Montesa 349

Featured Replies

I have recently bought my first classic twin shock trials. I believe its a montesa 349. Frame and engine numbers both start with 51M. Im wondering if anyone could help me identifying what year it is?

349's with the 51M code were manufactured between 1979 and 1983. Can't tell what you have with so little information. Go to www.montesaweb.com and match your 349 with the correct year.

Thanks for the help. I do have pictures of it, however its all in parts!

What color is the tank? Is the tank fiberglass or plastic? What color is the frame?

Here's what my late 1982 / early 1983 looks like (plastic tank):

That's a great pic of a lovely bike.

I have tried to make a replica myself.

Will probably put the original silencer back on as it's not quiet running right yet.

It wont do with that WES on it. I tried one, and it went straight on ebay, choked the motor and it wouldn't rev!

Interestingly I had that exact problem, took it out today with both silencers, much better with the standard one, hmmmm, may take it apart and see what's inside.

Hi there,

The late model 349 and MH349 definitely run better with the heavy standard rear box. I have a virtually unused WES back box somewhere in the loft.

The standard rear box has a baffled first chamber and an absorption second chamber. The first chamber can be heavily blocked with carbon and oily gunge. With care the standard rear box can be cleaned and repacked without having to reweld it.
