June 21, 201511 yr Hi was wondering if anyone could shed a little light on my problem i have a 1986 honda tlr 200 relfex, the bike runs and starts fine but when it gets hot it starts to rev up on its own and they dont die off, i have tried 2 new carbs and i still have the same problem. Am i missing something? Thanks
June 21, 201511 yr Sounds like possibly an air leak. When it's reving high, spray some Carburetor Cleaner around the intake manifold area and see if problem momentarily improves.
June 23, 201511 yr Author Thanks guys, im not that clued up on engines what will this tell me? Thanks
June 24, 201511 yr The induction tract is under vacuum when the motor is idling, so if there is a leak, air will be getting in, causing the motor to run faster and leaner than it should. If carby cleaner or WD40 gets sucked in through a leak, the motor will change RPM. This helps to locate the site of the leak.
June 24, 201511 yr Author Thanks will give it a try, also what should the carb set up be as the plug is always black and dry after each trial. Any tips? Thanks
June 25, 201511 yr You have to find if there is an air leak first. You never mentioned which carbs. If you are just using another stock carb, it could be as simple as missing the o ring on the top.
June 25, 201511 yr If the carb has been removed, check the 'o' ring has room to expand in it's groove. When refitting do not over tighten the nuts or you can distort the carb body.
June 28, 201511 yr I had this problem on my 250. After a LOT of messing about trying different things including new carb & ignition, the problem was a worn exhaust valve seat. New valve, & seat re-grind and the problem was 100% cured.
