guesse its a dodgy earth but as its such a difficult place to get and look previous experience would be big help.

  16. Thouroughly endorse every word in your report exept perhaps a better choice of words regarding vicious observers. Yes it is somewhat of a lottery regarding different judgements but all observers have a system of being fair to all the riders so in the end the result is as fair as you could expect. Believe me 5 days of pouring rain (Friday was nice) is a trial of endurance and patience with 10 hour days ( including 6 hours on the section) mistakes can occur but if you crunch the numbers there is a very small percentage of errors. For example one rider came to a double sub on the moors he said he cleaned the first section and 3 in the second ; If he had been marked in the way he would have to accept as fair it would have been a clean and a five which would have cost him dearly in the final results..... this sort of dispute is not pleasant but the observers are on the spot for all the riders and not there to be bullied or intimidated. Regarding going to Scotland later the weather is always more of a lottery than further south but you wouldn't like the midges either!. It is also a real reliability trial it was good to see an ordinary sort of guy get around the six days carrying no tools on the Xispa. For me when it comes to choosing a bike it doesn't matter who finishes where in the top 10 or if they are works riders exept that I recognise that I am paying for it in the price of the bike.

  17. What Can I say thats not already been said!!!it's not a difficult job but shuold not be neccesary on such young bikes details regarding doing the job here...somewhere! I have tried to elicit some reason for this but it seems less said soonest mended is the attitude. As I said elswhere final insult was

  18. T'weather changes . so fast you just got to be a boy scout and be prepared Best way to deal with it is to just take it as it comes. Its nice to find others as keen to get there as me I must be getting old cause although Pubs are nice... they are also everywhere wheareas trials action is best enjoyed out on the sections . I guesse so long as you dont get nasty drunk and take your empties home a few cans would be best compromise.
