Charliedimmock46
Hi all, I’ve just picked up a ty80 to restore for my daughter when she’s old enough. unfortunately the engine casing has cracked which has caused oil to get to the stator and the ignition source coil is now giving continuity to ground. im struggling to find a replacement specifically for the ty80. Does anyone know of any other which fits? It’s a single coil stator
kurtas
Get it rewound by a place that does small coils.
konrad
I'm not saying your coil is good, but oil won't cause it to short out. Lots of large transformers are cooled by being immersed in oil. Everything is in parallel with the source coil.

Tr1AL
@Charliedimmock46 DT50/DT80MX 1982 looks almost identical but has lighting coil included. take that off if you do not want it . Go to ebay to find one second hand , not cheap though. Regards Alan.. Edited Tuesday at 12:40 AM by Tr1AL
faussy
Were the points open when you measured this continuity to ground? Open the points, and then also try removing the condenser, it can short to ground if faulty. You can get a new condenser at most autopart stores or online for a few quid Edited Tuesday at 10:04 AM by faussy

Yes, points open/points closed, it wouldn't work if it didn't. I have to make a few assumptions.... Are you sure you know how a magneto works ? Where are you showing this continuity ? And are you using an ohmeter ?
