    Ty250a Carby

Ducman i have the OKO carby, I paid only A$164. Just need another throttle cable and I'm away in the sections again!
  2. I scored a 'new' source coil yesterday from the local Yamaha dealer, 1st he told me it was $250. Mmmm hang on he said, lets see if we can do better than that, and he did. $150 is all i paid. maybe a bit more than I wanted to pay, but it's new and still in its original package. I know I could have gone to the electronic ignition, but I need this stuff NOW as I have 3 trials in 3 weeks to ride.
  3. Thanks Stork, a new condensor is on the way, points too. I'll check the local sparky to re-do the windings and new wiring in the loom to discount any problems there.
  4. aaaah no not that Tony! may as well fork out $400 for the electronic ignition conversion if thats the case. How much will it be to rewind the stators and wiring? Thanks for the info, more and more is coming forward and much appreciated.

    Ty250a Carby

Feetup, yep that'll stuff it all. Instead of allowing a newer carby, and parts availability, try and find a TK carby or parts in a hurry in OZ. It aint possible, thats why I went for the OKO. I'll try my luck with the State rounds and put my case forward if asked. I trial fitted the OKO round slide carby today. The air filter side needs the rubber boot needs to be slightly expanded to fit, a new throttle cable is required to suit the OKO. It looks to be a good carby so far. I'll let you all know how it goes.

    Ty250a Carby

Ive ordered a round slide OKO, I dont think a flat slide is legal for competition here in OZ. Keeping in mind the flat slides werent thought of in 1974 for the TY.
  7. i did that, cleaned the contact area as well. 1 thing has me thinking though, why would it stop after the bike got hot. After about 5 - 10 minutes it coughed and spluttered then died.
  8. Thanks Majesty i'll get the points and condensor this week! I have 3 trials in the next 3 weeks to get too! Mmm electronic ignition is very tempting, but the pound to the A$ is a bit dodgy at the moment. But it may happen later...
  9. I have a dead TY250a. It didnt want to play yesterday and today before a major trial today. I spent 1 1/2 hours before dark and 2 hours before the trial trying to get it to work. Fuel, yes: spark, sometimes strong or weak or nothing: air, new clean airfilter. I have checked and cleaned the points, checked the timing, new plug. Compression is good. Checked carby, all ok there. Any ideas? I've been advised that it could be: coil, condenser or maybe even crank seals. The bike has been a very reliable bike up til now, Ive serviced it every six months, just cleaned the points not replaced and they are ok. Oil get done every 12 months. I dont want it to become a shelf item just yet..

    Ty250a Carby

Dont lose the mixture screw! the TY didnt go afterwards. Ive ordered an OKO carby, parts for the TK standard carby are a bit thin in OZ.
  11. while I'm riding and beating much more modern machinery on my '74 TY250, I'll still have it for ages yet! After all, owning it for 25 years, you get to know how to throw it around with little or no damage in the sections! And it's been a very economical little bike too!
  12. i have an arthritic condition that will stop me doing alot of things in the future, and I suffered from a sore back after a short time on the TY250. A good friend suggested 'rolling' the bars forward a touch and it worked wonders! Obviously exercising is good as well, but a small change on the bike will help too.
  13. My girl friend is 44 and rides my DT175e as well. She was nervous as hell at damaging either bike, but I assured that she couldnt do any more than I had over the years. The trials experience is very good for anyone, going slow never did any harm. Practice the basics and you'll be fine, then build up as your confidence grows!
  14. I'm teaching my girlfriend to ride a trials bike. She has had very minimal to no time on a bike before this year. Only got her learners licence last year. Within about 8 hours of instruction and determination, she has gone from just sitting down in 1st gear to 3rd gear standing on the pegs and now is doing tight figure eights..! I have joked that she will be in the sections before long. Next obstacles for her will be a couple of wooden pallets... oh and my bike...a '74 TY250a, so it's no light weight. But she is enjoying anytime on the bike.
  15. We used to have a rule stating, 3 wins in a grade you moved up. Now it's non-existent. I ride Clubman grade here in OZ, and although I was last at the last trial, I only dropped 53 points. 1st place dropped 1! But he is only 77 years of age and my TY250a is no match for the newer bikes. If I pick up any trophies this year, it's a bonus. I have my dust collection and now ride for fun. But beating riders of all ages on the TY in Clubman from 22 to 79years is a buzz, because the next oldest bike is a 2004 Gasser! If you are not after the tinware, ride and enjoy! You can only get better with each trial.
  16. are there any replies to this post anywhere else? My TY250 needs a new exhaust soon...
  17. about time the World came to Australia! it would be a huge trial in anyone's thinking. I hope this rumour will become one of the best things to come out of MA(Motorcycling Australia)!

    New Footpegs

Are there any new type(wider) footpegs to fit a '74 TY250? Or would DT250 footpegs fit?
  19. I've seen a bloke on a KLX250 clean a C grade line after a trial. Damn he was good! He was puffing afterwards, but he did it.
  20. Good old A$2.00 degreaser, let it settle then hose it off. Doesn't do any damage to plastics or alloy. CHamois off and run the bike to get out any water that may have settled, then sit back and admire! Use alloy polish and a dose of WD40 sprayed over the bike(not on the seat or grips!) to ward off the mud next time.

  22. I use my '74 TY250a trail riding. No problems at all. I ride with mates who have a CR500 and WR450f. Yes, I'm slower, but show me the hills and I leave them struggling.I have adjusted the carby and changed the final ratio for more speed and that's it. Good fun! I have asked if i could join in an Enduro, but as yet no answer.
  23. I have been told to go back to basics. Riding as often as possible and visualising the section helps when checking your lines in the section work well.
  24. Boy don't you get around. Top Job the restoremaz. WE need to get to a trial soon. There's one in Wollongong on July 1. Bring the new TY.
