I have a leaky shock on my 2002 2.9. Does anyone in the US rebuild these? Thanks!

I don't believe that shock is repairable.

I think I do recall Adrian at Lewisport telling me he had someone who could do them. Personally, I would not spend much on it, and if nothing else would be willing to try the Works Performance shock that they list for about $400, although cannot tell how well they work.

Adrian can tell the current price on a TRP shock or Ohlins, yet not cheap. You might see if you can find a good used one in the classifieds here! Sign on, and put in an inquiry!

Most shocks are rebuild-able, problem is it will always leak and you will have to rebuild it once every 6mo to a year. Is the shock that great if not I would go for an upgrade in shock.

that's going on my '07.... its Christmas present after the olle shock broke its shaft after the internals went south (no rebound dampening)

Okay it's pricey

Upgrade to a newer model shock ('07 or newer) just also get the '07 or newer wishbone (that ties the swingarm, shock and links together) to make it all fit right.

But I still consider the stock shocks as disposable

hence the TRP for me..fully rebuildable as it should be.

For me I got it from Carter Cycles (my local Sherco dealer) in Burlington, Ontario direct from Belgium within 2 weeks

I did not find someone to do the rebuild so with info from someone on thumpertalk, I did it myself. Moto-Pro was able to supply the shaft seal, bushing and oil. The seal is the same as a WP seal. There is no space for a schrader valve so the nitrogen valve is for a Fox snowmobile shock. Ohlins nitrogen valves may be similar. The shock no longer leaks and is noticeably smoother than before. The fresh oil made a difference.

Good job on that then! What all did you have to do as far as de-pressure and re charging the thing?

The recommendation was to pop out the seal head and let the shock burp out oil and gas. This made me nervous so I looked at the picture of the shock that was done and drilled a hole in the location of the nitrogen valve. A small hole released the gas pressure with no excitement. After disassembly, I drilled, tapped and counter bored the hole for the Fox valve. After assembly, I took it to a local bike suspension shop for pressurizing. This Fox valve has what looks like a rubber septum...similar to what is on the bottle of injectable drugs. It is filled with a needle. The shop works on Ohlins shocks so I believe Ohlins uses a similar valve/ needle setup.

I understand that non rebuildable shocks like this are assembled in a pressurized nitrogen chamber. Have you ever seen a picture of this? I can not imagine the setup.

Hmmm, very interisting, must be fairly low pressure. I cannot really get my head around the workings from the pics.

You see, this is the type of thing you cannot find folks to do sometimes, takes too much time!

How they do it in production? No idea! It does kinda p*** me off they make them that way that is hard to fix, yet the earlier models did seem to hold up well. The ones on the '06 seemed crap, but my '07 seem to be holding-toutch wood!

Hope it holds, if nothing else, you can re-do it now. Maybe you will have others that need it, get rich and retire young!

I was told they use liquid/solid nitrogen, sort of like dry ice which expands as it comes back to room temp which means instead of a pressurised chamber it's more likely a very cold room
