  1. Well what another day brings, bought new slide, needle and needle guide, slide was wrong a #2 instead of a #4 my Amal carb guy said reason for fuel consumption, carb was basically mixed up,put it back together and it started first kick and much less smoke.....result. It tuned up easily I think it will cause less air leaks @ the slide, old needle was SO worn almost no taper left @ the end,my Amal carb guy mentioned the slide was the biggest issue being the wrong one (rich) and the fact they wear out faster than the carb body,@ this stage I won't be changing carbs and happy ...as is the bike.
  2. Yes I know, not like they were made very well....your answer made me laugh, cheers
  3. Thanks for the reply,I'am all good setting up this type of carb but I'am starting to thinks its not economical to go much further...it is old and rather worn, shame Amal didn't use a brass or hard chrome slide. I can purchase a Keihin 26PWK which is in good used condition and its genuine,I have researched and the Chinese knock offs and they can be a mixed bag, jetting is something I will have to face. Will update when I decide what to do as I may carry on with the Amal for a while and continue setting up the rest of the bike.
  4. Mixture screw is set @ 1.5 turns out from memory,I will add I never touched the timing as I found it to be correct just cleaned the points and checked the gap as correct. Will start of with a new needle as mentioned and replace main jet for correct size,I would say if the needle is worn the jet will be too. I'am not prepared to get carried away with such an old carb and may go to a Japanese carb.
  5. I understand your situation as many of our best trail riding spots have been shut off, when I rode MX we used to practice by trail riding forestry tracks in some prime area's locally ....no more. I've only ridden a TY briefly but that is was a good machine for the era,I think you will enjoy it. Welcome to this forum its a great resource and good people on here, cheers.
  6. Drained my tank today after a short ride recently,I used 500ml of fuel which seems too much,I'am aware its a bigbore 2S but think that's a bit much IMO. My jetting isn't stock as the main jet is #150 and manual says #145 don't expect that is helping, plug colour indicates rich and I guess it is a bit smokey but runs crisp on throttle. Noted the following, needle rather worn @ tip, aircleaner clean, choke shutting properly, bike idles well after startup, running 25:1 on conventional 2S oil. Plan to replace needle........any other suggestions would be welcome thanks.
  7. Well I did find after further inspection the brake shoe cam was in poor condition....looks like someone had taken a grinder to it,hunted through my hoard of bike parts and found a near new set of 100mm brake shoes, they had the metal slips bonded on them and due to the thicker linings a test fit revealed a great working rear brake.....happy camper. My alloy brake pedal was in a poor state and cracked so I fabbed one out of steel with a hardened steel pivot bush,a bit of work but works good. My leg is fully healed so I fired up the bike which took a little more kicks than expected, appears it only starts on the choke where before it didn't need it.....not sure whats changed???. Engine ran much crisper and after a ride it felt like it had more power,I can only assume burning out the rear muffler had the desired result. Few bugs to sort but happy with the results .
  8. Wow that is really bad, never seen a Honda one crack like that is the problem just on the trials bikes?....never seen a dirtbike one do that.
  9. Welcome, age isn't a barrier its a mental thing, and I'am mental by buying a bike @ my age but still know how to ride....a little slower now of course.. Go for it really.
  10. Thanks you are correct just looked @ my manual and see them, the lining aren't too bad so I will make replacements, cheers.

    Helicoils.

Timeserts are best seen a lot of helicoils fail in aircooled stuff, just make sure you fit them properly, good luck.

    hello

Easy Google search came up with a PDF in English, check it our, cheers.
  13. potto

    hello

Welcome we are a similar age, hopefully you will find one in English no such luck with my old 349,I ran 3 Spanish built boats in my seagoing job so learnt a bit but most stuff in my manual is totally beyond me. Do an extended Google search you should be good as it is a later bike so you will find the info you need in English I would think. Good luck.
  14. Ok got ya didn't know you were from the UK ,what you was funny now I know your joke we moan if my country if it rains for less than a week . Cheers Dean.
  15. You pack a piece of steel around the brake arm cam and all is golden....really,will get shoes relined next week by local outfit that do motorbike stuff. I plan to rebush the brake pedal as its really worn all should be fine then.
  16. Hhhhhmm not sure about that answer ??....anyway moving on still working on my swingarm cause its still not right, measures indicate on shock mount is 9mm further forward than the other....how could this be ,well it appears to have been rewelded by the same clown that cut the swingarm. Have had issues with brake lever touching frame, something amiss...pulled the brake backing plate on found how an expert fixed it!!
  17. Yes a bad coil will heat up after use then tip over, plugs well I find in lawn movers ,chainsaws, scooters and ride -on mowers they don't appear to last long....a fuel quality thing, not really sure?.
  18. Brilliant work, went back in your topic and read all the way through, hell that bike was rough..wow look @ it now. I have my wiring to sort out and a condenser relocation is on my list. I noted with interest your frame repair,do you feel if you just welded up the cracks they would come back?,appears cracking around the steering head is common issue with the older Montesa's. Careful reinforcing of these area's is as you have done appears the only way,I have cracks at places on the edge of repairs because the haven't been done right . I do suspect my steering head angle has been changed @ some point...not a lot I can do about that. Keep up the good work, you must be getting close to a test run ?.
  19. I don't know this vehicle but know central locking....it can be a pain,as the solenoids get older they get weaker,it makes no difference if they air driven or electrical types, another issue is the linkage rods can get sticky with dust and dirt, pop the cover panel and make sure the are well lubricated. If the solenoids are electric make sure the power plug is clean and well connected,on a vacuum solenoid check to make sure the air line is on properly. Lastly try a new battery in the remote...you never know, good luck.
  20. That's a great method,in reality mine will be just hard graft ,the last crappy paintjob on the motor is failing off anyway, around the fins on barrel and head will be the hardest I feel.
  21. p****** with rain today little I could do little outside, did some domestics inside...geez that was boring and got that done, went on here and researched past topics and learnt s@itloads about my bike, hours later know heaps more a good thing.
  22. Thanks again, engine will be essentially stripped of paint before repainting, well versed with this being a car restorer and aircooled guy, honestly I wouldn't be bothering with these but as its engine out to repair the frame it makes little sense not to,besides I 'am thinking the frame is worse than it looks....really. Cheers Dean.
  23. Swingarm mostly done ,found it was 4mm out of square after "jigging" it up,ground out several old arc welds as they were full of slag and little penetration, one shock mount was bent so vee'd out the weld tacked it back straight then ran out of gas . Test fitted the arm on the bike and everything lines up properly as it should, need a new chain @ some stage but old one will do for now. Fitted kill switch but not wired up as yet,had paint matched for frame and have colour code......and no its not going to be black .
  24. Oh you are having me on........right????????????
  25. Hell no you will be fine....your young ,my good mate started racing again after a 30 yr break,he was 57yrs old and built an unstoppable modified TT500 Yamaha and cleaned up his class after a short time much to the disgust of the big bore 2 stroke twinshock guys,@ 62 he retired and found a 30yr old hotshoe who continued winning with that same bike. He got me back into riding, what bike you buy is up too you,I bought my Montesa because it was around the era I rode previously....I don't know what a modern trials bike is . Good luck and go for it, what ever way you go vintage trials or modern you will have a blast, cheers.
