  1. Have trackstand down yet? Assuming that you have, 1st gear do fine. ([edited: 2nd gear is best for training.]) The weight shifting is very important in trials. Have always your weight on your feet not on hands. For fornt wheel lifting you should try both, clutch and thortle lifting. For thortle ups use your weight to compress your forks and when susp. rebounds follow the rebound movement w/ your body and blib thorthle. Don
  2. The front pipe is very well protected because it has its place so up - next to top frame tubes, even litle "inside" the frame. Will not be a problem. For example the front pipe of beta is lot more vunerable because it runs right in the midle of the motor section (and on "wrong side" for most of us...).   3. I think that it has something to do with "suspended weight". A MXer is needed to smooth every stone on the way when riding 6th gear/full thortle, suspended weight: less = faster action.
