  1. Hi folks I am part way through a process of registering a Yamaha TY175, I've sent in the V62 with fees, and some follow up photos and bike description after an email from DVLA. Four months later.....I've received a V55/5 form from DVLA that is for first tax and vehicle reg (Im guessing they could not find any original number) This form assumes you are a likely a dealer and that you have a certificate of conformity, so Im wondering if anyone out there has gone through this process and obtained a cert of conf? Did they even produce such docs in 1980? I heard I could write to yamaha UK and get information but is it bike specifi or just general for all TY 175s in UK, if so then a copy could be used to glean info. Any help appreciated. Ta
  2. Thank you folks, I have a lot to thnk about now
  3. Thanks, I appreciate your experience and advice. Not even TY175 forks? what are the differences? is that a common and good mod or not? You really know your TY's
  4. Thanks feetup, At least it seems it has potential, I was thinking to contact the seller to return or sell it with the info I know. I'll contact the seller to ask what he knows or if he has the contact of the person who he bought it from There is a very very small chance I could find the original motor if all local people. Not easy to find a TY motor I suppose. I thought I had found a bike I had been wanting for a long time so quite disappointed today, I knew it needed work and happy to sort jelly suspension and wheels but I never realised it had the wrong motor, so easy to spot with a bit more info The frame number begins 525-221 Can you even buy the internal gearing for these engines? Thanks
  5. Hi folks, just bought a TY175 at a fair price and I need some help to find out the bike year (roughly) and other info.. It is unregistered but all numbers are there. Couple of strange things about the bike (to my limited TY knowlege) It has chrome wheels and a different front brake plate to others I see, also a plastic generator case. The rear sprocket is HUGE with 60 (teeth?) stamped on it, After a quick internet search, the engine seems to be from a 1978 DT175MX , likely thats why it needs that big rear sprocket. Engine number begins with *2k4-then 6 digits. Dissapointed that the wrong engine is in the bike, I am positive the previous owner ( a police guy) didn't realise as he never used the bike after buying from a guy selling up bikes he had stored for over a decade. Is there any way to save/use this engine by changing internal gearing to get it the same ratios as a TY motor? I think there will be other differences such as ign type and flywheeel weight maybe the cylider ports also? Seems I have got some of a TY, it has a sammy millar tank/seat top and the frame is in very good condition. Thanks
  6. Hi, Are there any alternative rear shocks from other newer makes that could be adapted to fit in the TY? Cheers
  7. Thanks folks, On removing the exhaust on one of the TYs I found I was able to roll the piston side to side a wee bit, I guess that means the small end it totally shot? Yet when I got the bike started it did not sound bad which is impressive no doubt this will involve more than a small end change.
  8. Thanks, looks like the red frame one may be an 85 according to that list. How about the white frame bike with the john shirt parts, would that be an earlier machine? Regards
  9. Hi Folks, Just bought two yamaha ty 250 mono of unknown age. Bikes were bought as non running but complete. both 59N chassis id One has a steel tank with a white frame (poss originally red) it has J. Shirt on the flywheel cover and silencer, the steering lock has been cut down on that bike The other bike has a plastic tank, red frame with a dirt ground out rear link (flat where it faces rear tyre) There are differences in the frames with the red frame bike having a couple of brackets with holes on a down tube at kickstart side, the white frame bike does not have that. I could put all the best bits on one bike and keep the other for spares. I'd like some help on rough dates on these bikes if anyone can help. I'll have to go over both bikes to figure out the "better" bike. Thanks.
  10. Thanks, If it works for fort william it will work for me, seems they set a precedent, I can use that if it needs to go that far.
  11. how do the scottish six day riders manage it? No huge number plates there? I guess I can use the GPS speedo app on my phone if needed.
  12. Hi, Can anyone tell me what I need to be able to (briefly) ride my new Montesa 4RT on the road. It is in the process of being road registered (7 weeks and still no sign of a V5!!!) When I last done this a long ago you needed a fork leg speedo, rear reflector and bulb horn. There will be occasions where it would be convenient to be able to ride it rather than push it.
  13. Hi folks, Considering to create a pre 65 bike (winter(s) project idea) but I'd to know the basic rules that apply to building a machine. Must it be british made only, frames and suspension mods allowed etc. What is the trials definition of a classic? that may be an easier machine to create Thanks
  14. If engine oil came out looking golden...if, it would be fine to use in my old Honda C90 If it looks black after 50 hrs use, I would be pretty worried about that low stressed engine Do most people change engine oils at 15 hrs?
  15. 50 hrs running seems a reasonable time for oil changes (motor and box) if you want to keep the oil golden. I can then use it in my Honda 90 cub
  16. Hi folks, UK post: Apart from the montesa recommended slikolene for the engine and elf for the gearbox what other decent alternatives are used? I've read a few different hours for the engine and gearbox oil changes, for a bike that is not used in competitive trials (does it matter?) what would be a reasonable interval.
  17. Good to know manufacturers are being honest with weights
  18. Hi folks, Iv'e seen Montesa/Honda stats saying their 2022 260 weighs 73 kg, is that a real number? For comparison what is the real weight of say a Beta 2022 250? Just trying to work out exactly how much weight difference there really is between the Montesa and the 2 stroke equivalents
  19. Electric is fine and improving but it is not for me. I like the diversity of engines and their characteristics. There are so many trials bike options from £500 to £6K+ No idea what I may end up with, probably closest bike to home. Regards
  20. Thank you, I only had a brief look but there didn't seem to be any fluid leak around the master or slave cyl. I never knew about slave cylinder mounting cracks that I read about after viewing so i'll also need to check that. Regards
  21. I may be able to buy 2002 Scorpa sy250 (yamaha two stroke engine) (beginners bike for me) for sale but it has a badly dragging clutch. I checked online for new friction and steel plates and it looks like £180 Is that in the normal price range? a slave cylinder if also needed would add even more. I realise I may be able to sort it by cleaning and working on the plain steel plates but if not..maybe not worth doing. Can anyone say what is the average price range of a complete and running machine in reasonable condition? Regards
  22. Well, the government won't let us have new petrol engines in 8 years time so no more 2 or 4 stroke choice. I am sure reality will see that date forgotten
  23. if I go the new bike route (finance deals make it possible) i'll be looking at the montesa 260 or the beta evo 200? not sure they do a 250. If I buy new it will be a keeper. I'm going to a local trial this weekend to talk with riiders there and may still end up buying an older but modern bike. Regarding new bike (montesa and Beta) engine quality and reliability/maintenance it seems the beta suggests piston replacement at 80 hours run time, they have nikasil so expensive to have replated in the future. Montesa I would have valves to adjust and more frequent oil changes I think. Are the two strokes really so bad on pistons? with 4 strokes I am used to cars with hydraulic valve lifters, seems stone age to have to do manual valve adjustment these days, so is the Honda engine that advanced? I have old minis, I expect to adjust the tappets on them, not a 2022 product. Which of the two would you folks suggest? Both will feel fantastic to me having been away from trials bikes for decades. Regards
  24. Thanks for the good advice. I would rather buy a used two stroke, miss the sound and smell I will ask at the local trial events, thinking of a TY250 mono, plenty spares about. It is amazing how light a new trials bike is, seems about 20kg difference,,paying more for less
