sooty
Hi All New to this site and to trials so Hi to all, anyhow my mate is doing up a Fantic but me being me I've gone and bought a 242 to restore and making a few calls have found out that this bike may be hard to find parts. I'm just dismatiling it at present so not sure what I'm after, if you know what I mean. many thanks for any input. Andy.
mattylad
Sandifords are always good for montesa parts. Fair number being used in Belgium at the moment and they seem to go well.
woody
Yes, 242 Mont is a good bike. You could try TY Offroad as he had a 242 that was either for sale as a parts bike or was being broken for parts, not sure which or if it is still there. Link below. sooty
I now have the engine together and wating to get some piston rings. belldane
Geez Sooty If I had the motor in front of me now I could tell you exactly what to do about the kick starter. If it helps, go to southwestmontesa.com.au and have a look at the repair manual. It covers Montys from the late 60's to mid 70's, you can download it for free. It covers the motor, gearbox, electrics and everything else. If you still have trouble let me know and I will try to help.
vintagecota
The manual covers only up to '75, so that kickstart assembly is not covered. The main thing is that there's a ramp on the gear to disengage it as the kicker swings forward. In other words, when the kickstart lever is parked, it's leaning forward against the case and when you swing it out and back to engage the kicker, you don't want it to engage until the lever is back over center. The ramp disengages the teeth in that swing from park to over center. You just need to get the gear with the ramp in the right clocking so that it ramps down and lets the teeth engage just as the lever comes over center. It's not too hard...... sooty
Thought as much. Still trying to get some piston rings, more chance in getting rocking horse poo! Bore 71mm. I have one ring that I will need to cut off 3mm to fit but will that be too much and change the shape of the ring?? And will it run OK with one ring? Cheers
vintagecota
Put it in the cylinder squarely using a piston, then hold the barrel up to a light and see if you can see light around the outside of the ring....
