How about some photos of that Garelli? I am riding mine in a twinshock trial this weekend, May 20th at Goldendale, Wa. Hammer and Tongs Twinshock Trial

They look like locals, but can they talk like locals?

Please send me your e mail address, and it's yours. I have been told that it's ok, so no problem. I rode the bike more tonight and it is a bit ferocious at times. I'm going to give myself more time to adjust, but I actually got myself in trouble with all the power a few times. Laia is obviously one heck of alot better rider than I'll ever be. (duh) I found out tonight that some of the programs I have are for 280cc works bikes and they don't work at all well with the stock engine. He said they have been custom writing a program which he will e mail me soon. They start with the Laia Sanz one and then make subtle changes to the ignition timing curve and actually give it less fuel, at almost all the points on the map except Idle which is left at +5%. This reduces the decelleration when the throttle is closed. I tried to post the Laia-E2P file, but of course that won't work, since it's not a jpg or GIF file. Jay

I've had the Mont for a few weeks time and had a chance to get used to the bike and the "High" program it came with. (This is one of the programs which came on the disc) Last friday I had a bit of idle time to load the "RTL 250F" disc onto my pc and figure out the hookups etc to change my computer map. A friend e mailed me a handful of assorted programs to try and none of them has an explanation as to what they do. Rumours among my trials riding friends have indicated one of our local hot shoe trials guys really likes the "Laia Sanz" program, and I was able to find that one among the list of programs which were e mailed to me, so I tried it. I honestly did not imagine that it would make that much difference, but to my amazement it is just phenominal! The thing runs even better! Talk about a sweet running motorcycle. I am very impressed! My hat's off to Laia and Jesus or whomever wrote this map for the M4RT. It works truly amazing! I honesly don't miss my two stroke. (Cota 315R)

Sideup has informed me that Craig is referring to David Isherwood. Whew!

Thanks so much Highland Lassuie for keeping us poor working sods updated on the latest news. It is very much appreciated! Sorry to hear our lad has missed two sections today. That's a shame. I gotta' say I am very impressed with the fact that Ishy is doing so well for a guy who claims to spend alot of time "sleeping on couch". Can't resist posting this photo of the lad suffering through the cold miserable hardship of the Scottish. Wish I was there too so much!

It sounds like a 1992 ('92 has blue cases) or 1993 (gold cases)contact. They are known for having ignition problems. I actually have an ign. module for one, which did not fix mine, but the most common problem is a bad stator coil. A certain motorcycle dealer in washington state (Skagit Powersports) has a guy there Gary L. who can rewind them. I am assuming you have ruled out a bad kill button or connections.

Also timing could affect the jetting at idle. If it were retarded or advanced it could require different fuel mixture.

As they say apicture is worth a thousand words.

Our local top Montesa wrench and former national star DS, has pointed out that correct torque of the clutch hub nut is crucial to a full release. If you just rattle it down it could distort the center hub, causing clutch to drag. (I am only passing on what he told me) Might look into that. JL

I am sure the M4RT makes all the power I need, but it's just something about those Mitani exhaust systems that I like. If I had the money, I'd own the fat header pipe and the big can with a carbon fibre gaurd, for no real good reason. They are just cool. Yes, and then try to bash it.
-
Ishy you are one funny dude! In have been doing just that! I can't get off the darn thing. In all honesty I don't know why I would want to change owt! I must admit that Mitani exhaust system looks pretty sweet. If I had the money I would buy that just for the cool factor. (then I'd probably smash it falling off a big rock)

I spent the evening riding the crap out of this awesome new/used 2005 M4RT. I am so tickeled with it! It has all restrictors out but the muffler cap, and the "fast" engine program. I found it just great. I guess it will take me awhile to explore the properties of these tuning variations. The software disc shows images of assorted impressive "throttle Maps" which implored me to ask Jack if these were simply pacebo mods, or could you tell any difference really. He assured me that you could tell. I like it so much it's hard to imagine improving it. Then he tells me there are Mark Friexa, Laia Sanz, and other sort of "designer" custom written throttle maps to suit these induviduals riding styles. Jeez, how sci-fi is that? I'm not sure all those choices are going to help or hinder. I suppose one would just get tired of messing around with it and leave it just to be done fussing with it. It's a brave new world.

Ishy: As far as I know the M4RT doesn't have an oxygen sensor. I think it makes altitude corrections via a map sensor reading. After tonight I will own one. I am getting the reprogrammable ECM with it and plan to start out with the low end setup that Dennis is using. It's all about grip. Jack told me if the M4RT has an electrical fault it throws a code. The reprogrammer also works as a scan tool. I am curious about the code retreival process and the effects of reprogramming and restrictor placement. A whole new world of tuning options. Jay

I had a fairly good go on a Kary Krahel's new 2006 M4RT (with red anodized rims) and I want one too! Woody is right about just riding the bike. I think for me it would take awhile to trust it on large climbs. It just doesn't sound like it's going to make the "wall of death" and it seems like agony waiting for it to get there. It will take me a long time to get over the trauma I suffered while riding those Damned old 1974 TL's. Just the sound of a four stroke reminds me of riding those lame tiddlers. I still find it amazing every time the M4RT DOESN'T cough on sudden throttle accellerations.

The James Lampkin trials school was one of the most fun and infiormative days I have spent on a motorcycle! James is a great guy! So fun to be around. Full of jokes and levity, but also very serious about the sport of trials. He is truly a gifted rider and superb teacher. I'm sure he will never forget seeing the bottom side of my poor Mont. as I launched it at him and Ishy, directly above their heads. I am very glad that they were able to avoid being gored by it. Jay L.

I think 125 psi shouldn't be out of the question. Just check it. If it's like 70 psi that is low. Good luck to wild Bill. I look forward to hime kicking trials BUTT! JL

The exhaust might be plugged. One sure cure is to have the exhaust system "hot tanked" or perhaps burned out with a torch. Once a fire is lit inside the pipe, flow air through it until a catalytic burn is completed. It will get red hot so be safe how you go about this. Once this is done you will need to repack the rear muffler. If the exhaust is not plugged, proceed to check timing, air filter, and compression. If the top end is well worn out it will be hard to start and sluggish. Good luck.
-
Try going to a bigger pilot jet. If it is on the lean side at idle it will be harder to start.
-
Time to sprawl it. Got a good mechanic?

JP: I so glad to hear you are happy with the bike! I'm also amazed to hear it shifts so smoothly. I was told by the guy I bought it from that it only had first and second. This summer our trials riding exchange student from Idaho, worked on it quite a bit and made it into the running bike you received. He fabricated the alloy seat base and fitted the Hodaka Road Toad rear fender which looks surprisingly good on there I thought. Also he said he changed the trans. oil which it desperately needed. He said it reqd. 2.2 qts (looked up on the internet) which would lead me to assume having the right amount of clean fluid in it caused the shifter parts to suddenly come loose and start to work. Perhaps it had been rusted in there somehow, which bound up the shift drum or something. That is great news! I know it ran well and sounded like a nice solid engine. Between the two bikes I bet there is enough to make one sweet Italjet. Jubal did a very nice job of re bending the sidestand to fit perfectly and modified the Maico Spider kickstarter to work alot better than no kickstarter. He spent two full days working on this bike to make it rideable. The gas tank repair is horribly ugly but it holds gas anyway. Sure would be cool to fab. up an alloy tank for these bikes. Seems like originals are un obtainium. Maybe you can stop beating your head against the wall now.
-
JP: Sounds like you are having an awesome time moving. I am so not jealous of you right now. Glad to hear you are still out there getting ready to start on some cool Italjet projects. Keep us posted if there are any new developments. I will contact you soon at your daytime phone #. Jay

Well since no one has posted on this topic for weeks I am starting to wonder what's up back there in PA with the Italjet crowd. I figure KTM96DUKE has had the bike in his mits for almost five weeks and not a word. Maybe he has fallen off the face of the earth? Maybe his enthusiasm is already diverted to another obscure sport such as billiards or foos-ball. Jay

I never claimed to be smart Tim. I saw french writing and just ass-umed. Anyone who races vintage mx every weekend and tries to ride expert trials is not the sharpest guy around. I shipped the Italjet 350 to our friend KTM Duke so he can play with it starting next friday. I hope to see some pictures so we can enjoy the fruits of his enthusiasm for Italjets. I am already getting antsy for riding and it's only been a week. I am never going to make it six weeks without riding a motorcycle. The Garelli is already mocking me in Italian for breaking my foot on a Suzuki. Jay L.
